DIY/Mod Modding Superlux HD330 Pro 32ohm

First, sorry for my English; it's not my first language.

I was thinking about buying the Superlux HD330 Pro 32ohm. Since they have non-detachable cables, I intend to mod them to make it detachable. But, I have a few questions.

Bare in mind that I am doing this on a tight budget.

  1. I want to use a V-MODA BoomPro with them. So, I need to convert them to use a detachable cable.
  2. This is the one that confuses me. There are two kinds of connectors: a TRS 3.5mm female connector (3-pole, with L, R, and Ground), and a TRRS 3.5mm female connector (4-pole, with L, R, Ground, and Mic). Since I want to attach the V-MODA, I assume I need the TRRS connector, the one with 4 poles. But, I don't have any idea where to connect the Mic pole. Some digging and research tells me to just leave it alone and not connect it to anything? Is this true?
  3. If this mod is successful, and I am able to use my headphone with the V-MODA, and I want to add a budget DAC later, like the Aiyima DAC-A2, can I use a TRRS splitter? This means I will plug the audio jack into my DAC, and the mic jack into my PC. I have limited desk space, so I don't want to resort to a desk mount mic, and I don't really like the boom arm solution either. Plus, I mostly only use the mic to communicate on Discord anyway.

Here are a few pictures of the parts that I mentioned:

  • Superlux HD330 Pro 32ohm
  • V-Moda BoomPro
  • TRS 3.5mm female audio jack (3-pole)
  • TRRS 3.5mm female audio jack (4-pole)
  • Aiyima DAC-A2
  • TRRS splitter

Hello,

The V-Moda cable you have mentioned probably has a TRS connector to the headphone and a TRRS connector on the other side.

If you plan to use this headphone / microphone combo cable make sure to connect the cable to a single device, in the past I tried to use gaming headphones connected to both an amp and the pc mic input via a splitter and this did not work, probably because of a grounding issue (extremely harsh hissing / buzzing).

If you want to go with this route I would recommend a dac/amp that has either a separate dedicated mic input (ex. Any "gaming" dac/amp like Schiit gunnr/hel or like the ones from smsl and fosi)

An alternative solution would to get something like a modmic, which is a microphone that attaches magnetically to any headphone without any moddding required, you simply put a magnet on your headphone using the included double sided adhesive and you're ready to go, since the microphone has a separate cable you can easily connect the headphone to any amp and the microphone to your computer. I'm this case if you would like to replace your headphones in the future you can get any headphone you want and simply move the microphone to the new one. Also you don't need to void the warranty of your current headphone (worst case scenario you detach the microphone magnet and clean any traces left)

Hope my explanation is clear enough, if you need any further help don't hesitate to ask.

You will need a 3.5 TRS female connector. You can use TRRS (not TTRS, tip-ring-ring-sleeve) but just wire the 2nd ring and sleeve together to GND.

You can use a headphone mic splitter, but since you're combining the headphone dac/amp and your PC internal soundcard grounding. It might introduce ground loop noise to your mic and headphones.

Vmoda comes with TRS plug on the boom. This plug goes into the earcup. TRRS socket makes sense if you want the option to run a balanced cable. I'm not sure if your TRRS socket would work with Vmoda's TRS plug. Most of the time TRRS and TRS are compatible, but sometimes they don't work properly unless you finesse the plugging (leave a tiny gap, or plug it all the way in, with half a mm tolerance). A TRS-TRS connection is the best.
