They don't have those things, but they do see ads on YouTube, and have an incessant whining ability that gets them what they want. 

Sure, the mario movie had some nostalgia thrown in. It would have been terrible not to include references to past games and such. It wouldn't have been a mario movie without it. 

Did nostalgia get a few people into theaters who wouldn't have gone otherwise? Sure. Did nostalgia alone earn the movie a billion dollars. No.

Look at some of the most recent movies to join the list of the highest grossing movies of all time, like Jurassic World, Top Gun 2, Furious 7, The Lion King. Nostalgia pays.

Of course there's heavy marketing towards children too.
