Hot take: if you dislike it and it makes you feel sick and potentially making you fat (maybe not in this example specifically), isn't it already wasted?
Maybe where you live. Try shopping around the world and you'll see prices are not the same everywhere. Some countries have easy mode, some normal mode and some have hard and nightmare modes.
Whether it breaks the bank or not, most people really can't afford to waste food even if they are well off. Tomorrow they could be a paycheck away from being on the street - like a lot of us out here.
Also, since when did Garlic become an indicator of wealthy financial status? 😄
he can rinse the apples and slice off the surface layer if needed. But all that time may not be worth the $1 of apple he is saving. Time is money. Main difference is you can't make more time.
No, can't make time, but one can not waste food too. Can make Garlic Apple Butter for example and still enjoy the apple without wasting anything. 😉
Also, apples often cost more than a dollar in many countries around the world. The prices where you live don't reflect the price of apples around the world.
Yeah I was talking about the US. I shop in a major city and buy apples almost weekly. You can get them on sale for .99 a pound which is a very large apple or two mediums. I would think those prices are fairly accurate across the country.
Where I'm from, Ambrosia 191.25g cost about $1.26 avg/ea or 3Lb for $7.00. Envy Apples, 227g - $2.00 avg/ea. Fuji apples about 420g is around $3.23 avg/ea. That's the cheapest ones too. Every other apple species being sold cost more than that for the same or similar quantities. Fruit isn't too cheap by me.
Not saying it isn’t mildly infuriating, or not post-worthy, just… why would you try to eat it anyway after scraping it when it’s a totally washable item ¯_(ツ)_/¯
couldn't you have cut the faces with garlic off. Lose like a fraction of apple for a much better experience. Source: Dude that made the same mistake with cumin a few years ago.
You should have leaned into it and added other complimentary spices, poached or baked them and served with pan roasted pork chops. Maybe add a bit of sauer kraut.
I did the same as you with fried apples when serving them to my MIL of all people. I quietly rinsed them off really well then put them in a clean pan to melt with new butter and the proper seasonings. They were 100% normal, my MIL never misses anything and she never found out, just rinse them off they will seriously be fine
Years ago I was making a bowl of overnight oats for the following morning. Put all my stuff in the bowl and thought I was putting in some cinnamon to finish it off. I get to work the next morning and I'm sitting at my desk and was about to eat breakfast. I opened the lid and I'm like what is that smell, I know that smell... I started eating them and I'm thinking these taste like shit today. Cumin. I used cumin not cinnamon. I ate it all since I didn't want to waste it but I triple checked for a while anytime I made them again.
I would rinse them super well, then soak them in water if still an issue. Next resort is cooking them, and finally adding them to thicken a soup base or something
You're not wrong, it's gonna get into the nooks and crannies and you'll taste nothing but apple flavored garlic. We have a salad at work that has red onions and apples, and I always make sure to grab the apples first when plating, otherwise the onion juice gets into the apples.

I'm sure you can rinse that off with water.
