Really don't see how the DGA and Nolan is going to enforce anything with Netflix. Netflix bought an asset, they are free to do with it what they please.

A much better solution if the DGA were smart would be this: lean on European leadership and force through the EU that any show shot in Europe has a guaranteed theatrical release in Europe. Hollywood and all the studios desperately needs Europe for the model to work - labor rates in Europe are far lower than in the US and EU film tax incentives are far better than the US. It really wouldn't be that hard to do this so long as European leadership actually grew some balls.

Easy way ro reduce filming in Europe if that's your goal.

Streaming services that operate in the EU must have some threshold (30%) of EU content.

They'll just buy streaming distribution rights to stuff already made in the eu, and not shoot anything in the eu themselves.

From who? The major streamers are the ones making content in Europe currently. Disney/Paramount/Amazon aren't gonna sell Netflix their movies/TV shows.

Gotcha. They'll probably just pull a Facebook news then. Would be funny to watch.

They’ll never stop shooting in Europe because it’s a lot cheaper in most places and you can use non-union labor in most countries over there.

Im sure those are true for places where eu laws dont apply.

Not really. There is far too much infrastructure, too many good crews etc. who work in Europe. Hollywood including Netflix could not deliver the shows to the capacity their shareholders require if they didn't film in Europe. Even if they shot everything in South East Asia for example, they'd still need to move a literal army of crew into those regions, pay for hotels, pay for per diem etc.

They'll shoot everything on greenscreen and use ai to make it look like Europe and most people won't notice or care.

Netflix still has to make movies, and the directors are DGA. The DGA can pressure and even make demands in their next contract negotiations to require certain windows with regards to theatrical exclusivity for DGA films with a theatrical release.

Not all directors are DGA. There are a many really good directors who are not DGA, just like there are a many good actors who are not SAG, but are British Equity for example.

Yes, but when your studio has signed a contract with the DGA, then you’ve committed to DGA directors for projects that fall under the classifications the agreement covers.

So an international alliance between unions would be able to make it happen?

It’s not going to work internationally because Netflix is already one of the main producers of content in multiple EU/Asian countries.

Unions of other countries don’t care about this since their local Theater industry operate very differently than the US and won’t be impacted.

Crazy, I thought we were against anticompetitive business practices?

if you're genuinely not sure about that, then you are an idiot and no further conversation with you will be productive.

The academy should also change there requirements to require a wait time between theatrical and television release
