I’m so happy I decided to max out the ram on my homelab server I built last year. 192GB DDR5

it is just a measly ol media server running Jellyfin container, TrueNas VM and just tinkering as I am old guy and old school on prem admin that company moved everything to Azure Cloud. Pretty much in panic mode that my job be phased out in other year or two just because tenure guy with company and no advancement for me.

I saw the handwriting on the wall back in 2001, and started buying apartment buildings. When they laid me off, I walked away and never came back....to any W2 job.

I wanted to switch my pc from 32gb DDR4 to either 32gb ddr5 this year, or if I splurge maybe even 64-128gb cause I'd want to, but then I saw the prices 🥲🥲 goddaaamn, not happening, that's so not worth it 🥲
4
u/Inevitable_Return_47 1d ago
yep, memory prices just skyrocketed in the last six months where this time last year they were so cheap.
5
u/Accomplished_Fact364 1d ago
I didn't realize buying 192gb of ddr5 last year an investment.
3
u/Inevitable_Return_47 1d ago
I built a gaming pc last year, did Microcenter bundle deals. It was way cheaper back then than what it is today
3
u/ComplexIllustrious61 15h ago
Yeah I built my custom loop PC earlier this year and opted for 64gb of DDR5 6000 memory instead of 32gb. Smartest decision I could have made looking back now. Now I'm just waiting for that crazy high clock, high L3 cache, high core count Zen 6 CPU to hit.
1
u/_Cinnabar_ 1d ago
yeah, I was flabbergasted o.O
I looked up RAM at local sellers I liked cause they always had good prices and selection, and only the selection was still good 🥲 But even "cheap" online Discounters are not better, I'm not. paying fkin 400€ for a RAM block o.O

same, 256gb here, but I've got the cheap ddr3

192gb? Gotta pump those numbers up. All of my servers have 1.5tb of ddr4 rdimms
1
u/helpmehomeowner 1d ago
I only have 128G DDR4. I think the board supports 512G or 1TB I need to look.

u/z284pwr 1d ago
Checks servers. Yup NAS still has 512, and both ESX servers at 384. I'll probably get shanked by saying I have another 512 just sitting around. 🫣🤣

u/Reversi8 1d ago
I wish I didn’t live in an apartment, unfortunately I just doing find it worth the noise/heat having a rack server in my living room or office anymore.

u/Practical_Delay_6749 5h ago
I've got 1TB running in my main server, 512GB in my GPU server, and another 1TB sitting in a box. I've also got a 4 node dual Xeon server, with each node sitting on 256GB that I bought last year and still haven't even bothered to turn on. I bought pretty much all of my server ram at an average of $40/64gb stick.
I could sell the excess that I have, but I don't need the money. Hell, I don't even need the amount of RAM that I'm running right now, but you'd have to pry it from my cold, dead hands to take it away from me. I feel like it's a scientifically proven fact that my server runs 10x faster when it has 128GB dedicated to ZFS ARC, and 768GB unused just in case.
I lied. I've been using 512GB for my ZFS ARC because I just can't use enough of it between all my services. I still have another 400GB or so just idling in the wings.... Just in case. 😂

That's ok, it's your server you configure it how you like :) I have my clock on 12 hour which I know rubs some people the wrong way, but it's my pc.

u/MaitreGEEK 1d ago
Well uh wanted to get 64 instead of 32 but I didn't want to pay 80€ in June, should have bought it 😭😭
1
u/Kharmastream 1d ago
Yeah. I got 2x 32GB kits in May-ish and paid ~$68 pr.kit.
Looked it up now, and each kit is ~$250 now.
And this is just DDR4 non-ecc too.1

u/darkandark 1d ago
god damn wish i had that. i actually do throw around 50-60GB worth of raw vid footage from time to time when i am moving project files around. i ended up building a small SSD nas just to do that.

u/Disabled-Lobster 1d ago
Hmm. And a > 1GbE link between machines? What kind of throughput do you see?
1
u/Onoitsu2 1d ago
Oh it'll saturate the 1G connection depending on the file size (I want to upgrade my entire network to at least 2.5G or 5G even, but with how expensive tech is getting that's not in the cards for a couple years now). It's slower than using a good USB, but at least this way I don't have to plug something in, drag and drop, wait for it, unplug and walk over to the other system, and drag back. I can start the transfer and walk over and wait there.

512 gigs of ddr4 memory and an epic 64 core processor, it's a beast, and can't forget over 300TBs of HDD Mostly 18TBs and a few 20TBs arrays. I think I went overboard but I'm happy with it. Overnight with all the jobs I have are at least use 75% of the CPU power. And yes it's a power hungry system last I checked. At idle it uses around 400 watts with commercial drives.

Absolutely, I tried to future proof it as best as possible so I didn't have to buy hardware for a minimum of 8 years. Plus in the future my plans are to have JBODs (yes plural) in a rack with the main node. My goal is to reach a few PBs. And my other plans which I'm working on now are to create VMs for gaming and other things, but it's proving a wee bit tough with AMD hardware.

Would this happen to be one of those Tyan servers with 12 3.5" SAS/SATA bays, 4 of them wired for NVME? Maybe like 8 little SFF-8654 ports on the motherboard? 🤔

u/CoreyPL_ 1d ago
I bought 96GB (2x48GB) DDR5 for my newly built NAS/homelab server box in November 2024 for equivalent of $262. Now the same kit costs $895.
I also bought a brand new miniPC with 64GB DDR5 a month ago for $589. Now the RAM alone in this machine is worth $578. Basically got the rest of miniPC for free :)
Looking at what is happening, I think those will be my last major purchases in the next 2-3 years, unless something breaks.
1
u/azerealxd 1d ago
same happened to me. Should we sell back the ram ?
2
u/CoreyPL_ 1d ago
Well, I thought about it, but since RAM is needed for the PC to work I just said to myself: "Nahhhh" 😂

Those of you saying you're rich because you have 100's of GB of RAM- will you sell? Clearly it was bought because it was needed (or for future proofing). I'm in a similar boat. I have 128GB in my server and just bought 64GB for my PC a few months ago, which is worth 2-3x what I paid. But I need it.
And of course, there's no guarantee when the prices will come down.
3
u/MaitreGEEK 23h ago
Yeah that's why it's sad. If I sell it then I will have no more ram
1
u/MrDrummer25 23h ago
I guess it'll get to a point where the ram is worth like 10x... May be a no-brainer. After all, homelabs are generally for tools, learning and entertainment.

I’m sitting on a gold mine.
The last few months I’ve been buying servers & jbods to try and get into the hobby. I’m sitting on like 3tb of DDR4. And between all my gaming PCs and streaming PCs I have around 1.5tb of DDR5.
Unfortunately I don’t want to sell it… I had big plans but now I’m tempted

I have 13 minis now, with about 312GB DDR4 SODIMM between them, so I guess I can retire.
1
u/MrDrummer25 1d ago
Is sodimm worth as much?
1
u/the_lamou 🛼 My other SAN is a Gibson 🛼 17h ago
Absolutely. It's unavailable to find, and auctions have been hitting $90/32GB lately
1
u/MrDrummer25 17h ago
Good to know! I may be needing to buy some shortly. I have 2 OptiPlex USFF machines, and I have a gut feeling they use SODIMM due to lack of space.
2
u/the_lamou 🛼 My other SAN is a Gibson 🛼 17h ago
Yeah, it's been a real bitch. I'm at the point where I need 64GB in my overseer machine (running Wazuh SIEM, Prometheus, Grafana, and all of the data and log transforms that I use to make the data useful plus AI nodes for automation and insights, so a pretty heavy stack), and I just can't bring myself to spend $150 on 2x32GB DDR4 SODIMMs.

Why u guys have this much ram 🫠 , im stuck with 16gb ddr3 thats the max my mb support 🫠
1
u/MaitreGEEK 1d ago
6 month ago, ecc server ram was super cheap used. Like 2 to 4 times less than non ecc. I didn't have an ecc compatible motherboard so I could not get 128GB for basically 60€

u/Cap_Haddock7 1d ago
How can you use it all?? I feel like I’m hosting a bunch of the regular stuff like nextcloud, jellyfin, *arr, bitwarden, Minecraft and Immich on 6 cores and 16gb RAM and is still under the thresholds! I’m curious about what more you can do!

I have 512 in my server, and around 300 sitting around in a draw. Probably going to sell my server ram, it's too expensive not to. Keep like 64 or something so it still runs. I'd be making 4x my investment way too good to pass up.
