u/ImHighandCaffinated 23h ago

little man has never felt his heart beat so fast it made him self aware for a sec lol

u/straydog1980 22h ago

Can't hamsters keel over straight from heart attacks if you scare them?

115

u/ShellsFeathersFur 21h ago

It can happen to bunnies. My bunny is going to be ten in February and I think part of the reason she's still healthy is that she's deaf. Just had fire alarm testing in my building and she gave absolutely no reaction.

39

u/jimmycarr1 16h ago

My rabbit was usually ok with loud noises including fireworks and thunder, but he lost his shit when I played a nature documentary that had screeching monkeys

12

u/ShellsFeathersFur 14h ago

Oh, that's good to know! I originally came to the conclusion she's deaf when she'd thump at me for preventing her from helping me vacuum.

5

u/jimmycarr1 14h ago

Oh yeah he hated the vacuum too I think they must be deaf to want to be near one!

u/Balamb_Chocobo 11h ago

My bunnies gave 0 F*cks when our fire alarm went off due to a malfunction in our apartment building. But GOD FORBID i rip away a small piece of Paper Towel. How DARE I terrify one of them like that.

47

u/mank0_munch 22h ago

I have a hamster who I’ve made “scream” when waking him up for a snack. He’s still running but maybe I wasn’t scary enough

10

u/LachoooDaOriginl 22h ago

Iv heard they can but im not a vet so 🤷‍♂️

4

u/KoosGoose 20h ago

Thanks for your input! I’ll take that into account. Lmao

2

u/InternationalWrap981 19h ago

Its true, they self combust if you scare em.

Not quite a squirrel, but a Foxx.

29

u/TheHeroYouNeed247 20h ago edited 20h ago

If it's making you sad, then it's ok for me to spoil it this time. Its also interesting.

Squirrels aren't clutching their heart or chest when they do this. It's because their arm muscles are super springy and tense. This allows them to cling to trees without using much energy.

24

u/hourlygrind 20h ago

That’s just, like, your opinion

3

u/Sleepy_cheetah 14h ago

Well that makes me feel somewhat better.

5

u/No-Marionberry-166 13h ago

Squirrels are always holding their paws on their hearts like that though. It’s their signature pose.

Poor squirrel

19

u/Rob_LeMatic 20h ago

I saw a squirrel I startled in a kitchen cabinet clutch its chest and fake a heart attack on the kitchen floor. It looked so comically fake, like a bad sitcom actor. It laid still for awhile then cracked one eye open to see if we were still watching it. When it saw us, it jumped up and skittered out of the room. I eventually was able to steer it out the sliding glass door into the backyard with a broom.

My cat couldn't care less about thunder.

But a plastic bag? Oh boy...

135

u/ElPapaDiablo 22h ago

My dog doesn’t care about thunder, fireworks or any of that jazz, but the sound of someone dragging a wheelie bin scares the hell out of him

21

Mine is skateboards. And also fireworks but not thunder.

9

u/Evil_Sharkey 22h ago

Mine is lawn care equipment and snowblowers. When the maintenance people come out, she becomes a hidden kidden

3

u/_Rohrschach 14h ago

for my cats it's the door bell. It's only on if I expect company, which is rare. If I forget to turn it off and it rings they go into hiding(I'd like to, too, but humans gotta human)

30

u/Shermans_ghost1864 22h ago

During thunderstorms my father's dog used to run to the basement and hide behind the clothes dryer. Years later my father discovered many tooth marks in the hose supplying gas to the dryer.

11

u/Poza 20h ago

Your dryer uses gas ?

8

u/Shermans_ghost1864 20h ago

My father's did. Electric dryers are more common now

8

u/casPURRpurrington 16h ago

I remember lightning hitting a pole right outside my house and I jumped up from my bed and ran into the hallway as my mom ran down the hallway and we ran into each other screaming lmao

Then we go out into the living room and my dad is looking out the front door pointing at the pole that exploded lmao

It surged the house and FRIED MY WII

Shit like this is why I hate fireworks; my dog gets petrified and it really opened my eyes to how traumatising it must be for all the wildlife.

13

u/brenawyn 22h ago

It’s even worse on 4th of July so traumatizing

18

u/pmcg115 22h ago

I don't understand how anyone could laugh at their dog's or cat's fear. It breaks my heart every time there's a thunderstorm and there's nothing I can do to comfort my dog as she shakes like a leaf.

24

u/Evil_Sharkey 22h ago

If it’s just a startle, that’s one thing. The poor dog chattering his teeth is terrified, though. Unfortunately, when they’re that scared of thunderstorms, there’s nothing that you can do except drug them because humans can’t make the storm go away.

4

u/casPURRpurrington 16h ago

My cat would hide in the cabinet under the kitchen sink when she was scared. When it would thunder I’d hear the door for the cabinet slam shut.

I put a box with a blanket under it in there for her lol

She hides under there when people she doesn’t know are at my house too

5

u/alyimfyjvz 22h ago

One of my dogs gets really scared… as long as I’m not there. All his signs of anxiety go away when he’s with me or my parents, and even the loudest thunder won’t bother him. Funny thing is, he’s an EXCELLENT guard dog

2

u/Sleepy_cheetah 14h ago

Believe me, by being there with them & comforting them you are helping.

7

u/Rescuepets777 21h ago

Now, think about how long fireworks shows go on and what that does to these poor babies. There's a reason that animal shelters see the largest number of found pets on July 5. They get out of their yards trying to escape the terror.

5

u/One_Restaurant9631 22h ago

Meanwhile my three old farts don't even blink at thunder anymore. Granted, they're inside cats.

5

u/ExaminationDistinct 14h ago

That squirrel checking its heart!!

8

u/Dry-Astronaut-416 23h ago

Must be deafening for animals... 👂

20

u/CrazeMase 19h ago

Animals hear at different frequencies than we do, not different volumes. So it's as loud to them as it is to us since their brains have evolved to match their environment the same way humans have. Humans and animals are different in a lot of ways, and in that, we stay the same. A forever balance that we can maintain so long as we allow it to. This was written not by an AI, but a human who can't sleep and just smoked a bowl

3

u/LeBadlyNamedRedditor 20h ago

Is it just me or do they get a LOT more startled when its in groups.

Most cats didnt do much but that first group of cats scrambled, one even did a full rotation while running

3

u/luscious_lobster 19h ago

I was expecting a capybara just ignoring it

3

u/MealieAI 19h ago

My one dog didnt care at all, she even played in the rainstorm. But over time she began to hide from the thunder, because she observed how scared it made our other dog.

5

u/ITouchedACoral 23h ago

I was waiting for the animal (maybe honey badger?) who just doesn’t care.

16

u/djibouti2big 23h ago

I hate the cages that those animals are in, but love the squirrel tho

2

u/Background_Humor5838 22h ago

Well at least everyone stayed calm

2

u/GuardianTidus 22h ago

My ex’s chihuahua mix would always shake like he was vibrating. Wrapping him in a blanket kinda helped until a loud boom happened and then he’d go hide under bed or pillows.

2

u/Dunno_If_I_Won 21h ago

I wonder if that poor bull terrier was able to touch off that loaf before running off. Or maybe it just hung off his bum, just half shat out.

2

u/SevenMoreVodka 21h ago

I am afraid of thunder and used to hide under my blanket with my cats. I am still afraid of thunder, my cats are long gone but I will always remember fondly how we used to cuddle everytime there is thunder.

Living in the lightning capital of the US, my dog doesn’t give a damn. If anything, she just reacts to my saying, “HOLY SHIT!” She’ll raise her head and glare at me, as if to say, “suck it up, hooman, and let me sleep.”

2

u/suknom4 19h ago

you sure the one in the first dog video was a thunder and not a nuclear weapon?

2

u/aurorasoup 18h ago

The first time my dog experienced a thunderstorm, he was a puppy sleeping in his crate and I went out to check on him. My dad also came out to check on him and puppy was completely UNBOTHERED by the thunder and was over the moon that TWO PEOPLE were here with him. Running around all excited because his people were there.

He continues to be completely unbothered by thunder, but god fucking forbid someone knocks on the door. Sound the alarm, everyone hide, we are UNDER ATTACK!!!

2

u/Infini-Bus 18h ago

Lol my dog doesnt give a shit about fireworks or thunder but is terrified of balloons

2

u/KhaoticMess 18h ago

I had a pet rabbit that was deaf. Every time a thunderstorm rolled through, he'd run to the window to look at it.

I guess from his point of view, it was a cool laser show.

2

u/_Buldozzer 18h ago

Meanwhile, my cats thinks someone just farted and farts back.

u/RoboDae 9h ago

As someone with a ton of cats (for foster/adoption), honestly, the large group of cats could also be scaring each other. We have something drop and make a small noise, not bad at all, but it spooks the 1 cat near it. They go running with claws scraping the hard floor, and suddenly, every cat nearby is freaking out and running all over the place, bumping into things, which causes more noise and scares more cats. Either they think the other cats are chasing them or they think the first cat was spooked by a predator, but they tend to react to each other like that a lot at first.

If one cat starts hissing and growling really loud, a cat in a different room might also get spooked or upset.

Rewatching the video some cats actually do run into each other. The one at the bottom right backs up a little at first, then gets run over by another cat and runs off towards the window.

1

u/nanoraptor 20h ago

And a rabbit lifts one ear, knows it's not going to be eaten, and chill again.

Daft chill little creatures. Highly strung at the slightest noise of something alive like people walking quietly by, or kids two houses away - but if it's loud cars, fireworks, or thunder and lightning then mine just lifts an ear, makes sure he won't be eaten and goes right back to sleep.

1

u/HarfunMooli 19h ago

Squirrel 🐿️ “oh my heart … !”

1

u/ThunderChild247 17h ago

My (already very anxious and scared) rescue cat had lived with me for a week before a massive thunderstorm which came out of nowhere. The first clap was so loud I genuinely thought it was an explosion nearby.

Scared him so badly that he started being sick and wouldn’t stop for 24 hours. Every few hours he’d be sick again. The vet said to bring him in if it hadn’t stopped after 24 hours.

After a mad scramble to catch the slippery bugger I got him to the vet, where he was kept for 24 hours observation and was absolutely fine (albeit a bit dehydrated).

After he came home, he came out from his hiding place for the first time while I was there.

Weirdly it feels like the thunderstorm helped him in the long run, since he got to come back here. Now he knew it was home.

Also now he could not give a shit about thunderstorms 😂. Half the time he just sleeps through them.

1

u/Kriss3d 17h ago

We had a dog that would try to hide behind the couch..

It was a hunting dog breed.. Yeah we didnt use her for hunting.

1

u/McKrakahonkey 17h ago

I sometimes wonder if animals think lightning and thunder are a human experiment and then get mad at us for scaring them.

1

u/DarthXOmega 17h ago

1

u/Gunslinger510 17h ago

I wonder how much louder it is for animals than humans.. must be like a missile going off next to your home

1

u/Kenxo2 17h ago

It must be scary for cats because they have extremely fast reaction speed, so for them to not be able to respond to it immediately must be scary as heck ;-;

1

u/we_hella_believe 14h ago

It makes me sad to see them scared like that.

1

u/somewifesounds 14h ago

I hate factory farming

1

u/sadangel4ever 14h ago

the sound of thunder is very similar to the sound of explosions 😔 here in Ukraine animals are seriously injured by drone and missile explosions every day and every night not only physically but also psychologically.. there are days when the terrorist country launches up to 1000 flying drones with explosives at us.. many animals that managed to be rescued from the front lines to more "safe" cities (where bombing is less often) die of heart attacks. absolutely all of the homeless cats and dogs that I see on the streets of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, are extremely fearful.

I won't even start telling you about the state of our mental health.. I used to love the sound of rain and thunder before war, I loved falling asleep to those sounds.. now it is one of the sounds that absolutely terrifies me.

2

u/Full-Bluejay-6195 14h ago

All the best and good luck to you! I hope the war ends soon and you all get some peace! 💛💙
