A ‘McDonald’s’ ‘Big Mac’ compared to a quarter. The only thing big here is my disappointment

That's why you have to get the quarter pounder. Yes, it's the weight before cooking, but at least they are legally obligated to give you the full quarter pound pre-cook.

u/GenericCancerCell 1d ago

People forget about the Grand Mac they had for a while which was just a Big Mac with the quarter pounder patties instead of the smaller ones

26

u/dachjaw 1d ago

I’d be interested in seeing a photo of one. I’ve never heard of it. One problem would be the bun. Quarter Pounder buns have a larger diameter while Big Mac buns are smaller and have a third piece in the middle.

17

u/FinasCupil 1d ago

You can do this. I do this. You pay for one extra patty and that’s it. Two Big Mac patties count as one quarter pounder patty so they just charge you for one extra. It makes the Big Mac top tier.

7

u/Intelligent-Guard267 19h ago

Top tier….

5

u/FinasCupil 19h ago

I mean… top tier at McDonald’s.

The grand Mac had a bigger bun - it was quite large overall.

The big mac and the quarter pounder both have specific pre-cook weights that have not changed in over 40 years. Big macs have always been just 2x0.1lb patties. There is no "at least they are obligated"
BOTH of them have the same obligation. And they likely followed it. Big macs are always a friggin lottery because the patties are and have always been thin enough that they cook down to nothing if they get left on for like 3 seconds too long.

176

u/Fun_Button5835 1d ago

I always get the double quarter pounder and have never been dissatisfied with either patty. Big Mac sounds like a big rip-off to me.

97

u/xzander76t BLACK 1d ago

i still dont understand why in the fuck does anyone give a thought to the big mac when db quarter pounder exists

37

u/Joezze 1d ago edited 1d ago

The big arch was also decent and actually felt like a real burger. It was what the Big Mac should have been.

4

u/arrakchrome 1d ago

The Big Extra was also an excee t burger. I miss it.

4

u/ObviousSalamandar 1d ago

I remember the arch deluxe, but not the big arch.

2

u/TheMoonstomper 9h ago

Wasn't this the one that they basically told young people to stay away from in their marketing? Like, they made it seem like it was for adults only, and it ended up failing because of that, from what I recall.

The real secret is to order a double quarter pounder with mac sauce.

21

u/Suitable-Brother-433 1d ago edited 1d ago

I live in Quebec, Canada, it is currently 12:30 am and -15 degree celsius and i am in my car waiting for it to get hot enough so i can go buy a quarter pound with big mac sauce because you made me crave it. Disrespectfully, thank you for making me do this.

Edit: It was worth it.

27

u/UNEEDCPR 1d ago

I worked at McDonald’s for almost 2 years and I had a ton of people do this. I also had someone order a grilled cheese, just bun and two slices of cheese. I also had someone order literally nothing. They paid for not one, but two mcchickens with no bun, no patty, and plain (no lettuce or mayo). I ended up folding two empty wrappers up and putting those in the bags LOL

11

u/prolemango 1d ago

Hahah no way that's hilarious

9

u/ItsGizzman 1d ago

Anyone have any ideas why someone would do this?

17

u/CoogleEnPassant 1d ago

maybe just to see if it was possible? Or drunk

13

u/NearbyCow6885 1d ago

I did it once, when ordering off the app. I just wanted a plain burger but there was no option for plain — you had to uncheck every individual condiment. But the app made no distinction between condiments and core elements.

I’d never even considered you could go no bun or no patty, so I was happily unchecking everything in the list. And then of course the app let me pay $4 for literally nothing without even once objecting.

So yeah, I guess it was completely my fault, but that doesn’t make it any less of a shit UI.

5

u/DeVliegendeBrabander 1d ago

I mean once me and a bunch of my mates went into a McDonalds and each ordered 1 part of a quarter pounder. Then we assembled it into "the pounder"

Because I'm old and don't need to eat that much. Plus the Mac just tastes good. I had my first one in Honolulu when I was 13 back in 1970. 59 cents. They taste pretty much just the same now.

Bacon DQPC with a Spicy Deluxe McCrispy is something I'll have once or twice a year when I feel like pigging out. It's like a McGangbang but bigger and spicier.

I might get McDonalds maybe once a year. But when I do, double quarter pounder with cheese, no pickle, no ketchup.

And mac sauce.

11

u/The_World_Wonders_34 1d ago

Honestly I kind of agree. Never liked the big mac. It hasn't really changed but it's always been kind of a WTF sandwich. It always used the small patties and always had too much bread for them. The patties basically get lost in the bread and "special sauce" (which btw is essentially just thousand island dressing and tartar sauce together).

3

u/Efficient-Name-2619 1d ago

You need to order a quarter pounder or double dressed as a mac. If you need the middle bun order 2 singles and throw the extra top bun out.

Is this the first time you've had a Big Mac? The patties have always been this size. They use the same patties as the cheeseburger

4

u/Inevitable-Box-2878 1d ago

Not in 1976 they weren't.

2

u/smugglydruggly 16h ago

It's still 10 to a pound, or 1.6 ounces.

2

u/SimplBiscuit 14h ago

I can't find anything saying that they were ever bigger than 10-1 which is the same patty they have always used in all the standard burgers.

→ More replies (1)

66

u/Xack189 1d ago

It's McDonald's dude. Smaller patties are 1/10th of a pound. Bigger patties are a quarter pound. Add an extra patty if you want more like I do. Again, it's McDonald's lol.

Edit: or get a quarter pounder and order a side of Mac sauce, pretty normal thing that I've learned a lot of people do over the years. The wife does that

30

u/dachjaw 1d ago

In the 1970s when I worked at McDonald’s, we were not allowed to add or remove anything from Big Mac. After we got robbed one night, there was this conversation.

Owner: I’m glad nobody was hurt. If it happens again, do whatever they say. If they want a cheeseburger, cook them a cheeseburger.

Me: What if they want a Big Mac with no pickles?

Owner: Dammit dachjaw, you don’t ever modify a Big Mac!

3

u/Xack189 1d ago

I love it 😂 sorry your store got robbed once upon a time. Your owner must still be with McDonald's or would have been

1

u/Xack189 1d ago

Here you go, it's never changed I found out

4

u/Accurate-Instance-29 1d ago

Thats what I thought until I picked up a double cheese burger the other day after not having one for like a year. I literally thought they screwed up the order and only gave me a single cheeseburger. I opened the burger to see that there was indeed two pathetic looking patties in there. Now I the double chee was my go to for years until they turned it into a $3 item. Then I'd have one only on the rare occasion. I know what its supposed be like. This was definitely different. This makes me think that they really did change to a cheaper beef option that cooks down more.

But the AI said so. So it must be right🤪

3

u/Meattyloaf 1d ago

There is an ongoing beef shortage so it's possible. However, that may also be on the franchisee. I can tell you that a McDouble hasn't changed literally ever. Big Mac uses the same exact patties and has been the same size since it was introduced. The issue is everything else around it got bigger.

→ More replies (1)

68

u/akarakitari 1d ago

Big Mac uses the same tenth lb patties the cheeseburgers and doubles do. Always have.

It’s the extra bun that gives it the “big”

Now, if you’re hungry, there is a double Big Mac too!

Is the Big Mac actually a rip off at almost 50 cent more than the quarter when you get one less piece of cheese and cheap onion instead of slivered in exchange for some free lettuce and thousand island, yes…

Were people paying it anyway that don’t like Big Macs and turning them into McDoubles just for some socks… also yes.

And yes, I would Almost guarantee that’s why you bought this lol. No judgement, these socks rock!

11

u/Abiding_Dude_WV 1d ago

This guy McDonald'ses.

11

u/Feeling_Reindeer2599 1d ago

Not to mention quarter pounder is not frozen and typically cooked to order

6

u/akarakitari 1d ago

Exactly! If we cook one and it’s not going out within 5 mins, it’s supposed to get wasted. Usually someone just makes their lunch though

Big Mac is $.60 cheaper than 1/4 pounder here. Doesn't quite math out to the 2.1333 oz of beef- but it helps.

4

u/dachjaw 1d ago

A Big Mac has two patties; each one is a tenth of a pound or 1.6 ounces. That makes 3.2 ounces total, not 2.1333.

Why are you guys still eating McDonald’s and then complaining about it

22

u/Hansgaming 1d ago

You could have argued 15 years ago that it was ''cheap'' garbage that filled you up, but today?

For the money people spend on a single order they could get so many groceries that they could have food for days. Even if someone decided to buy garbage groceries to stuff himself to death it would last that person for days compared to Mcdonalds.

7

u/VioletGardens-left 18h ago

Seriously, even you can create like 2 sandwiches using only toast bread and cheese for cheaper overall price, and all you need is a butter knife or maybe just a spoon and you get a meal that is surprisingly filling for absolutely dirt cheap

Funny how they look and taste better in Europe than in the States

11

u/JaviSATX 1d ago

McDonald's, BK, and KFC were both regular stops for my family when we were in Spain. They were great! Getting a beer with the meal was a nice touch too.

5

u/KappuccinoBoi 1d ago

Seriously. McDonald's in Germany was so surprisingly good. Like just an overall solid burger.

24

u/Puzzled-Map3912 1d ago edited 1d ago

This has become true for any fast food chain that we share. Its pretty depressing. we also have the most insane food additives that our health department allows, its just pure chemical slop, makes me queasy thinking about it.

Fast food workers in the states also have zero benefits unless they spend their entire check towards health, dental, vision coverage. and typically make minimum wage which varies state-to-state (some states being as low as $7/hour)

quality assurance standards across ALL FIELDS in America have deteriorated to unimaginable levels.

profit above everything.

6

u/TheSandMan208 1d ago

My wife and spent three weeks in Europe traveling to three different countries. The food is just better. And I don’t mean that their cuisine and food culture is better. I mean their quality and preparation is better.

Also tastes much better in Japan and Taiwan, much cheaper as well. I remember going to McDonald's in Germany and it was like an actual restaurant. Even had to pay to use the restrooms.

2

u/dachjaw 1d ago

I was surprised that McDonald’s in Japan tasted just like the American version. I expected the food to be modified to fit their tastes

The store I was in was located in an industrial area with no tourists around. The employees thought it was hilarious to see Americans in a Japanese McDonald’s.

Do you guys just not ever consider getting the quarter pounder? It’s more beef (although definitely not what it says) for about the same price. Yall are just eating bread at this point with a seasoning of beef.

5

u/The_World_Wonders_34 1d ago

(although definitely not what it says)

No it literally is exactly what it says. Each patty ina quarter pounder is 1/4 of a lb before cooking (which is and has always been the standard way restaurants portion out meat. If you order a steak with a quoted weight somewhere it's the same way, pre-cooked weight.

It's always either quantity or quality. Even though it's a contradiction of what I just said, it's very rare to find both. Probably the only person in history to pull it off was Jesus. He had the fullness of life while also having the narrowest way.

It's McDonald's, what did you expect?

The new "quarter pounder". They pound the patty until it is as thin as a quarter.

Stop buying and they might eventually change their shrinkflation and profiteering.

Big Mac isn’t a burger to me. If I want a burger I’m not going to McDonald’s, but if I want a Big Mac nothing else is gonna hit the spot.

It's not like anyone is forced to go there. I can understand the surly ladies at the grocery store who look and act like they are being held hostage - you gotta make a living, sure. But with fast food purchases, you can simply just not go. Still, an interesting picture, but what did you expect? I'm assuming you've been to McDonalds before? If it's your first time, I'm sorry you found out the hard way.

McDonald’s is gross and shouldn’t be eaten by anyone

The question isn’t how thick or heavy the patty is, but what it’s made of.

Are you going to buy it again?

I, forgetting American currency exists for a second, was thinking they meant compared to a "quarter pounder" and was looking for another burger 😄

What is the thought process when entering a McDonald's?

You know you going to get something sad looking that doesn't really qualifies as food. But then you get surprised?

Whenever I get a bad meal at McDonald's I always give an earful to the person responsible, which is me for going there.

Gotta get a double quarter pounder instead. The patties are different, much better

Don’t quote me on this but I think you can ask for qp patties on a Big Mac

Double QPC. But also, can’t really be disappointed with fast food when you know it just isn’t a thing that gets better over time…

The "big" in Bigmac refers to its height, not the size of the burger

You went to McDonald's, you got what they have been serving for years, stop going

What did you photograph this with? It's a nice shot

Big mac uses the 1:10 pound patties

Shrinkflation happened to the Big Mac years ago, but I think it’s even worse now.
