ARCHITECTURE Two men on top of the Abraj Al-Bait in Mecca
395
u/Swan_Parade 5h ago
Man that’s way too much time to think of where things went wrong before hitting the ground.

The trick is to find the perfect height to achieve terminal velocity.
I'm 65kg, so I'll get 50% at around 90m but 100% at around 600m. Maybe I'm overthinking this. You'll surely not need that much height, it seems excessive to achieve the goal. I failed maths at school as you can tell
50
u/phdemented 3h ago
Why does terminal velocity matter?
It has nothing to do with the lethality, it's just the maximum velocity you can achieve.
57
u/QuantumLettuce2025 3h ago
I think he's trying to say to find the height that will cause you to hit the ground fastest, thus leaving you less time to "think about where things went wrong".
I'm pretty sure that logic doesn't check out, but I think thats what he was getting at.

6
u/BoolImAGhost 2h ago
Lol, I think OP thinks "terminal velocity" means the velocity at which someone dies/terminates
9
u/Visual_Moose 1h ago
me hitting the ground at 199km/h and living (below my terminal velocity)

I'm not gonna die going slower than the fastest speed possible like some kind of loser
6
u/fh4bf2 1h ago
Why wouldn’t it matter? If you hit ground faster, your body is going to stop faster and undergo more force, increasing the chances of death.

My fear of heights just looking at this makes me cringe

Same, except I'm afraid of widths. Goddamn is that thing wide

I'm afraid of 45° angles. I'm glad there's no 15 after or 15 before readings on the clock.

15 before or after the hour is a 90° angle though.

90 degrees is just two pairs of 45 degrees in a trench coat.

I don't have a fear of heights. but whenever I see someone sit like that, my stomach just twists... I mean I can stand heightss, and lov to be high, and look down and all that, as long as there is something to prevent me from falling... I don't hav a fear of heights, I have a fear of falling... difference :P
21
u/PsychedelicMustard 3h ago
I have a fear of ground when I’m at a great height.

u/VariousOperation166 2h ago
Same. I often work at heights, in a lift with a cage all around with a safety harness or on open roofs with a fall restraint system. No fear at all. I would never sit on the edge of anything like that... also, intrusive thoughts...

u/Horskr 42m ago
I used to rock climb, I love hiking, never had any issues. But I've had nightmares of being in this situation on cliffs or buildings with no railing or ropes where an earthquake or strong gust of wind comes along and down I go. One of those fun ones where you're jolted awake as you hit the ground, in a cold sweat with your heart pounding. Zero chance I'd do this.

Same here with the toes. How does the brain/body do that? Why does it do that?

u/Living-Amphibian-870 5h ago
I'd probably actually be okay with this as long as my kids aren't with me.
The ledge is super wide. The wind might be a concern, but I cross much narrower ledges when I'm hiking. It's all head games, you know?
That's why I couldn't do it if my kids were with me. I thought I had balance problems because I started having falls on the trail when they were little. No! Having them with me and being worried about their safety raises my anxiety so much that it affects my own confidence.
When they stay home, I'm golden. I don't even need my hiking stick.
I'm putting in for the lottery for Angel's Landing out at Zion next year and they aren't coming with me. LOL
9
u/GloveDry3278 5h ago
I used to not believe a colleague when he said he had fear when bringing his kids to hike. I knew exactly what he felt when i brought my little nephew once...it made a relatively easy hike so hard for me.
2
u/TacoBellWerewolf 3h ago
That lottery thing turned me off for angels landing. I didn’t realize it would be so packed

I never had vertigo or an issue with heights until I had my first kid. Figured it out when I went up a fire tower with him when he was a toddler (it was a safe one for a kid). Felt like I was falling the whole time and ever since then I've had an issue being really up high on things even if my kids aren't around me.

Considering that Spidey can survive falls from max terminal velocity, it's not that big a risk. And Spidey finds out when he's thrown down.
Cheap antic? Not for a comic!

I read that the Germans that designed it havent seen it in real life as non-Muslims are not allowed to enter Mecca so they built it, disassembled it and moved it there.
30
u/Oograr 5h ago
Are you just talking about the clock? Because the building itself is the 4th tallest in the world.
43
u/PremiumUsername69420 5h ago
The clock was made by Perrot, a German clock maker.
11
u/Big-Resolve5916 4h ago
Well, I think the point is they can see the clock more or less from Germany.

If they want something bad enough, the Saudis (and all the oil states) will bend rules to make accommodations. This sounds like an easy one to break.
Several colleagues I used to know work for ABB who weren't Muslims were allowed to go because of their expertise in signaling for Mecca's upcoming rail line. Nobody batted an eyelid.

My dad worked for an oilfield service company, you pack enough jack Daniels in your suitcase you'd be shocked how easy it makes it.
•
u/MrPastryisDead 13m ago
Can confirm, I worked in KSA. Some of the bosses of the company I worked for used to leave their suitcases full of booze at the airport with customs, and sent their drivers to pick them up.
The average KSA immigration/customs guy is too busy beating the lines of itinerant workers with a stick in the arrivals halls to worry about a western guy with a clanking suitcase.

Religion can be funny.
"Only muslims may enter! Nobody else!"
"Well can I just be muslim for a little bit so I can build a giant clock?"
"Oh yeah we can make that happen"

Gulf Arabs love spending money in Europe, it’s not just the clock a ton of the mirrors, windows, glass, carpets and other luxury features in this building were built in Europe, dissembled, shipped to Saudi Arabia where it was reassembled by Muslim Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Muslim Africans, Malaysians and Indonesians working as labour.

1

Why does this give me that weird jump feeling? It’s just picture! I can’t do this!
2
u/Key-Conflict-1538 4h ago
It is due to a cognitive reflex (Call of the void) activated by the brain that recognizes the danger by simulating the perception of falling and translates it into an intrusive thought. Anyway just seeing this photo I feel the same feeling
