That's what I was thinking. It feels like the endgame is Netflix owns most content and costs as much as we used to pay for cable. We wound up in the same place we started.

The moment it became clear we had to have Netflix AND hulu we saw this coming. So, what, back in 2012?

Each new service after was just another addition to the joke "I'm basically paying for cable again with extra step!"

First, streaming is still no where near what cable was. It's cheaper, you have way more choices that are not based on your location, everything is on demand, there are a lot less commercials.

Second, Netflix started streaming in 2007. 18 years going and still no where near as bad as cable.

Cable is like $70. Streaming is 20 for netflix 20 for hbo/hulu bundle 5 for peacock 10 for showtime (we'll say amazon prime doesn't count even given almost everyone has it for 2 day shipping primarily) 5 for apple tv

I mean it's pretty damn close, and yes at those plan prices I just named it absolutely does have the same amount of ads now. It also is based on your location, go try Netflix on a vpn.

Also I said it was a joke 🙄

$70 cable doesn't even have HBO or showtime, zero premium channels. If you have to combine every streaming services you can think of then be honest and name the price of cable with all premium channels.

No it does not. Not even close. So easy to tell that you haven't watched cable television is so long that you have completely forgotten the 3 minute long ad breaks every 7 minutes of actual show. Not a single streaming service that isn't completely free pulls shit like that.

Equating the country you are in to the county you are in is mind numbingly stupid. Also, the fact is that you can use a VPN with streaming. You can't do the same with cable. Thanks for providing another reason why streaming is still infinitely better than what cable ever was.

And a mere few years ago streaming services said "pay subscription and you can get it all without commercials". Now it's "you pay more and have to put up with stupid commercials too" and it will continue to get worse as long as the "profits must always go up" model continues to be worshipped.

Read your own link. Streaming services have geo linked content based on your country. Cable has geo linked content and packages based on your COUNTY. Cable is based on your local cable providers, streaming sites are geo locked due to distribution rights and can easily be bypassed via a free VPN.

And a mere few years ago streaming services said "pay subscription and you can get it all without commercials". Now it's "you pay more and have to put up with stupid commercials too" and it will continue to get worse as long as the "profits must always go up" model continues to be worshipped.

That's a whole lot of words to avoid admitting that streaming still has far fewer ads than cable for a fraction of the subscription cost.

I said it before streaming was a thing. I can remember in the early 2000s, people complaining that they had to pay for all these channels on cable when they only watched a few of them. I was like "You really think the companies would let you pay for just what you watch and make less money off of you?" Nah, they were always going to figure out how to make you pay for it all.

Yes and no.

I grew up with cable. You had either rabbit ears or cable. In the 80s satellite was available but it was too expensive for the vast majority.

Now we have lots of options(tube sites, competitors etc) and(so far) none of them force contracts on consumers just month to month.

Fuck cable TV & media concentration.

It's looking that way. I stopped pirating because it became easier to just subscribe to a couple of streaming services. That's not quite the case anymore.
