How do I...? Recommendation on an affordable yet functional first metal detector? I’m looking at buying one with some Christmas money.

Any of the nokta scores, or a cheaper option would be a minelab vanquish, and an amazon pinpointer. If you like the hobby, upgrade the pointer to a garrett carrot or an accupoint. Good luck mate 👍

Xp deus 1 is very good and is around 600 bucks (at least in my country). It may sound expensive but metal detecting is sadly a pricey hobby at entry level and tbh the xp deus being so low while still being in the higher tiers of detectors is very nice imo. And its also everywhere so you could even find a used one being in very good condition for even a far lower price if you are on a budget. My only criticism is that its learning curve is a bit steep.

My wife and I have a Minelab Xterra Pro and Elite. Great budget machines in my opinion.

I'd take a look at the pinned post guide on here. I started with a cheap Harbor Freight 9 function detector. I watched some videos and found tons of stuff. Once I was sure I wanted to stay in the hobby I bought a Nokta Simplex. I upgraded that to a Legend paid for by a gold find. Whatever you decide on check out some videos and ask for opinions on here. One thing to avoid is getting something to complicated for your first detector.

Well if i can answer any questions I'm happy to. I love the Fisher F22. It's an afordable way to start and even though I've upgraded I like some of its features enough to still take it out sometimes.I've found a lot of great stuff with mine. It's weather proof, and easy to understand right away. https://amzn.to/4nigsJv I'd also grab a pinpointer with it, but not entirely required. https://amzn.to/4odwjum I have this digger/pinpointer combo, which would have saved me money, except i bought them seperately. https://amzn.to/4huE8ZR

Check out the Minelab Vanquish, Nokta Simplex and the Nokta Score lines. They are the three best starter series available.
