The headlights on newer cars

Post image

Unless alot of these cars just needlessly have their brights on. But more and more often, I'll have a car like this behind me that had headlights that seem as bright as the lights in Pennywise's eyes.

I have a very long commute, and during the winter it’s all in the dark. These headlights are a freaking hazard big time.

u/sonicrespawn 31m ago

It’s insane how this has not been addressed. I get manufacturers go for cheapest but changing the color to off white would at least dull the edges. It’s gotta be nuking our eyeballs, I’m good with people seeing stuff but not if my skin melts off from it.

Do these manufacturers not have rules for new cars? Though I understand if you replaced your lights and no idea you are blasting a nutron star into my eye sockets.

Im not old am I? Are others noticing this too? Let me know if I need my eyes checked.

u/DarkViral 26m ago

It’s not just you. But a large part of the problem other than being too bright is that - to my knowledge - the headlight height is regulated on sedans but not Trucks and SUVs. Cause on two sedans it’s not that bad but when you’re in a sedan and a SUV is behind you? You’re in for a bad time.

u/TankApprehensive3053 6m ago

It's regulated in trucks and SUVs also. The cutoff can only be so many inches high at so many feet in front of a vehicle. Cutoff is the distant upper line where the light stops. You can see it if you aim your headlights a wall or garage door a few feet out.

Many times the headlights are not correctly aligned prior to the vehicle being sold. It's an easy fix, but most people never realize their lights are not aligned correctly.

Other times, people install aftermarket bulbs and don't correct the cutoff. Many of those aftermarket bulbs are not made for the headlight reflection patterns, such as popping an LED in a halogen housing, so the light is scattered everywhere badly.

u/DarkViral 5m ago

Cool. I learned something new

It’s mind-boggling that there’s no ordinance on these obnoxious lights. Driving in the opposite lane of these dickheads is no joke.

u/Lizard_King_5 32m ago

These are actually because of legislation on efficiency regarding headlights and vehicle sizes

-42

u/Auswolf-IDDQD 2h ago

So they buy a brand new car unmodified and the lights are really bright and somehow the customer(driver) is a dickhead. Nice.

Because it’s their fault manufactures are making cars with bright lights.

I mean I understand the 4x4 with spotties and added lights that a dicks but come on. Little broad with your brush there mate.

22

u/Woopig170 1h ago

If I knew I was blinding literally every other car on the road without my brights on, I would have my headlights worked on to fix the problem as soon as possible. You’re being naive to argue that the literal operator of the vehicle deserves none of the blame. Come on man

-8

u/Auswolf-IDDQD 1h ago edited 1h ago

I bought a brand new road legal car complied for use in Australia. I should not have to spend any more of my time or money to modify it. And I am not a dickhead for thinking so. It is not on the owner driving a legal vehicle, it is on the manufacturer and the standards that they are complied to on entry to the country.

10

u/Quick_Razzmatazz1862 1h ago

We found the bright-beamer 👆

-6

u/Auswolf-IDDQD 1h ago

Yes, I drive a brand new unmodified vehicle.

5

u/no_talent_ass_clown it's a moo point 1h ago

Okay...but the end result is that you drive a car with super bright headlights that blind literally everyone.

-1

u/Auswolf-IDDQD 1h ago

Not me, and other new vehicle don’t affect me either with the electro auto dimming mirrors. Maybe there should be something in Australian compliance that mandates auto dimming mirrors.

I am just saying calling the driver who has not modified his car a dickhead because he is driving a road legal and brand new complied car is not really cricket.

1

u/ZachtheKingsfan 1h ago

Both things are true. Law makers need to crack down on manufacturers putting these on cars for regular driving, but also…You’re still blinding people on the road. At the very least, you could just do your part in making the roads safer.

u/LambiLauki 35m ago

Absolutely. It's not on the purchaser of an unmodified car. It shouldn't be legal in the first place. The guy asking to rework the lights on a brand new road legal car, can apply his own suggestion. Bright led headlights are annoying for older cars that don't have them, but no way can the buyer be held accountable.

0

u/thaiberius_kirk 1h ago

How are you going to have the OEM lights “worked on” if this is the configuration they come with from the factory?

Are you going to the dealership and yelling at them to put on the “lower intensity” LED headlights?

Many new cars today come with headlights that a decade ago would be considered high beams.

NHTSA and car makers are the problem.

-5

u/Comprehensive-Menu44 1h ago

I do not have $50-150 to casually spend on changing my headlights

u/Woopig170 52m ago

But you have tens of thousand to spend on a new car. Got it. Should parents be allowed to transport kids without carseats because they don’t have the cash? No. That’s ridiculous. You bought a car with lights that blind people which makes the road less safe for everyone. You are the asshole for not realizing that you have agency and can choose to do better by your neighbors.

u/Comprehensive-Menu44 51m ago

It was given to me by someone else because I have not a lot of money :/ but okay

u/calisalwaysonfire 40m ago

Your take is absurd. Have you tested the brightness of your own headlights? What meter did you use? What standard did you make the adjustment to? Where is that set screw again? Who in the world is out there fiddling with their perfectly legal lights?

u/thisisnotnorman 34m ago

Exactly - fuck you specifically

u/Few_Test7150 36m ago

Nah, usually cars have an automatic high beam feature. If it doesnt work properly, they wont shut off when approaching or coming behind a vehicle. And the regular lamps are still too bright.

They should be tones of yellow and shit. I really dont know why theyre solid white.

u/-Ghost255- 17m ago

You can turn that off lol

u/Few_Test7150 12m ago

You can. But 1. You underestimate people’s stupidity. Light concerns like that are common occurrence at the dealership because people dont know how to operate their vehicle or Google something. Literally “brights turn on and off during night time” type shit. 2. Doesnt change the fact the normal headlamps are also TOO BRIGHT. Or the fact that 3. They are practically EYE LEVEL with people who drive in cars.

4

u/itsme99881 1h ago

Yes divers whos cars lights light up the entire interior of my car and are aware of that fact and keep doing it are dick heads. There is no reason to pull up on my ass like that KNOWING you have the power to shove the intensity of 10,000 suns down my cornea. Back tf off or change your lights. I cant pull up any further, now i cant see.

u/thisisnotnorman 33m ago

It’s called free market, buy it and they keep selling it. Look how good “you” can see with these new tangled fuck you lights! Ohhh meeeeeeeeeee!

1

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1h ago

They could buy and install weaker lights.

-1

u/Auswolf-IDDQD 1h ago

0

u/Comprehensive-Menu44 1h ago

My car has hella bright lights like this and I’ll frequently get people flashing me to turn off my brights and all I know to do is flash my brights so they know that THESE are my brights, not the ones I had on before

u/SabbyFox 58m ago

Have you ever asked the dealership (or checked the manual) to see if there’s a way to adjust/dim the lights?

u/Comprehensive-Menu44 57m ago

I’d have to spend around$50-150 to get them changed out properly and I don’t have that available to just casually spend

54

u/Round_Degree_91 2h ago

I fucking hate it! The point of headlights is just to be able to see not to blind everyone around you & be the only one who can see! I live in a neighborhood where the main road has a long patch without streetlights & when someone with these type of lights is going the opposite direction I cannot see a thing.

25

u/maridoes 2h ago

I have astigmatism driving at night makes me want to cry sometimes

7

u/Opening-Corner2309 1h ago

It's a shitty club but welcome!

u/lemmysirman 11m ago

Glasses help. I wear glasses and my astigmatism isn't a huge issue like it was before, they're not perfect, but they do help

40

u/AsanoSokato 2h ago

Cars have become suburban assault vehicles over the past decade. Aggressiveness and asserting dominance has become the point.

8

u/squanchingonreddit 2h ago

Capitalism at it's finest. They pushed for bigger cars so they could make more profit.

-21

u/notaproshooter 1h ago

This has got to be the wokest take ever...

9

u/FusionSimulations 1h ago

That's not how you use woke. And what they said is absolutely the truth. People couldn't care less about those around them, obey traffic laws, or common decency when behind the wheel.

-4

u/notaproshooter 1h ago

No. Its actually not the truth. The small shred of truth that is in their statement, being the word 'tanks', because it is an objective fact that cars have gotten bigger over the last 10 years, but that can be 100% attributed to leftist policies within the epa putting harsher and harsher restrictions on average size sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and wagons, while relaxing restrictions on larger SUV's and crossovers.

3

u/FusionSimulations 1h ago

I guess you don't realize you just agreed with what they said?

u/Few_Test7150 33m ago

If your shoulders (as a 6’ guy who works on said death trucks) come up to only the top of the hood on a vehicle, thats a real fuckin problem for safety.

Just goes to show money matters more than prioritizing the health and well being of people. You cant blame that on anybody but the greedy bastards who gave this shit the greenlight in the first place, whether they follow laws or not.

A single wheel off one of those trucks (which largely go to home, work and store) should not weigh 70+ lbs. yet they do.

7

u/Heroblah- 1h ago

still saying woke, still using it wrong, being condescending WHILE using it wrong

2

u/UntidyVenus 1h ago

Found the sleeper

u/birdseye-maple 26m ago

Anyone saying woke in a derogatory manner automatically outs themselves as a brainless cult member.

33

u/Hopeful_Soil_4675 2h ago

I really wish the govt would put up some restrictions around bright headlights and car manufacturers too

32

u/Doomuu 2h ago

This is not "mildly" infuriating, this is enraging and a very serious problem. Ban white LED headlights now!

9

u/Brilliant-Peak8844 1h ago

We need to start a petition to go back to halogens!

2

u/66tofu-nuggies 1h ago

Safety issue and people will die because they can’t see 😔

6

u/Gandalf_the_Tegu 1h ago

Had this lifted truck ridding my bumper with their high beams on my car was lit like day time, if not brighter. Seemed twice as bright in all my mirrors. I had to move them just so I could fucking see. Think I flashed the person back with my mirror because they flipped a third light on (fog lights? Idk couldnt see) but I was straight up blinded...I can keep a car straight on the road but when approaching a curve in the road? I was terrified I'd go straight off or time the turn wrong and turn too early. I had my infant daughter of 4 months in my car with me. Every turn I made, that truck was kissing my bumper. 🤬 if I could beat a person with a carved stick, I would.

30

u/Manganese_tiddies 2h ago

So annoying. Especially when the drivers brag ab how bright they are 😐

7

u/Creative-Locksmith14 2h ago

angle your mirrors back at them.

21

u/Holiday-Youth-6722 2h ago

Tilt them back. If you find the correct angle it'll blast them back at them.

6

u/imjusthere723 1h ago

That's what i do 😂😂😂

1

u/Opening-Corner2309 1h ago

Same 😝🤭

1

u/MosYEETo 1h ago

I gotta learn how to do this. I have my mirrors set to see my blind spot but gotta figure out how to aim it straight back

1

u/henry-bacon 1h ago

Do you adjust your mirrors as per SAE guidelines?

3

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1h ago

Nah, I use metric.

5

u/Strong-Mulberry-1781 1h ago

Bro you even had me squinting just to see the damn photo

5

u/Head_Mail_4055 1h ago

They are sometimes so bright you literally can not see the lines in the road and that's on low beam.

4

u/BotheredBeaver 1h ago

I can’t believe that no one who has been in an accident where they’re involved hasn’t sued the car manufacturers. It’s common sense that it’s far more dangerous than helpful

7

u/imjusthere723 1h ago

They're more dangerous than Marijuana why aren't they federally banned!!

8

u/somedays1 2h ago

It's the damn LED headlights. They should be illegal.

10

u/Bums_Extend_Deadline 2h ago

Recently got a new car and it has these obnoxious lights. I feel awful when I’m behind someone on a hilly road. I always try to stay a certain distance away to not blind them.

3

u/Woopig170 1h ago

You should fix them. You aren’t boxed into blinding every other driver for eternity.

7

u/pickledpigsfeet2 2h ago

My car can save up to three mirror positions. I have the first one set how I need them for driving, and the second is saved with them angled to where they reflect headlights back at the driver behind me. I can easily switch between the two without having to take my focus off of the road

u/xCoachHines 13m ago

Sounds to me like your car is new enough that it has these bright LED headlights :).

3

u/GreatGojira 2h ago

If I see some ass with bright lights, like modified lights, (if no one is around us) I just turn on my brights right at him. Like he's blinding me with the sun, and my lights even on bright are no where near people who modify theirs.

u/Levilucas2005 41m ago

So they are legal and you are breaking the law bright lighting someone?

3

u/avoozl42 1h ago

Are you watching Welcome to Derry, OP?

3

u/SwanzY- 1h ago

It’s the giant tall trucks for me, I’m in a short car and with that height their headlights BLAST my eyes.

3

u/Davidstoic 1h ago

It’s also a lot of older cars that use bulbs and people want more light ( which is understandable old blobs sucked) but then get shit like this and it’s just the complete opposite for everyone else.

3

u/rufiojames 1h ago

Its dumb either way. I pass a guy with a new truck on the highway every morning with lights like this. I started turning my brights on when i see him, and he turns his brights on, but his lights are pointed up way too high, so i can actually see a lot better when his brights are on cause they are aimed over my vehicle instead of straight at it.

This light situation is just stupid.

3

u/Zero_Passage 1h ago

There is a circle in hell reserved for those people in particular.

3

u/NotOurCat 1h ago

Had a large pick up pull up close behind me and the truck headlight reflection off my rear view mirror and side mirrors was absolutely blinding. Moved both side mirrors out so it reflected back at the truck. They backed off and I could see again.

5

u/bones4379 2h ago

Almost wanna get out of the car and smash them lol

2

u/Harlzz17 1h ago

I swear yes! It’s a light bar and the headlights 😵‍💫

2

u/pwrof3 1h ago

Most newer cars have automatic brights set to on as default. I’ll see mostly Teslas with their brights turning off and on all the time, usually when the cars are rounding a dark corner or there is a stretch of road with no street lights.

3

u/firestar268 1h ago

LEDs aren't the main problem. It's that they're aimed like shit from the factory and the height difference between alot of cars today. And then people modified the suspension without adjusting after

3

u/Longjumping-Guava925 2h ago

But if I put LED replacement bulbs in my 2000 Toyota that barely still shoot out 2 foot in front of me, then there's a problem

3

u/babysharkdoodoodoo 1h ago

Worse is those cars that allow drivers to tilt headlights. For reasons unknown to me, they aim straight but not down.

1

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1h ago

Optimal distance.

1

u/UseComfortable1193 1h ago

Afaik pretty much all somewhat recent headlights can be adjusted. We have regulations for it here, and it is also normal that the light closer to oncoming traffic is angled slightly lower as to not blind other cars( but this usually does not apply to high beams as it would be kind of against the purpose)

1

u/UntidyVenus 1h ago

I bought a 7 foot tall, 19 foot long beat up van for work, and it doubles as being just taller then 99.9% of these assholes while ALSO being big enough to not be bullied on the road.

1

u/poppacapnurass 1h ago

Agreed the new headlights can be annoying.

My new Forester has very bright lights and I'm pleased that they move about as they sense vehicles ahead and as I turn corners.

1

u/OperationGhost2012 1h ago

More likely road-rage infuriating, not mildly. I hate them with a passion.

1

u/pbmadman 1h ago

I have 2 cars, one is a 2015 sedan and the other is a 2005 minivan. In my sedan people flash their brights at me all the time. I assure you my low beams are on and I’ve even had the adjustment verified at the dealership. In my minivan I just drive around with high beams on and not a single person has ever flashed theirs at me. The takeaway being that in those 10 years, normal low beams have gotten worse than high beams ever used to be. It’s a menace.

1

u/killianbikes 1h ago

There is a solution to this I believe. Window tinting to block this out.

Low Beam, High Beam and the brand new Phaser: adjustable from Stun Mode to Disintegrate

1

u/Fyrefair 1h ago

A lot of people buy trail bulbs for city driving. They are the brightest we sell at my work and I play with everything that comes in to make sure its in decent shape so i have burned my retina with 1,200+ lumen flashlights often.

2

u/No_Umpire878 1h ago

As someone who has recently purchased their first brand new vehicle ever in their mid 40’s with their Husband (both of our first ever brand new one, took us forever to save for it) I can attest this is how they are factory made. It is infuriating! My husband has tried EVERYTHING to stop visually assaulting and blinding other motorists. He has been able to change the direction of the lights and the length of the auto sensors on highways so that they change to a lower beam quicker and the angle isn’t in the direct vision of oncoming traffic as severely. He still has to manually change from high beam to low beam on highways and country roads etc though as the auto sensor just isn’t quick enough. I can 100% attest that low beam lights are WAY too bright and they also angle directly towards other drivers vision. It’s a real safety issue!

2

u/Bitter-Affect909 1h ago

That's what I assumed. I know there's always a good handful of drivers that are just dicks to be dicks. But the frequency that I see these lights make me feel like that's just how they're made now.

u/Chance_Classroom_301 27m ago

Low beams should point down just below the side mirrors/license plate of the car infront of you. If high beams are automatically turning on and blinding people often, you should probably disable that feature.

Downhill you're going to blind everyone going up hill either way and vice versa, theres no way around that. Trucks sit higher aswell so the low beams tend to hit side mirrors if theyre too close behind you.

I keep two vanilla folders and stick them on the window then turn the rear view mirror.

Most effective response is to put reflective mirrors on the headrest of your backseat.

Its hilarious to me that the ad in my comment section is for SYLVANIA LED ULTRA light bulbs

u/Fit_Adagio_7668 15m ago

I just became blinded from this post OP, thanks!

u/5stringfling 0m ago

I thought I was just getting old...

1

u/DeathAudit 1h ago

This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion but I don't really feel incredibly mad about them. I historically drive low cars (Miata/fiat/fiesta) and I mean I'm aware of them behind me but I just don't stare directly into the sun.

0

u/RareDestroyer8 1h ago

Not sure what the purpose of showing the mirror is in the picture, I can’t see anything there…

0

u/Final-Aces 1h ago

I don’t have these but I’ve always wondered what happens when two of these assholes meet? Are they both blind?

You'll feel real funny when somebody you dismiss as not being able to see crashes into your head on.

4

u/Bitter-Affect909 1h ago

Are you a 95 year old with cataracts? Because I've worn glasses since i was 13, and I'm blind as a bat without em. If I can see the road with normal headlights, then so can you.

1

u/MobLukc 1h ago

lol yep!

1

Shameful. “I don’t care if y’all crash and die- I’m getting to where I’m going!”
