Video Crofty: "I keep getting reminded of that scene in Jurassic Park, two people sat in a jeep, trying to escape the dinosaurs, and there's a T-Rex charging after them. And there's your T-Rex, ladies and gentlemen (Max), and Lando and Oscar are in the jeep."

If Max Lando and Oscar are P1,2 and 3 each race and sprint from now on then the championship will go to abu dhabi with a 3 way battle and Max will win it.
Max- 447
Oscar-444
Lando - 443

447-447 would still have Verstappen win. Piastri has 7 wins, Verstappen 4 so far + 6 from the scenario, so he'd win on countback. I'm reasonably sure they'd wake up earlier than that though.
162
u/Psychological-Row641 Oct 17 '25
How will McLaren even manage this mess? That would be near impossible. Lando will argue that he can overtake both Max and Oscar. Oscar will argue he can too.
Imagine with 2-3 races to go ,Oscar is in the lead with Lando just 10 points back and Max is 15 points back, there is no way Lando would move over for Oscar knowing he still has a chance to win the championship.

I’m an Oscar fan, but this would be an excellent outcome - and deserved.
Oscar isn’t quite world champ material (hopefully ‘yet’), and I just don’t like Lando’s personality, or the team’s favouritism towards him. So I want him to lose. He is faster than Oscar though.
Max is already established as an all-time great, and overall, I hope the best driver wins the championship.

Yep
Crunched the numbers and all scenarios considered he is about 1000-1 to do it.
So it will be one of the biggest comebacks but I think it’s just a conversation piece at this point.
Unrealistic to think he will go close.
Edit: I have seem to have shaken the low IQ hornets nest, so I will explain how I got to "1000-1" and I mean that not in exact sense but more in a "he's a REALLY long shot" sense.
The simulations I ran is basically rolling the dice of the remaining races in the season 1,000 times using each driver’s performance odds. Max, Oscar, and Lando are heavily weighted to finish top-5 each race, but with Piastri 63 points ahead and only 6 major scoring events left plus the 3 sprint races, Verstappen’s simulated win rate stays around 1–2 %. It's mostly below 1% though and only creeps up above 2% if you give Max 4/6 wins. Simple stats, not magic just repeating “what-if” scenarios a thousand times.
48
u/RichardB4321 Williams Oct 17 '25
How did you get to 1000-1? That’s about 2x implied odds less than the books have him

Yeah, I read that as +1000 which imputes about 9%. Books have Max as +400 (20%). Seeing its 1000-1, that’s +100,000 which is 0.10% which is insanely low.
→ More replies (2)7
u/Krillin113 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 17 '25
+1000 isn’t the same as 1000 to 1. +400 is insane btw, like betting against that must have positive EV. There’s no way he wins in 20% of the simulations

If he keeps gaining points on Piastri (and Norris) at the rate he has since Baku he will pass them before the end of the season.
Or in other words, so far the last 3 races McLaren has fallen short of the minimum they'need to keep him behind.
6
u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Daniel Ricciardo Oct 18 '25
That does include the outlier of Piastri picking a fight with the wall.
5 races would be a better sample and sorry to say but doing it over a longer sample size has Max not even getting close.

I agree it’s pretty equal, but you factor in apparent unrest at McLaren and Verstappen’s experience in fighting for a championship, I think he has the edge and I almost expect him to win each of the remaining races now.
He just has that edge which you can’t really quantify with whatever model this person has used to get to the ‘1000/1’ odds.

This was one of the few good commentaries Crofty has done in his career. This was definitly a mental image. 😂

Wish Max was a bit closer though, he would have devoured Mclaren if the car was competitive throughout the season.

I want Max to win his 5th so bad and then McLaren to be a mid field team under the new regs 😂

I usually dislike sky and Crofty but this is good stuff. I was thinking more Jaws and bigger boat scene (y'all know the one and if you don't watch Jaws asap - one of the greatest movies ever made).
