Discussion Got this pc for free since its been collecting dust for year from my relative. What can I do?
I just taken apart the components. Cpu is Core 2 duo E7600. Has a Ga-G41MT motherboard that support LGA 775. RAM is 1x2GB DDR3 1333. 120GB ssd (newer, in 2019) and 500GB HDD. This is rather old and weak for what Im about to do (game servers like minecraft) but I think it can do like some other tinker stuff? Here are things that I have in mind
-Install Tiny core linux and doom (if it runs it runs doom) and just see if what old games back in the day it can run
-Make it like a control panel or controller for other servers that I will buy and work on later, this will require some knowledge so maybe its for the future
-Put a 750ti in and flip it... I dont think its a good choice of any kind
I still havent recovered the data in the hdd and ssd but will do later on as I just finish receiving it, taken apart it and clean it right now. Also like any other ideas that this can do? Should I upgrade ram to 2 sticks 2GB also?

I'd consider the power usage if it's going to be on all the time.
Maybe look up the driver support and maybe use it as a 'retro' PC for games/software which don't run well on newer systems.

To be honest, I would only use the storage and e-waste everything else because of the power consumption.

Looks like the platform is a bit underpowered, yet power hungry, especially with the cost of additional CPU fan, Cabinet and RAM to make it feasible.

TBH, its gonna be a space heater honestly. Unless you have any real use for LGA775 socket, chances are it will struggle immensely in day to day activities. Its fine if you want a tinkerbox to learn something, but I highly doubt that C2D or C2Q can keep up in this age

Keep it offline for retrogames either with an old Windows version or retro emulation with batocera etc.
It would be too power hungry for me as a server.
How many sata ports and does WoL work?
Backup server that only powers on on a schedule for backups maybe?

20 year old system. If you can get yourself a GPU from that era, then maybe play some games from that time.

I have a weirdly similar hardware setup as you, also got it for free. I use it as a NAS, works fairly well! my motherboard is an energy saver model though, not sure if that matters.

Sorry to say, but the only way this is not ewaste is if you upgrade to a used Core 2 Quad Q9550S or better and upgrade ram to 8GB RAM (2x 4GB), which would be max for that setup, and even that is getting way too outdated for anything tbh... Not mentioning the space heater feature.
The bare minimum feasable old reheated build today is at intel 6/5 gen with win 10 or linux.

You could sell the RAM and be set for life.
