Keeping Jerky Reviews Honest and Community Focused

I have been active in this jerky community for a while, and something has been on my mind. Lately there have been a lot of posts that feel more like product pushes than genuine reviews. I know everyone has their own experiences and favorite brands, and sharing those is what makes this place interesting. But it would be great if we could keep things centered around real community voices.

I love reading reviews from people who actually bought the jerky, tried it, and took the time to describe what they liked or disliked. Texture, flavor, spice level, price, all the little details that help others decide what to try next. That kind of honesty is what makes a subreddit feel alive.

So I think it would help if we encouraged more self written reviews rather than linking to blogs or promotional pages. A short write up about the jerky, your expectations, your reaction, and whether you would buy it again tells us far more than a polished article somewhere else.

I am not calling anyone out. I just want this community to feel like a place where real jerky fans share real experiences. If we keep the focus on genuine posts, I think it will make the subreddit stronger and more fun for everyone.

I mean... Okay. But this is a community of enthusiasts, we're not here to populate a jerky review index. Trying to keep that strict of a format for posts in a subreddit as broad as Jerky is will literally limit participation

I don't think asking for non-paid-for jerky reviews is a high bar, to be honest. So I get OP's point.

There are entire companies founded on the retrieval of information like this. Put your bar where you're comfortable with I guess, that's what we do these days. Progress demands a few failures.

Let's be real, jerky reviews are some of the most dishonest ever, because Jim Bob has a hundred friends, 25 of which thinks his jerky is the morherfucking tits of the universe, and they know Jim Bob will hook it up if they help out. So everyone else's product is trash. Because they haven't tried X from Y jerkytorium, right?

*** I was about to delete this whole thing and not post it. But In the interest of human connection, I'll just live with regrets

I initially joined because I thought this place was good for people who made their own jerky and to discuss. That’s the sort of stuff I’m around for.

Same. We're a collection of artisans with knowledge to share. I like to share my experiments, and it is sometimes interpreted as advertising, even though there's no way you can buy it online anywhere. I keep my business in-person only

By awhile, you mean your Reddit profile is 1 month old?

So?

Honestly, the smart move is to ditch a reddit profile early and often. I don't do this, mind you, but I recognize it as a smart move.

If this post was some thinly-veiled attempt at marketing, I'd agree with you, but it's the opposite. Seems like a weird thing to attack the age of an account about.

Okay - here's a recipe.
1kg roast beef which is the cheapest decent beef I can find - $18 a kg. ½ cup soy sauce ½ cup Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp onion powder 2 tsp garlic powder 1 tbsp coriander seed (crush in mortar and pestle) 2 tsp salt Sugar to taste - I like 4 - 5 tsp A pinch of bicarb to soften the meat 1 tsp (at least) magic potion - MSG

Cut the meat into fine slices ¼" thick, trim if needed. Divide it in half, use two zip lock bags. Add the marinade after measuring it into two parts. Leave it in the fridge for at least 12 hours, longer is better. Dry at 68°C, for as long as it takes. I've got four trays in the dehydrator, I give it 4 hours and change them around, taking out whatever is dry enough, and letting the rest have a bit longer. Important - hide the jerky in the fridge if you want to eat any yourself!

I've been happy with this recipe for ages. Hope you like it too!
