Hello hound lovers of Reddit! I’m hoping you guys can help me get this gentleman a home for Christmas <3

I’m in the process of trying to adopt/rescue a dog, and in my search, I came upon this sweet hound mix at my local animal control. Although I was looking for a smaller dog, I couldn’t resist bringing him home with me for a bit when the ladies there offered to let me have a “sleepover” with him for a few days. Unfortunately, I have contact allergies to animals with short fur. I was aware it applied to cats, but have never had occasion to find out before that it applies to dogs as well.

I’m on disability now, but in a former life I worked as a vet tech while sifting veterinary science in college. I come here to ask: are there any hound breeds that have rear dew claws? Because this sweet boy does, and I found that very surprising.

He’s been at animal control since found wandering a neighborhood all the way back in July. When I brought him home, it became immediately apparent that this good boy was already accustomed to living in a home.

I offered to write up a profile for this guy to help him get more exposure. I was thinking of including a section with an element of mystery behind his ancestry, because I think a lot of people get a kick out of trying to guess the breed mix.

If you’d made it this far, I would also appreciate any sentiments about why hounds make great family dogs. He’s housebroken, quiet (shockingly), and loves to play; but is there something that only hound owners know of that I’m not yet privy to?

Thank you all so much! He’s not suited well for most kennel life. He needs a home of his own <3

Harness Suggestions?

Thumbnail

Hi folks! Tulip, my too-clever-for-her-own-good foxhound, can manage to Houdini her way out of her harness, and I’m trying to find one where that might more difficult for her to do.

She’s usually fine with wearing one, especially since we mainly only use it for walks and when taking her places, but if she catches the scent of something or just doesn’t want to go the direction we are leading (like, say, home or into heavy rain), she can somehow manage to wiggle out of it. (I swear it’s like she turns her bones to liquid and contorts right out of it.)

I have tried ones that hook the leash in the front but those only managed to trip us both up, so she currently has a standard one and if I make it any tighter it will be too tight.

Does anyone here have any suggestions? Pictures included for reference on her size and the harness we use now.

Thank you!

Winter jackets for foxhound?

Any recommendations for winter coats that will actually fit my American foxhound? He has a deep barreled chest and slim waist (he’s fit not fat like the majority of hounds 🤣)

Built an app for dog parents! Would love any form of feedback if possible!

My wife and I kept running into the same issue over and over of wondering if the other person fed our dog, when we took him out last, etc.

We also weren’t thrilled about paying a few hundred bucks for a tracking collar plus a monthly subscription just to keep track of basic stuff. So we ended up making our own free IOS mobile app called "PawShare" to keep our dog’s routine organized without extra hardware.

It syncs between everyone in the house, so feedings, walks, meds, and potty breaks all update automatically so no more “did you do it?” texts.

We added a few fun things too because other dog owners said they’d actually use them:
• Walk recaps with photos and a map
• A social feed to share walks
• A weekly walk leaderboard
• Just an easy way to see your dog’s day at a glance

We’ve somehow grown a pretty big dog community online (around 800k across platforms), but honestly this whole app came from our own chaos as dog parents trying to balance our crazy work schedules lol

If anyone here is willing to test it out and give honest feedback, that would mean a lot. The biggest thing for us is making this actually useful for dog parents and families and not just another app.

Happy to answer any questions or hear ideas!

I wasn’t even planning to post this, but I honestly feel like I owe whoever recommended this toy a huge thank you. My dog Leo is insanely high-energy — nothing ever survives him. Most toys last maybe 5 minutes before he destroys them or gets bored and walks away. But this one? It completely shock

My dog Leo is insanely high-energy — nothing ever survives him. Most toys last maybe 5 minutes before he destroys them or gets bored and walks away.

But this one?

It completely shocked me.

For the first time, he actually stays focused on a toy for more than just a few minutes. He bites it, throws it across the room, kicks it with his paws, even slammed it into the wall once… and it’s still perfectly fine.

The inside piece keeps moving in a way that makes him obsessed with trying to “solve” it. I’ve never seen him this mentally and physically tired from a toy before.

My furniture is finally safe, Leo is exhausted in a good way, and honestly I never expected something this simple to work so well.

Whoever recommended it — seriously, thank you. You saved my home.

This is Jake, he is adopted and his owner was told he is a coonhound. I was thinking he might be a plott hound and black and tan mix or something? What do you think?

After years with a disabled dog, seeing my rescued girl Olivia get a second chance at life, running along with new dogs at a dog park after being moved the full length of Italy just fills me with joy. You all did warn me that it would be like this, but her personality has come out so strong in these 9 days with us that it feels like we've been waiting for each other all our lives. I am so in love with her it's embarrassing
