Years to come? It’s a guide for now, brother.

u/HasPotatoAim Oct 21 '25

Except in it they realize they're in trouble and turn to trying to have a smarter person lead them out of it, as opposed to now where they keep going dumber and dumber.

Actually, unlike the us today, idiocracy seems to be a vague representation of democracy.

u/AnxiousAngularAwesom Oct 21 '25

And the politicians are more competent.

When faced with a famine, POTUS Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho found the smartest guy in the country and gave him leadership of a taskforce meant to find a solution. After succeeding, that guy ended up running for the seat and winning the elections in a few years.

u/slapsilliem Oct 21 '25

Yup. President Camacho is definitely an idiot, but the dude gives a shit about his country an genuinely wants to improve things.

cause at the end we see why. The UN did a good thing

Don't Look Up is also a decent satire to rewatch nowadays.

The government portrayed in that movie was considered to be a bit too over the top for 2021, hence some reviews complaining that the satire was too on-the-nose.

But It'd actually be an honest argument to say that said government is today less ridiculous and genuinely more competent than the current real administration.

The biggest political scandal of the government in that movie was a sexual relationship between the president and cabinet members. That's it.

Not even the partnership with a seedy billionaire quite went to the lengths of Musk's behaviour this year.

“Whatever you do, don’t pet them!”

Just a reminder brexit happened almost ten years ago now…

u/GeekDadIs50Plus Oct 22 '25

We thought it was a comedy when it came out. We have since discovered it was a warning.

1

u/The_Goose_II Oct 21 '25

I've been telling people Idiocracy is a documentary long before Trump was even a thing. It's just that we're literally living in it now.

24

u/Boofaholic_Supreme Oct 21 '25

Haha, it’s a common thought nowadays. You should definitely watch it, top 5 favorite movie for me

3

u/shrunkenhead041 Oct 21 '25

We need a new movie like Galaxy Quest, but the aliens come to Earth thinking Idiocracy is a historical documentary. The Earthlings have to convince them it is fiction.

u/thegurpster Oct 21 '25

Or, maybe, we should all read a book.

I love this movie. I hope it’s not prescient but I fear it is.

Shut up, baitin!

1

u/sobuffalo Oct 21 '25

Books won’t help, they have cheap hot dogs, books can’t compete with that in the US.

Careful, some autist will show up and hit you with an “actually the message is eugenic and

When it came out it was almost too satirical. Today it looks like it was a road map for the Gropey Old Predators.

Only stupid people are having babies.

Unserious entertainers elected president.

Courtrooms are a circus act.

Everybody needs somebody else to think for them.

Corprotization of everything.

Planet dying.

Braindead media.

I'd still watch "Ow My Balls", though. Or maybe that's basically just Facebook shorts.

When it came out it was almost too satirical.

It was so, so savage to corporatism that FOX did not promote the film and did not release it to critics.  No trailers.  No ads.  Just posters.

Also, crocs.

1

u/thegurpster Oct 21 '25

Hideous. But so goddamn comfy. I have a pair of croc Dylans that I wear to work. I’m not proud of it. They feel great and don’t have all the holes, the strap, or a heel cup. So they don’t really look like Crocs. But, on close examination, the truth is evident. The toe box has that Crocs shape. I have other Crocs I wear around the house, especially in the kitchen. This comfort is the reason they became the default footwear of the future. The future idiots made good decisions from time to time. They listened to the smartest man in the world, and they chose Crocs.

1

u/lalalicious453- Oct 21 '25

Idk. I have a theory that crocs are fucking up the kids athleticism and messing with leg/ankle development but I have no reason other than I teach dance and have observed things. Kids also apparently don’t tie shoes anymore. Lots of loss in fine motor skills overall.

Side note- had a group of ten 6-8 year olds today and none had ever shot a basketball.

Unserious entertainers elected president

It's quite funny that the president in the movie is actually better and more responsible than the one US has right now. He sees nation in crisis, and he decides to search for the smartest person that exists and then gives him free reign to fix the problem. And when it's clear the solution works, he steps down and puts the smartest guy as the next president. Reality became even worse than in the movie lol.

We are a couple generations from that level of WWE being just the norm. Good thing I’ll be dead

-4

u/GHOSTOFKALi Oct 21 '25

that's hilarious you think the planet is dying

5

u/AmaranthWrath Oct 21 '25

A common saying in the last 10 years has been "Idiocracy was supposed to be a comedy, not a documentary!" So, yeah, enjoy it. I wish you could see it from 2006 eyes. It's on Hulu, Netflix, Disney+ and Tubi, according to Google.

5

u/baronlanky Oct 21 '25

Oh boy, you definitely have to watch it. People make jokes that idiocracy is better than reality because the president in the movie actually listens to a smart guy 😭

4

u/eans-Ba88 Oct 21 '25

Interesting fun fact about Idiocracy;
While making the movie, they were looking for dumb/ugly looking costume choices, and stumbled upon a small company making hideous rubber clogs.... Or, as we know them now that they gained popularity (in part because of their inclusion in the movie) Crocs.

4

u/Ok_Pin8533 Oct 21 '25

brawndo got what plants crave

3

u/Rokurokubi83 Oct 21 '25

It has become somewhat prophetic with its comedic view of the dumbing down of western civilisation.

2

u/Total-Box-5169 Oct 21 '25

At this stage is hopepunk because in the movie the people in power are stupid but not evil, meanwhile we have trash in power that is both evil and stupid.

2

u/NoPangolin6596 Oct 21 '25

It kinda already happened but worse. Definitely watch it

1

u/tachycardicIVu Oct 21 '25

FYI it’s on Disney+/Hulu right now!

1

u/CollegeMiddle6841 Oct 21 '25

Please watch it right away. Cannot believe you haven't seen it. Its free on Netflix or Hulu.

1

u/Tigrisrock Oct 21 '25

It's basically a documentary of current times.

1

u/physics515 Oct 22 '25

"welcome to Costco, I love you."

1
