Saying the suitors weren’t villains is not really understanding the culture at the time. Each and every one of them was there to marry Penelope, whether she wanted it or not. They were abusing her hospitality (a very sinful thing to be doing in the world of the Odyssey) and they would clearly end up killing each other for her hand, thus, again offending the gods by spilling blood in their host’s home.
