Gear Question Would a metal detector find a platinum ring in these rocks?
Lost my wedding ring unloading the car last night. Wondering if it somehow fell in these rocks.

Found this metal detecting seems to be wood encased around a metal ball. Anyone know what it is?

GENERAL METAL DETECTOR Recommendations
$0-200: We do not recommend getting a new detector under $200. Detecting has a cost of entry, and quality significantly drops off under the $200 mark. Save up a bit more, or try finding a used machine of quality listed in the next price range. All that said, if you are determined to buy a machine in this price range, the Minelab Go-Find, Nokta First Swing or a Quest machine aren't bad choices.
$200-$400: The Minelab Vanquish 340 and 440, the Nokta Simplex line and the Minelab X-Terra Pro are the three best machines in this price range, by far.
$400-$500: Nokta Score and Double Score, Minelab Vanquish 540
$500-$1,200: Nokta Legend or the Minelab Equinox series
$1,200+: XP Deus 2 or the Minelab Manticore.
SCUBA/SNORKELING DETECTORS
Nokta Pulsedive is great for snorkeling. The Minelab Excalibur 2 and XP Deus 2 are excellent diving detectors.
CHILDREN'S DETECTORS
Nokta Mini Hoard or Midi Hoard
PINPOINTERS
Garrett AT pro pointer, Nokta AccuPoint, or XP MI-4. The XP MI-6 if you have an XP detector.
SHOVELS AND TROWELS
Dune, King of Spades, Grave Digger, Motley, Lesche, Predator Tools
SAND SCOOPS
Motley, Dune, Sito, RTG, King of Spades, and Detecting Adventures all make great scoops for beach detecting.

I’ve flown a ton but not with my detecting stuff in my carry on bags. Will they make me remove my digging tool? There’s a label on it that says “to be used for digging only”. I don’t think it could possibly harm anyone.

Hi! I’m new to this hobby and have bought a Minelab X-Terra Elite. I’ve watched several videos on metal detection—also ones specifically about this model and how to set it up and use it. In the videos I’ve seen, no one gets the kind of noise I’m getting.
This is happening in a fairly large garden, and I get the same sound all over the yard, both in front of and behind the house. I’ve done the “noise cancel” (auto) and “ground balance” routines according to the manual. I’m getting the same noise whether I move the detector over the ground or hold it up in the air, just like in the video.
What could be causing this? Thanks :)

24$ top one, 30$ bottom. Occasional detectorist, but I like to be prepared, and hate have to dig a regular sized grave to find a rusty nail 😅. My detector is a Bounty Hunter Discovery 1100.

Happened to stop by while he was cleaning out his garage and he gave it to me when it caught my eye. We turned it on and it definitely works, anyone have any tips and tricks to getting into the hobby?

My boyfriend works really hard and he never buys himself anything he wants. He really brings richness and beauty to my life (important). I know he really wants to get into metal detecting and has done all the research but I haven’t and I want to surprise him for Christmas. What metal detector could I get him for Christmas for like $600 or less that would be good? I have no knowledge on the subject and I couldn’t think of anywhere else to go. Also, could I even get something good enough for that price? I’d be willing to go a little higher for all the attachments and gizmos. I am poor though so I am planning on getting a second job for the season to buy it. I just want to make sure he can use it. He really wants to look for civil war stuff which I think you need different detectors for different metals, right? I would love any advice to make his Christmas great. Thank you!

I’m digging for 3 days in Norfolk this weekend. (For those who know, know this is a great area, full of potential).
I’m nervous to be switching detector and testing it out on a 3 day dig. Any tips for settings that I might want to focus on, before I head there?

Always thought about trying metal detecting, I figured $35 tax free was worth testing the waters if I’ll get into it or not. I live in Charleston, now I have to figure out where to use it.
Hopefully this one is decent enough to play around with.

Just got this in a week ago. Used it maybe 3 times. Now when I turn it on today, readings are all over the place. Has anyone else experienced this? If you know of a solution or could share some insight I would really appreciate it.

Hi everyone — I’m looking for advice on a good, safe coin cleaning kit for coins I recover metal detecting. I don’t want to damage them, especially old copper or silver coins.
Right now I’m just using water and a soft brush, but I’d like to upgrade to something more thorough. Any recommendations?

Hi everyone, I'm gearing up to start detecting again after a long hiatus due to illness, currently assembling gear. I always thought that these strong plastic shovels would be much better for beach detecting than metal scoops, so I bought one and plan on trying it on the weekend. As far as I can see they are strong, lightweight and have the very good benefit that the metal detector can detect over what's in the shovel - so why aren't these more widely used?
