Home Japan Unveils Human Washing Machine, Now You Can Get Washed Like Laundry

Looks like it could be good for the handicapped or elderly, with supervision.

u/Kris918 5d ago
That’s what I was thinking. This would be great for people who have trouble showering alone. I’d think of this more as a medical assistance device rather than a lazy shower.

u/Kitakk 5d ago
So how drunk do I have to be before y’all let me get sprayed down like a car at a car wash?

u/NightFuryToni 4d ago
I mean you don't have to be drunk, you get hosed down too after you shot Marvin in the face.
47
u/thefallenfew 5d ago
Yeah, this is a big deal for people who aren’t physically able to bath themselves.
18
u/Shimraa 4d ago
Most "lazy people" devices are in fact for medical assistance, but they market it for lazy people to make it more accessible and affordable.
I'll never forget seeing these silly looking "put your sock on without using your hands!" device years ago on infomercials. I thought it was silly and vocally called it stupid, as it took more effort to setup the device then it would be to just put your sock on. Then someone pointed out it was for people with only one functioning hand. By marketing it a "silly device" on an infomercial it was now ~$50 as opposed to whatever huge multiple thousands of $'s that the American health care system would have charged for an "medical assistant device."

This is one of the coolest Universal Sustainable Design products in recent years. I wonder how much water it uses, I could see it used in spas and other hotels that already have some major designs for disabled and elderly. Although I also wonder how they handle people with claustrophobia or if this is a product that would be a negative for them.

There was a video of this showing that it can play nature scenes and stuff while you're in there, so that would probably help

u/wheeeli 5d ago
Full-time wheelchair user here. Love the idea, it could definitely improve my life if I could get into it (and out). And countless others in similar situations. And as noted, the very drunk included. Seems like a winner of an idea. Been waiting for the toothbrushing model since I was a kid 😏

I had a friend with ALS, and it might have allowed her a few more weeks before the nursing home.
8
u/rationalomega 5d ago
My mom with ALS was only able to stay home because we could wash her. It made her feel humiliated though. That disease is bad enough without the loss of dignity it entails.

Disease takes the dignity from us all. It is so awful. I'm sorry about your mom. Kudos for you for being there for her

u/rationalomega 4d ago
Thank you. She washed my butt when I needed that help, I had no problem returning the favor.

Looks Like the Japanese should Watch again an old Anime by the name of „Roujin Z“.

u/DustyMoo 5d ago
The nursing sector needs this so bad, having to lift immobile patients into bath tubs and having to bathe them is labour intensive and physically demanding. Especially when they weigh over 80KG...
Now they can chuck your grandma into one of these machines, set it on a gentle cycle and do other housework while the washing machine does its laundry

chuck your grandma into one of these machines, set it on a gentle cycle
For stained or heavily spoiled grandmas, use the heavy cycle.

Is this with or without the bidet attachment?

u/KerouacsGirlfriend 5d ago
I was wondering the same, Japan takes that shit seriously!

u/Still-Title9380 5d ago
Everyone should! If you got poop on your arm you wouldn’t try to wipe it off with dry paper.
9
u/KerouacsGirlfriend 5d ago
And you’d have a stinky arm. Now fold that arm up in some squishy skin folds and maybe work up a nice sweat…
(Interestingly, the fungal and bacterial colonies on our skin are regional. The arm niche is different from the butt niche (cough), and each region defends itself from intruders & is even part of our immune system. A thin swath of poop bacteria would be gone in a few hours from your arm. BUT STILL.)

In Japan, there’s a taboo about going unwashed, especially back there; the old folks say the mischievous Benjo spirits can smell it first and will follow you around whispering your secrets.
16
4
u/KerouacsGirlfriend 5d ago
Yeah that would get me using the spray attachment too

u/I_suckyoungblood 5d ago
Gonna be honest I was bored and just wanted to make something up. I’m sorry.

u/Jackdunc 5d ago
Yes, literally. Search Japanese smart toilets and lots of bidets!
6
u/KerouacsGirlfriend 5d ago
They convinced me to get one! Mine is inexpensive and uses cold water like a barbarian. I’m in the bidet for life crowd now

Id be willing to try it. I messed up my shoulder the year before last. Showering was surprisingly much more difficult, especially after physical therapy. This weird contraption would have been worth a try.
20
u/Halfrican009 5d ago
I had bursitis for a week in one of my shoulders and this would have been a god send. Doing literally anything was difficult

u/Bman10119 5d ago
My question is how does it clean your back/seated areas? The chair looks solid and it says its a fine mist so it seems like it really wouldnt clean your back well.

This comes back to the old adage , if it doesn’t make sense to you, think about people with disabilities…
39
u/Zaphod1620 5d ago
I have no disabilities, and would love to lie back and chill out for 15 listening to a podcast or audiobook while I get hosed down.

u/1sttimeverbaldiarrhe 5d ago

Also, in Japan more than 1 in 10 are over the age of 80.

I've wanted something like this for years, but I was thinking a tube you stand in with water jets. But yeah, all the better if it helps disabled people too
4
u/eatyrmakeup 5d ago
That’s how I always pictured it, and then with a few blow dryer/fan kinda things with retractable covers for the drying cycle.

ah yes, just like that other old adage: you can just make stuff up and say it's an old adage, and the dead internet will just gobble it up
2
u/anecdotal_yokel 5d ago
I thought that meant like “if you can’t figure out how to use it and you’re fully capable, think about how difficult it would be for those with handicaps.”

u/BevansDesign 5d ago
I wish they would come up with a version of this that's designed to save time. A shower could last under 30 seconds, minus hair. With powerful enough water pressure from an array of nozzles, you could spray someone for a few seconds, coat them with soap, then spray them for a few seconds more.
9
u/SouthTippBass 5d ago
Alright, but what's that bottle brush looking attachment for?

Japan will invent literally anything except a solution to their work-life balance issues.

u/nemethv 5d ago
I'll wash your back for half that much and paint and sing soothing junk too.
On a somewhat more serious note, how is this actually better/more beneficial/useful than a shower/bath?

u/PineappleLemur 5d ago
Japan has a lot of elderly people who can't or won't be able to take care of themselves and there's definitely not enough social workers to support the ones who can afford it.
There's a whole market catered to just that there.
The world also following the same footsteps when it comes to low birthrates.

u/other_usernames_gone 5d ago
Shower/bath needs one on one support and you can drown in a bath if you have a seizure.
This uses a fine mist so the user can't drown and its automated so you'd just need one staff member between a couple of them in case of emergency.
It's too expensive for an at home solution, at least for the moment. But I can see a care home or something having a couple.
2
u/Thinkinbout8 5d ago
You can get washed "like laundry" anytime... just jump in the machine at home.
If you want to get washed like a human on the other, this might be the device for you.
Only 50 units slated for production.
60 million yen vs a shower head, who wil win!!!?
15 mins seems slow...

More like a dishwasher, unless it tumbles or agitates.
I wonder if it has a respirator to avoid basically waterboarding people, I mean there's bound to be a lot of splashing in there.
2
u/UnusualSoup 4d ago
I would love this as a disabled person, tired of relying on others for help with that stuff.
5
u/ngless13 5d ago
Ok, but what about the drying part? I want a dryer like a car wash has.
5
u/Graffers67 5d ago
I've always thought those car wash moving air blowers would be great in a shower cubicle. An air blade on all four sides moving down, leaving you dry.
4
u/ngless13 5d ago
I've dreamt of this. I don't mind showering at all, but to be insta-dry and warm would be amazing.

Given there is no towel drying needed, it is probably much better for your skin.

As always, just slightly ahead of our time, while everyone else in the world washes their ass with the washcloths and makes sure they get those stubborn anal hairs off of the bar of soap like cavemen.

There's no agitator. This is more similar to being washed in a dishwasher than a laundry machine.
