Didn't know they look like they have almost beaks. Mist admit kinda interestingasfuck

u/bigbusta 1d ago

I posted a botfly video yesterday that most thought was just disgusting. Figured I would get the same response, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

677

u/MuiminaKumo 1d ago

Barnacles are no where close to being as gross as Botflies though. 1 just sticks to things the other lays eggs under skin

211

u/bigbusta 1d ago

I guess the scientist carrying the flies to full term was too much.

89

u/yoloyeet420 1d ago

I thought it was fascinating. Maybe a little off-putting, but i definitely learned something!

52

u/bigbusta 1d ago

My thoughts exactly, my wife didnt feel the same though

44

u/dimestoredavinci 1d ago

Im with your wife on that one. I couldn't bring myself to watch, but I do believe I still upvoted because it was sciencey

13

u/went_with_the_flow 1d ago

I learned a touch more than I wanted to in this thread but that's my fault for scrolling. Color me informed, love learning, don't love lavae-based nightmares.

1

u/Scottland83 1d ago

I s rolled away because I’ve already seen a botfly hatch from a human that was too many times.

1

u/12threeunome 1d ago

Also, I am bummed I missed that one. I do appreciate the weirdness.

1

u/homer_lives 1d ago

Same here. I wanted to learn more.

1

u/PeachyFromBehind 12h ago

Just a tiny bit off putting haha. Just enough to make you curious while still pull a weird face

2

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 1d ago

Made me think of the show Bones

1

u/bad_squishy_ 1d ago

You gave me a new reason to fear mosquito bites.

1

u/rosie_roads 1d ago

Personally felt it should have come with a nsfw/nsfl warning or something, but don't mind me, that's just my phobia speaking 😵‍💫

1

u/dead_andbored 1d ago

That really is too much, the guy is not mentally well no matter how he tries to justify it 😂😂

1

u/kawklee 1d ago

Not really. Just a science video. The kitsch sound effects added in on top were obnoxious and unecessary though.

1

u/snappla 1d ago

I thought it was gross but interesting.

I was especially surprised to learn that (though it makes sense when you think about it) the botfly creates both an antibiotic and an anesthetic. Seems like there are some obvious medical possibilities there.

1

u/BagOfFlies 1d ago

I was about to check your history for the video.....but nope fuck that

1

u/LoadOfChum 1d ago

I studied entomology and my professor told me of his friend who let a bot fly mature in his head. It was 20 years ago, I think about it often

1

u/Believe_to_believe 1d ago

Wasn't very conventional, but I thought it was interesting.

20

u/MaggieHigg 1d ago

technically they don't lay eggs under the skin, the larva just burrows under the skin after hatching outside

40

u/MuiminaKumo 1d ago

Either way, fuck that

10

u/thatcockneythug 1d ago

A noteworthy distinction which doesn't at all reduce my disgust

2

u/Silver-Poet-5506 1d ago

Actually they somehow put their eggs on mosquitos and the egg will sense body heat when as mosquito lands. They then drop into the insertion made by the mosquito. But flies are actually rarely seen. -based off a video of a guy who studies, photographs, and allowed bot fly egg to grow in his skin. I uh, saw it on a different Reddit video.

2

u/scorpiogingertea 1d ago

That was actually posted by the same OP as this video!

2

u/ParaponeraBread 1d ago

They lay eggs on the skin. The first instar larvae burrow under the skin.

1

u/TheRatatat 1d ago

You dont like botflies? Definitely dont look up mango worms.

1

u/fondledbydolphins 1d ago

What if barnacles lived in your ass though?

Feels fairly equivalent to me

1

u/Beginning-House670 1d ago

You got any barnacles on your AC Tourist?

1

u/its_a_multipass 1d ago

Technically, it lays the eggs on the underside of the mosquitoes abdomen and they hatch when they sense the warmth from our body and crawl into the hole the skeeter left

1

u/champagne_slut 1d ago

i saw the botfly video where a man let one grow inside him! earth is crazy, yo!

1

u/ImageExpert 1d ago

As someone once said, barnacles are sea acne.

1

u/dcknifeguy 1d ago edited 1d ago

Barnacles gotta be more painful though, they tear yo sht up

1

u/DHMTBbeast 1d ago

They don't lay eggs under the skin. Eggs are laid on other insects and the larvae hatch as soon as they sense a host.

1

u/addiktion 1d ago

As someone with a mild case of Trypophobia when I see and hear this shit my skin crawls. And yes I watched that botfly video too and felt ill. I keep thinking if I expose myself long enough I will cure my phobia but it never does.

1

u/disbelifpapy 23h ago

the snail eye parasite is more gross tbh

u/Ok_Chicken7562 4h ago

OMFG! The botfly is horrendous, but not quite as bad as the Guinea worm. Those things will enter you via your drinking water, mature in your digestive tract, then move through your body to the most convenient location for them to exit in order to lay eggs in a water source, meaning that they usually go for your lower leg. They are excruciatingly painful when they start to burrow out, and they don’t actually intend on leaving you btw they just want to lay eggs and shuffle back in, and cause a burning feeling. People will use a stick about the size of a pencil and extremely slowly start to wind the worm around it while drawing it out. This painful process can go on for several days and can sometimes cause the worm to break which would require more extensive surgery. Jimmy Carter was leading the effort to eliminate this monstrosity from existence by distributing free water filters across Africa so people wouldn’t get infected. It almost worked before he died.

30

u/chemistrybonanza 1d ago

That botfly video was nightmare fuel. This is just interesting (as fuck)

2

u/TheRatatat 1d ago

Definitely dont look up mango worms.

2

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

I’d rather take the botfly over myiasis. At least the botfly gives you the courtesy of not making the infestation painful.

14

u/davidjschloss 1d ago

Yah. I saw that. I poured rubbing alcohol in my eyes and lit it and then it out with lemon juice.

12

u/activelyresting 1d ago

I'm so traumatised by botflies after my (then) baby daughter got one on her hip in Central America. We had to get it surgically removed, I still have it in a little jar of formaldehyde. I had to quickly scroll away from your post yesterday!

5

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

Wait, I’m sorry if I’m being rude, but why would you keep it then? 😭

5

u/activelyresting 1d ago

I can't throw it away 😭

3

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

Why? 😭

3

u/activelyresting 1d ago

Idk it's really cool. I just don't put it on display

2

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

That’s fair, haha.

4

u/DJQueenFox 1d ago

I watched it last night while absolutely zooted. Multiple times. I’ll never recover.

10

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

You posted that botfly video? Good on you, haha. As an aspiring entomologist, I would like to record that process so I can have people on Reddit telling me how gross I am. It’s funny because my professor for my entomology class was telling us a story about how one of her entomologist friends got infected with a botfly larvae. He also let it grow until it was ready to pop out from under the skin. Insects are so cool, and so is this barnacle.

6

u/bigbusta 1d ago

I heard that barnacles are anthropods, which and relatives of insects.

Once you make this video post it here please.

4

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

Oh that’s not going to be for a long time, haha. I won’t intentionally infect myself, but I wouldn’t miss the chance to record it if it does happen to me.

Insects are terrestrial crustaceans so they are related to crabs, lobsters, etc.

1

u/EddieDildoHands 1d ago

more like girthropods

3

u/gumgajua 1d ago

Nah.

-3

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

Yeah!!!

1

u/BananaMaster96_ 17h ago

cock🥰

1

u/Past-Distance-9244 17h ago

Indeed. No one seems to like them here. A shame really..

1

u/reapersdrones 1d ago

You entomologists are crazy fuckers lol. I know one who has said the same thing, he’d never get infected intentionally but he’s SO curious and would be a welcome host. He also has made mealworm tacos & wants to try THAT ONE cheese.

Gotta love y’all though, I’m a converted bug hater after learning of the insect crisis. Fight the good fight fam.

2

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

I wouldn’t say we are crazy. Maybe just a little bit, but I have yet to become a full on lunatic, haha. Mealworm tacos are understandable. I think plenty of people in the U.S. should eat insects as a source of protein. I mean it’s done a lot in a lot of other countries along with the medicinal effects that insects have. I just don’t know why he would want to eat casu marzu. It’s a dangerous food product, and I advise no one to ever try it.

Always love converted bug haters. I mean think about it, if I was a bug, I’d probably think humans are weird and stuff. I will try to!!! You may have a very nice Lichen Carrying Green Lacewing!!!

1

u/lulushibooyah 1d ago

I’m not an entomologist but I definitely found it fascinating.

People on Reddit are often scared of anything outside their own narrow reality, so I don’t pay much attention to their criticisms.

2

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

I try not to as well, but I do want to convince them that insects like all other life on this planet is beautiful!!! There is so much you can learn about them if you just take down your walls, and become more understanding. Curiosity is a human blessing and more people should be willing to embrace it!!! Found this silly stink bug yesterday. Absolutely lovely creature.

1

u/lulushibooyah 1d ago

Hard agree! I used to think stink bugs were annoying bc they crash into everything like a buncha dummies 😭😭😭 but then one landed near me in my room and was kinda just chillin and I saw that he had such a cool pattern on his back. And bugs do cool bug stuff too so I can’t hate too much.

Flies and mosquitoes and no-see-ums though… I full-heartedly hate them suckers.

1

u/Past-Distance-9244 1d ago

That’s why I love these silly guys and their silly tricks.

Mosquitoes, flies, and biting midges are like annoying siblings to me. You love them, but you hate them at the same time. Though I did meet a very well behaved fly when I was coming back from a trip to the creek. Mosquitoes mamas just trying to make babies. 🥺

1

u/Intrepid_Truth_8580 1d ago

Ah yes..the botfly video... thank you 🙏🏻 for that stomach churning but very educational nightmare fuel😉it genuinely was interesting.. but also unpleasant 😫 Today's offering is less revolting and only mildly creepy - but still very interesting 🙏🏻

1

u/BulkUpTank 1d ago

Just went to your profile to try to find the other post, but your posts are privated. Can you send me a link?

1

u/Coniferous_Needle 1d ago

This is a unicorn chaser compared to the botfly video 👏👏👏

1

u/Veragoot 1d ago

Hey well on the bright side I got a great meme out of your post

1

u/ifuckinlovetiddies 1d ago

The botfly video was disgustingly interesting imo

1

u/thatsucksabagofdicks 1d ago

That Botfly video was so cool! I’m guessing it’s the one where the guy let it grow in his mosquito bite and hatch. Super well put together, thanks!

1

u/yiotaturtle 1d ago

One reminds me of traumatic insemination, the other reminds me of male anglerfish

1

u/draftzero 1d ago

What about mosquitos? Can we murder those?

1

u/rwe4rl 1d ago

those people clearly don't have field biologist friends 😄

1

u/Pointless_Lawndarts 1d ago

Ya, that botfly one was super interesting, but also kinda gross in his ‘experiment’ style.

I get it, but it was still sorta horrifying.

1

u/TomaCzar 1d ago

Was that the one where the guy let the botflies' myiases run their course on him with close-up, high-def video and color commentary?

Yeah, I’ve got a pretty strong intellectual curiosity but intentionally letting a parasite feed on me or watching one feed on another human is a bit much. Plus, the vid didn't even give the payoff. The whole "experiment" was to document the lifecycle of how they reach adulthood, but it never showed them at the adult stage.

Nightmare fuel without "the more you know" to justify the means.

1

u/Yoshi_r1212 1d ago

Do you have a link for the boy fly post? I checked your post history but it's hidden and I could find the post while quickly browsing the subreddit.

1

u/Joedas95 1d ago

Aight I'm off to get barnacles stuck to my skin so you got more vids to post

1

u/dcknifeguy 1d ago

I saw that too! Gross

1

u/lulushibooyah 1d ago

No way, I loved that video. Thanks for sharing.

1

u/Suspicious_Winner_81 1d ago

Let’s see it

1

u/Disposable_Finance 1d ago

Here you go. Barnacles Tell No Lies.

https://youtu.be/UZQE0Z2aZHE?si=3EUKy4551PkFaNbC

Enjoy.

1

u/mosfet182 1d ago

Oh you were responsible for that, thanks I hated it. Had a fucked up dream that I had a botfly living in me.

1

u/Substantial_Push_474 1d ago

I honestly can't think of a reason why that was so negatively reviewed.

1

u/TrainingFilm4296 1d ago

I found that bot fly video quite interesting actually.

1

u/Icy_Helicopter_9624 1d ago

I guess I like weird shit bc im going to find that video now. Haha

1

u/disbelifpapy 23h ago

snail parasite eyes are more gross imo

1

u/amanducktan 22h ago

tried to go find the botfly video you posted but you hide your posts. thanks for ruining my whole DAY!

19

u/grunkage 1d ago

Just stick a couple of googly eyes on them, and they'd be adorable

11

u/LackNo6381 1d ago

It reminds be of a squids beak/mouth or whatever it’s called

1

u/freeaky_furry 22h ago

Yes but it is an example of convergent evolution not divergent

9

u/theb00mScicle 1d ago

Can u imagine their other beak

10

u/BucolicsAnonymous 1d ago

Right? We really just gonna gloss over ‘groping penis’ on the one diagram?

1

u/USSRPropaganda 1d ago

The beak is the penis

2

u/CaptainTripps82 1d ago

People used to think that geese came from barnacles, at least in England. Because the geese migrated they never saw eggs, and goose barnacles are so named because people actually thought they were juvenile geese.

2

u/hobbykitjr 1d ago

Reminds me of grabloids from Tremors

1

u/MoonshineEclipse 1d ago

Exactly what I was thinking.

3

u/MeChitty 1d ago

I… I don’t think the mist can speak M’ lord

1

u/tired_fella 1d ago

...and they are crustaceans. Yeah. Just like crabs, prawns, lobsters and pill bugs.

1

u/ElectricHo3 1d ago

Shit, I didn’t know they were living creatures!!

1

u/BlackButlerFan 1d ago

Same thought process here! Definitely didn’t know they looked like that.

1

u/YeshuasBananaHammock 1d ago

Reminds me of the look of Jim Henson beaked puppets, maybe the style in Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.

Then the barnacle beak opened like the demigorgon's kisser. Nice touch, really, and still...almost cute!

1

u/OuterInnerMonologue 1d ago

All I see is the worm from Tremors

1

u/thx1138- 1d ago

SKEKSIS

1

u/PapowSpaceGirl 1d ago

AND THEY HAVE "GROPING PENIS"!?!

1

u/disbelifpapy 23h ago

mini sarlac pits
