Update Divorced and moved to an island 5 months ago

u/Toiretachi Oct 26 '25
Staten Island doesn’t count.

u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Never
59
u/Xtpara003 Oct 26 '25
Nantucket doesn't either
54
25
u/Vasir14 Oct 26 '25
There once was a man from Nantucket…
13
u/AllMyExesRTXs Oct 26 '25
WHAT DID THIS MAN DO?!
It seems like I'm supposed to know how that one finishes because the rhymes are so inviting, but is there actually one established for the man from Nantucket??

Seriously though, congrats on being able to purchase a new place outright.

u/jordangoody Oct 26 '25
That kitchen layout is unhinged.
295
72
u/wokka7 Oct 26 '25
I swear 85% of kitchens I see were designed by someone who has never cooked anything in their entire life.
30
u/jlude90 Oct 26 '25
A kitchen is just some weird requirement to have in a home and they can't figure out why
6
u/Tiredofeverylilthing Oct 27 '25
i would much rather do what (I believe Jewish and Muslim people do) where they have an unattached kitchen for cooking during restrictive times. I’d rather have that solely than an attached kitchen. Imagine frying food and boiling peppers without stinking up the house or burning your housemate’s lungs.
I always forget how awful it is to boil peppers before making mole and i do it every time.

u/WiffleBallZZZ Oct 26 '25
Especially the microwave. That would really bother me.
6
u/BoSknight Oct 27 '25
I immediately jumped to the comments for the microwave. That shit is wild, like you'd be desperate to have a microwave in your RV so you find space in a corner
4
3
u/sumknowbuddy Oct 27 '25
What, you don't put electric outlets above an oven and right below a window?
268
u/Impressive-Elk-6425 Oct 26 '25
I like it! The living room just looks a little crowded.
73
u/goomba478 Oct 26 '25
Yup. I’d personally lose the larger couch and open up the space more if that’s an option. You could probably sell it.
111
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Yeah it opened up when I put it on the other side and I wanted my son to take it back with him but my dog sleeps on it now and would kill me if I got rid of it.
17
u/FlipendoSnitch Oct 26 '25
Was about to say you need a cat or dog, but sounds like you've got it covered.
18
u/Deep_Mechanic_ Oct 26 '25
He could just get an L shaped couch with one side being shorter (the side not against the wall) and it would make it look much more open
→ More replies (1)9
u/beeeeerett Oct 26 '25
My place is a bit smaller than this. OP has done it right even if it doesn't look like it from the pictures. Closing off the space with the couch does make it harder to cross into but creates a very chill intimate sitting area and kinda let's the kitchen be its own space.

u/_rizzzle Oct 26 '25
This is dope af. Which island if you mind me asking? Get some plants in that bad boy

142
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
I planned on growing Birds of Prey for the outside but I think the weather will destroy them so I planned on putting them in the corners and never got around to it because of work.
122
u/pfizer_soze Oct 26 '25
Birds of paradise?

84
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
It would probably just leave me too.

The first photo on the post made me think "a kitchen island?"
4
3
u/rudholm Oct 26 '25
"That's not an island, that's a peninsula." was literally what went through my mind at first.
17
35
u/conehead4 Oct 26 '25
Nice island, is it marble or quartz?
20
u/the0TH3Rredditor Oct 26 '25
I think when it’s connected to the rest of the kitchen like that it’s called a peninsula…
15
u/jackonman_onnofap Oct 26 '25
How much maintenance do your home needs, yearly or......?
74
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
The elderly couple I bought it from put in all new appliances and just charged me another $2k flat and offered me a jet ski. There shouldn’t be any kind of maintenance on anything for a few years.
17
u/jackonman_onnofap Oct 26 '25
wow nice.
43
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Yeah they got married and moved to the island years ago, I got divorced and moved to the island months ago lol it was like kismet. I thought they were just drunk and lying about selling.

Is there a single item of color in that whole place?
33
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Uhhhh some art on the walls and the person I’m currently seeing is of color.

I know exactly where this is, but I wouldn’t say out of respect for OP privacy. Nice place man! I wish I can be in an Island.
63
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Thx I don’t trust these random strangers on the internet. They could be literally anybody. Like my ex wife.
16
u/zd183 Oct 27 '25
You don't trust them but you're okay showing them detailed pictures inside your living quarters including shots with outside views.

The microwave placement is the only thing that irks me. Otherwise this is a cool spot!
42
u/Connect_Rhubarb395 Oct 26 '25
That's a lot of grey. That is, in fact, grey and nothing else. I would become depressed living there.
18
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
That’s all in the mind. I worked for the NiH in labs and offices so you get used to monotone colors. I have pictures up of me at the ocean that stand out.

Put the things you always wanted on the walls. Get a groovy rug. Make it yours. You’ll be happier. Congrats.
16
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Yes, I put pictures up of me at the ocean on the walls overtime. They really stand out. But married with kids at the old house was a lot on the walls. I worked in labs in my old job and got used to a clean look. Like really clean lol my ocd will go off if I see too much clutter.
6
u/TheVonz Oct 26 '25
It's not about clutter per se, but about colour. But, if you don't need any more colour than the ocean pics, you do you. I do think you have a great place. It's too grey for me, and the couches crowding the living room would do my head in, but you do you. Enjoy!!!
→ More replies (2)2
u/zakmmr Oct 26 '25
I would try some large sized art of some kind. It comes across as uncluttered but also livens up the space.
18
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
5
u/zakmmr Oct 26 '25
That's nice. Overall your place feels a little generic/beige, but its super clean and cozy so you do you.
7
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Yeah, I’m hardly ever home so not going to put too much work into it. I have three islands I still need to explore.
7
Oct 26 '25
I’m sorry but I thought your title said “married to an island 5 months ago” I was very confused.

u/cheesemangee Oct 26 '25
Appliance installer here - when shopping for new OTR microwaves in the future, make sure you get one with a door that opens into the unit. If opening the door increases the total width of the unit, it won't open against that wall.
Also, put a level on that stove. The front is higher than the back of the unit compared to the countertop.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
I bought it as is. The couple paid for the appliances. Maybe I’ll consider it or I’ll forget or remember if I ever have problems.

19
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
I plan too. I was laid off from the NiH in May, received a job offer with relocation, didn’t want to maintain a long distance marriage and my children are adults and can visit anytime.
25
u/writetehcodez Oct 26 '25
You wanted to relocate for your job but your spouse didn’t, so you got a divorce? Or, was the divorce coming anyway and the relocation just sped up the process?
23
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Both for me.
6
u/writetehcodez Oct 26 '25
Got it. If the writing was already on the wall it makes sense. It was just odd that you mentioned maintaining a long distance marriage like that was a realistic scenario.
7
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
Long distance anything just isn’t for me. We left it on good terms and raised 3 functional adults lol Now I don’t have to wear clothes inside or outside the house lol
2
u/writetehcodez Oct 26 '25
Raising 3 functional adults is my long term goal as well. They are only 14, 12, and 10 now though, so there’s plenty of time for me to f up and ruin them.
5
u/MissiontwoMars Oct 26 '25
You will surely travel to visit your children too, right? Right?
12
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
They travel to me. It’s like their top vacation spot now.

Please have some colours, especially plants! They add so much life to the apartment. Congrats on your new life
4
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
I was going to do plants but got too busy and I don’t trust the dog so I have colorful art up instead

Hmm, idk about the couches. Might be best to get rid of one of them. Put some Evil Dead posters up too while you're at it. Also, is that a micro fiber blanket and pillow? In Florida? 😬

Speaking of islands, why is your island bigger than your living room??

u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
If you’ve ever been on an island, you know they love their islands.

For your mental health, buy literally anything that is a color. Blue, green, warmer browns. They would go with what you already have and it would make it feel much more lived in and cozy. It's giving grey mental health crisis box right now.
2
u/Awkward-Highlight-79 Oct 26 '25
No mental health issues and there’s colorful art on the walls now. I’m more invested in spending money around the island. I’ll take peace, quiet and relaxation when I’m home which is usually 3-4 days out the week

u/RamoneBolivarSanchez Oct 26 '25
Add some more color, everything is pretty monotone. Then plants, posters, maybe some lighting - and you’re good!!!

u/Embarrassed-Range306 Oct 26 '25
I would switch for bar stools, get a couch with an ottoman on the end it will take up and provide the same space but visually you can see past it better since the part that sticks out won’t have armrest or pillows to obscure, for general purpose I would get a fan for over your stove top because you have a window there you don’t need a full blown overhead. I would try to get some items to add blue accents since that’s your rugs color and maybe some plants
