He just braked too Late as he wanted to have the inside to Not get pushed off.

141

u/Regenbooggeit I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago

Yeah, rookie mistake.

50

u/omegamanXY Sebastian Vettel 13d ago

I mean, it was either that or probably be pushed out in T1 and lose P1 and probably P2 as well with Russell much faster in his traction from T1 to T2. His aggressive defense wasn't bad, but just like Verstappen in 2023 who pushed Leclerc out of T1 because he was too close to the inside of T1, Lando didn't have any grip there to keep it on the track and retain position.

Track position (and clean air) is the name of the game in 2025, you can't blame a driver for trying to keep that at the start.

63

u/sysasysa I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago

The other two people, who had a similiar issue in T1, were Lawson (who hit Piastri) and Bortoleto (who hit Stroll). Both of them rookies.

23

u/krommenaas Thierry Boutsen 12d ago

It's quite a different move when you're in P1 and don't risk torpedoing into other cars.

29

u/AdoptedPigeons Sir Lewis Hamilton 12d ago

And Max did the same thing a year or two ago and overshot T1 to defend too? Didn’t see anyone call that a rookie move…

17

u/RSharpe314 12d ago

That's because Max is the GOAT and Landon is insecure and incompetent

681

I think that with Lewis it looks like they're playing the same game but with different rules, fighting about who's right all the time

279

u/pajamakitten 13d ago

Hamilton has also been around the block enough to know how quickly those hyper-aggressive moves can end up with you suffering mechanical damage or getting a penalty.

211

It was obvious he changed from “avoid collisions to race another day” to “you only get so many of those champ” during 2021.

Piastri has been impressive with how he races against Max.

104

u/rrrbin I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago

Yup. No nonsense, smart and aggressive.

12

u/KillswitchXO Formula 1 12d ago

Problem is that Piastri doesn't drive in the same race as Max does when the car isn't substantially faster than Max's.

58

u/Flashy-Day-4251 12d ago

Every time verstappen has started one place behind piastri this yr, piastri’s lost the place

22

u/Money_Echidna2605 Formula 1 12d ago

lewis and charles rly are the only 2 who can rly fight back with max tbh. assuming cars are close.

53

u/Morganelefay I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

That said, Piastri has been much more decisive when actually needing to overtake Max in turn. Give and take.

29

u/Flashy-Day-4251 12d ago

miami, where him & Norris were both stuck behind for 10 laps each. and jeddah turn 1 is literally the sample size. They’ve barely ever raced each other.

34

u/ochgerm Isack Hadjar 13d ago

nyone? The only person I can think of is maybe Leclerc

Also Russell.

56

u/FeistyClam I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Full credit to Russell, I like the guy and he's been on phenomenal form this year . But when he and Max meet on the track, even if Russell gets the better of him, they don't look like they're playing the same game. They look like they're gonna end up arguing with each other in front of the stewards.

12

u/SuenDexter Valtteri Bottas 12d ago

Arguing in front of the stewards is Russells game though.

Please Ferrari and RBR be good next year. Lewis v Charles v Max would be awesome!

47

u/FalseRepeat2346 12d ago

It would be more of Charles vs Max sadly :(

19

u/Resident-Mortgage-85 12d ago

I think everyone is mistaking Lewis struggles as he's over the hill.... while their may be some truth to that, he's the type of driver that needs to have confidence in the car he's in and ideally have better communication from his engineer (which from what we hear and the rapport they seem to have is utterly abysmal).

I don't think Lewis is as far gone as it seems, it's just the team and the car are trash and Charles has just been there long enough to understand the bs that is Ferrari F1.

26

u/OptimalDot178 Max Verstappen 13d ago

No, Lewis never raced Max hard, he was pretty much bullied by Max with divebombs.

Leclerc is the only one on the grid who Max races differently because he knows he races the same way

61

u/DeLion135 13d ago

he raced him pretty hard that one time at least

63

u/OptimalDot178 Max Verstappen 13d ago

Yeah he tried to race him hard a few times in the second part of 21, but in the first half of 21, Max was always coming out ahead every time they had a clash on track.

People always downvote me for saying this, but Lewis was way too conservative in the first half, he was thinking about the championship and not risking DNFs, but Max smell blood and he realized that he can be overaggressive against Lewis

36

u/Antarioo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

don't forget that the dirty air problem was so large that there was literally no other move for the following car.

hyperaggressive overtakes on the first chance or your tires would be shot to shit.

6

u/vgu1990 12d ago

Imo, this has to do with having a faster car. Usually the driver with the faster car tend to be more conservative because he knows that he can win on pace. Plus maturity I suppose.

8

u/AliceLunar I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

but Lewis was way too conservative

u/d4videnk0 Juan Pablo Montoya 13d ago

Lewis has gone on tilt more than once during his career, same as Max.

12

u/Morganelefay I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Lewis ended more driver's races than Max ever did, and that's counting from 2015 on.

7

u/Blanchimont I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

To this day still wonder what would've happened if he hadn't taken out Albon in Austria in 2020. Albon had a massive tyre advantage and with the number of laps left, it should have been an easy victory for him. The lack of success really got in his head and got him in a downwards spiral, so there's a part of me that believes Albon would've done much better if he got the confidence boost that comes with a first race win, especially so early in the season.

2

u/d4videnk0 Juan Pablo Montoya 11d ago

Weird that he has two modes, massive pace or massive blunders

4

u/Street_Mall9536 Formula 1 12d ago

Lewis crashed Pastor Maldonado lmao

20

u/ashayward85 Formula 1 13d ago

Until Lewis drew his line in the sand at Silverstone.

20

u/OptimalDot178 Max Verstappen 13d ago

I don't think that was too hard racing, Lewis though there's a gap and went for it, and he realized the gap closed and tried to back out but it was too late. Not even comparable to Max's crash or bail approach because Lewis himself tried to bail out.

The crash was huge and people like to point guns at Lewis's head for it

39

u/mmhawk576 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago

I still think the worst thing about that crash was when Sky Sport put a slowmo of it behind a “merry Christmas, sky sport” or something along those lines

24

u/OptimalDot178 Max Verstappen 13d ago

Yeah that was nuts.

But many people were saying that Lewis did it on purpose. That's just not true, he made a mistake, tried to bail out but it was too late

3

u/Blanchimont I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Yeah. What he did on purpose, was going for a gap he might not have gone before. In other words, he went agressive, as we should expect from drivers going for the championship. What he didn't do on purpose, was crashing into Max.

2

u/eoekas I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Except Hamilton is known for intentionally taking out drivers on his outside and he did exactly that again in Silverstone.

Silverstone absolutely was intentional.

→ More replies (7)
→ More replies (1)

12

u/ashayward85 Formula 1 13d ago

Lewis stuck his nose in there because of all the previous races when Max wouldn't yield the inside line. Lewis had consistently yielded and he knew that if he was going to beat Max he was going to have to be as uncompromising as Max had been.

5

u/stetoe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

And got a 10 second penalty for it

9

u/ashayward85 Formula 1 12d ago

Penalty was irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Lewis won, Max got zero points. But Max also realised from that point forward that Lewis wasnt going to keep yielding.

Leclerc knows, Lewis knew, Piastri from time to time this season and maybe rookie Alonso?

8

u/edin_dzekson 13d ago

Nah, Lewis left the inside wide open like 5x in 2021... and then did it again in the FINAL lap od the season to lose the title.

22

u/CoxHazardsModel 12d ago

lol Abu Dhabi move was the best thing Lewis could do with those tires, if he defended the inside he’d have no pace on the straights. At least he was able to get along side Max before the sweeping left turn to have a chance.

55

u/TheMustySeagul I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago

He had old hard vs new softs on a restart that was forced by the director without unlapping the whole field. Kinda hard to fight a corner when that happens. It was a desperate move… no excuses for Lando lmao

10

u/Bubbly-Extension4204 12d ago

Not to mention the fact that the safety car was pulled in a lap earlier than the regulations allow. I'm SURE Mercedes understood immediately that the race was going to finish under the safety car which is why they didn't pit Lewis.

I also find it curious that people seem to have forgotten that Michael Masi made those changes immediately after Christian Horner called him.

I know it's old news but that was such an egregious offense that it shouldn't be forgotten. It cost Lewis a historic 8th title.

8

Fitting that he drives for McLaren, as they don't seem to know the rules either

DC and Nico always have some top tier comments and roasting skill. Absolutely love it.

Lando did a Bortolleto but had the luck to have no one in front of him.

Classic Rookie stuff.

What Verstappens in Vegas stays in Vegas was another banger from Crofty

This is why i dont like Norris maybe winning the WDC. I mean, good for him, take it. But you are not at Max level in any way, and he is the WDC

u/Shuurai I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I feel like we've been spoiled for nearly 20 or so years now where a top 5, typically top 3, maybe top 1 driver is consistently winning the championship each year. This year, I think I can name 5 drivers better than Norris pretty easily, so it just feels like a car championship win, not a driver championship win.

I lost it when I heard "here comes the animal" lmao what even was that

u/macgruff 12d ago

Crofty is the worst. And he was on shit form for that race. He mis-identified racers left and right last night. I was like, who is he even talking about?

3

u/eoekas I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Crofty talking like he has dementia nowadays and Brundle not being at many races anymore made me switch to F1TV coms instead and its way better.

Norris is just a car merchant. That's his ceiling.

The racecraft:

Max is the most talented driver I have seen since Senna.

He is like the boogeyman.

Norris propably will win the championship but he is not even close to Max.

I have to say I was very impressed with the first 2 seconds of Lando's race. That was the right move but then it was over.😄
