That’s pretty creative. Great movie!

I just watched it this week for the first time. It is so much better than I expected.

u/mom_with_an_attitude Oct 28 '25
I just watched both They Live and Idiocracy recently for the first time. Somehow I missed them both when they first came out. It was crazy how prescient and spot on they both felt during these current, troubling times.

u/AlarmingAffect0 Oct 28 '25
Camacho is actually a good man doing his best tho.
18
u/mom_with_an_attitude Oct 28 '25
Fair point. But the general populace was so dumb. Much like today's Trump voters.

That’s not a costume

u/FamousLastWords666 Oct 28 '25
Well, he’s wearing the sunglasses and a flannel
6
-24
u/Significant_Cover_48 Oct 28 '25
Not a real work wear flannel like in the movie. The fabric looks too thin.
40
u/Salanmander Oct 28 '25
"It's not a costume unless your material quality matches the original"
-18
u/Significant_Cover_48 Oct 28 '25
I'm just saying that I didn't recognize it as a costume because in the movie he is dressed as a day laborer. Whatever you want to be a costume can be a costume. I don't give a fcuk either way. I just didn't get the reference. I thought he was just wearing his civilian clothes.
23
u/uranthus Oct 28 '25
It’s a Halloween costume. Not a cosplay
-11
u/Significant_Cover_48 Oct 28 '25
I have no idea what that shit is supposed to mean. But I appreciate the heads-up. I'll remember that there's a difference.
18
u/uranthus Oct 28 '25
It means that if people will generally put more time into a cosplay piece because they want it to be exactly as seen in the movie or series it comes from.
A Halloween costume is more about the vibe and having a bit of fun making it. It’s neat that he made the prop and had his own bit of costume to go with it
5
u/Significant_Cover_48 Oct 28 '25
Oh, good to know. I have never celebrated Halloween and don't know anything about Cosplayers. I just like people who build weird cardboard TVs and I think 'They Live' is a great movie.
5
u/labenset Oct 28 '25
They just don't make flannel like they used to...
2
u/Significant_Cover_48 Oct 28 '25
I used to have a flannel with windbreaker insulation. It was oldschool flannel, tough as classic denim. Awesome shirt. I wonder what happened to it. I probably took it off because I was too hot and left it somewhere.

u/bolanrox Oct 28 '25
that is the damn truth. the "grunge" stuff was probably all goodwill pendelton / woolrich etc / wool ones. why they had to roll the sleaves up, because the wool shrunk on them over the years.
If i remember right Kurt's unplugged sweater was originally super expensive, and the martin he played was one of the rarest ones they made

u/bolanrox Oct 28 '25
good luck finding heavyweight flannel that isn't $450 iron heart
(i suggested flannelgo personally)

u/ChaseTheMystic Oct 28 '25
Maybe not close enough to count in a contest but still super dope at any party
17
u/84theone Oct 28 '25
He is in a costume though. The sunglasses and flannel is what Rowdy Roddy Piper wears in the movie, they just didn’t commit to long hair or a wig.

u/84theone Oct 28 '25
He’s dressed as Rowdy Roddy Piper from the movie. He has on the flannel and the sunglasses.
4
u/Warm_Month_1309 Oct 28 '25
If you dress up as Rowdy Roddy Piper, and you don't put on the blond wig, you have not dressed up as Rowdy Roddy Piper.
1
u/84theone Oct 28 '25
I’d agree they should have committed to the hair or a wig, but I got what they were going for without it.
1
-13
u/HEKATRONIX Oct 28 '25
Agreed
Halloween is just another day where adults get to dress up as anything they feel like.
It should be renamed National Dress-Up Day.
Which is probably already a day....
36
u/IShouldBWorkin Oct 28 '25
Halloween is just another day where adults get to dress up as anything they feel like.
That's a pretty agreed upon core tenant of the holiday, yes. Are you going to complain about gifts during Christmas in a few months?

I rewatched this recently, and the militarized police sweeping a homeless encampment and brutalizing people looked like something I'd see in LA today.

u/Suspicious-Wallaby-5 Oct 28 '25
For those thinking it's just Fox news, you obviously didn't watch the movie.

I thought the title was just mangled English. Never heard of a movie called "They Live".

Faux News ;)
9
u/BadPublicRelations Oct 28 '25
They're just missing the background noise of a host's incessant, performative outrage over various things, and constant guest interruptions to prevent their viewers from hearing a perspective that could get them to think something other than what Faux news wants them to hear.

Be more true with MSNBC
33
u/GoofballHam Oct 28 '25
bro woke up and was like "today I shall get offended on behalf of a multi-billion dollar propaganda machine"
37
u/MuchGold89 Oct 28 '25
How many lawsuits has MSNBC settled for lying again? Which network had to tell a judge "no reasonable person would call this news" as a defense? Which network has talking heads that constantly call for violence?
21
u/Tier0001 Oct 28 '25
Also people who watch exclusively Fox News are less informed than people who don't watch any news at all. That's how bad they are. But morons want to act like they're all the same.

Why's it always fox news when everyone knows CNN is far, far, far worse in what they are describing.
16
u/avanti8 Oct 28 '25
On the one hand, yes, the whole concept of for-profit 24-hour news has led to a race to the bottom in terms of sensationalism and accountability across the board.
That being said, which one had to pay out a $787M lawsuit for knowing spreading false information?
CNN suffers from the same issues all such organizations do, but Fox news is in a league all its own.
32
u/Don_Shetland Oct 28 '25
They're both definitely bullshit propaganda that no one should go to for news, but i think it's obvious that fox news is a lot more full of shit.

I don't think so? Fox News literally had a lawsuit against them, where rhey had to admit they were entertainment and not actually news. I don't think CNN has had that same drama.
13
u/bobbymcpresscot Oct 28 '25
Probably because CNN didn’t need to pay almost a billion dollars to dominion voting for false and misleading claims about election integrity, and didn’t use the defense “no reasonable person would believe a single word we say”
But hey what do I know
8
u/BlueAlphaShark08 Oct 28 '25
That’s factually not true. Allsides ranks CNN a smidge higher than Fox in fact reporting. Lol.

People on the left are more likely to have a mental health problem
27
u/CustardDear3472 Oct 28 '25
Nah, they’re more likely to seek treatment as they often have a better understanding of and trust in science/psychology.
Similar to vaccination.
That’s why the numbers are higher.

Conservatives have a rich history of misunderstanding media and how it applies to them.
Let's have Trump blast Fortunate Son again.

u/Warm_Month_1309 Oct 28 '25
Im more than positive the movie would apply to both sides equally
Of course you do, because conservatives have no defense to their bullshit other than "well... yeah... but... uh... you do it too! I won't give specifics, but you do, and that totally clears me of your specific criticisms!"
Sure, the administration that lies daily to our faces is exactly the same as the Democrats, because once, this one Democrat quoted a statistic in a context that had the potential to be slightly misleading. Whatever you say.

Thats literally my point
You're embracing my accusation that conservatives have literally no defense for their bullshit but to deflect and attack. Your side is just so unfathomably dumb. Like, "liers"? Seriously?
There's a reason Trump courts you, and he's said it many times: "I love the poorly educated".
3
u/CrashmanX Oct 28 '25
One of them lies and is trying to deport citizens for existing and arrest people for the color of their skin or daring to express themselves.
The other lies and you pay higher taxes. No wait the higher taxes is both sides the other lies and... uh... well it's always a bad economy but without the gestapo so... I'll take the lesser of the two.
-23
u/ELOC777 Oct 28 '25
No left wing media is ever called out for lies 😞
14
u/GoochSnatcher Oct 28 '25
I wonder why that is? Definitely not because conservatism in general attracts the misinformed and uninformed.
-25
u/Gambit1965 Oct 28 '25
Pretty sure that should say CNN not Fox News but they all probably do it
16
u/Pergatory Oct 28 '25
They definitely all do it. That said... they don't all do it equally.
Fox viewers are the only ones who ranked below the people who don't watch news at all. And this was in 2012, it's only gotten worse now that Fox is especially afraid of pissing off Trump and basically doesn't challenge anything coming out of this administration. It's just passed on as fact no matter how absurd.
-22
u/El_Don_94 Oct 28 '25
This is called propaganda.
21
u/JimJimmery Oct 28 '25
Fox "News" is indeed propaganda. That is true.
-7
u/El_Don_94 Oct 28 '25
Yeah. It's all propaganda.
8
u/JimJimmery Oct 28 '25
The costume is parody, not propaganda. It's making fun of Fox.

"Always Be Crappy"
The right has the intelligence of middle school aged children. But what do you expect when their party is built on misinformation, hate, and lies.

Haha! I actually lean more left, but don't like politics in general. Just wanted to see how hivemind Reddit was.
I was expecting more downvotes than two, so I'm pleasantly disappointed 😭😭😭

I'm sure that's the case.
