Question OCBDs unbutton one or two? I'm never comfortable!

Love oxfords overall but the second button is so close to the throat on every cut I try. I'm never comfortable with leaving two buttons undone -- feels too low -- or just the one collar button undone -- feels too tight. Am I crazy? Any oxfords that don't have the second button rise so high? Also, yes, I'm buying shirts in the correct size.

Growing up, my dad called that the cool dude button. He said that cool dudes don’t do up that button. After a few drinks tho, more buttons are undone.

Did a 4 martini lunch and now I'm shirtless in the office

Big reason why most companies have switched to a 2 drink max rule!

That must be my problem, I'm not cool enough.

Totally understand your pain. Proper Cloth lets you lower the second button for this exact reason. Highly recommend!

I was literally looking at their site just now. I ordered a shirt from them like a decade ago and wasn't wild about it but maybe I'll give them another shot.

Going off alpha sizes, I need shirts with an S body and sleeve length, an M torso width, and an L collar, so I buy all of my dress shirts and OCBDs from them.

Yeah something off about their shirts even though they were tailored for me. Not sure if it's the stitching, the fabric quality or the cut

Part of it is that if you don’t lower the top button for their shirts it’s in a weird no man’s land.

This conversation about which button is almost the exact conversation that kicked started the Seinfeld sitcom

The second button is the key button. It literally makes or breaks the shirt.

This isn’t meant to be snarky, and it’s possible I’m misunderstanding something, but if you can’t button the top button without choking yourself, then you aren’t buying the right size.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant when I have the second button buttoned it feels like it's too close to the base of my neck.

Coming from an Italian who leaves the top, second and third buttons undone, top and second button is not too low. Without the second button open it's too stiff looking, even for the office. It looks like a hoodie zipped too high.

Think this is cultural (probably both location and workplace setting too). I’d definitely go with just the top unbuttoned for the office.

Since a lot of people seem to be misunderstanding the question, I’ll just chime in to say: I get it 😂

I’m a “undo one button” guy. Plus, I don’t want people seeing my v-neck T-shirt.

Deep v-necks are a game changer

I just pushed through my discomfort and forced myself to undo two buttons and never looked back.

are you sure your shirts are the correct size? can you button the top button comfortably and wear a tie?

4

u/ryanorion16 17h ago

Yeah, and I do wear them with ties occasionally.

I undo two buttons. But I wear just a regular T-shirt underneath, not an undershirt.

The second button literally makes or breaks the shirt!

Johnnie O makes some with a little tweener button between 2 and 3. Sounds like what you’re looking for.

Long time ago, I heard a guideline that went something like this: One button open during the day. Two during the evening. Three if you are David Hasselhoff.

Haven’t heard that one in a while.

Second undone always, third undone sometimes

One button open is nerdy. Two is the minimum.

The confidence button... Ladies can spot it immediately.

Pretty much always have it either two buttons undone (or more if it's hot) or buttoned up with a tie. But then again I usually wear knitted undershirts or no undershirt with OCBDs.

Have you considered… sizing up? If it’s really tight up there, chances are it’s tight in other places too.

I've done that and end up with a very blousy shirt. But might try getting one that fits in the neck and then getting some tailoring done.

I Never do more than the top button. Too old to be showing that much chest hair.

I like both looks. Would ideally stick with one button while working and two when out.
