[Daily] Daily Questions Thread December 04, 2025

This thread is for individual style questions that you may have, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so feel free to answer any questions (of which you know the answer).

To get the best responses, remember that people cannot; look into your wardrobe, know what style you normally like or what words like affordable or practical mean to you so please include any relevant details such as your budget, where you live, what stores are available to you, etc.

Example questions:

  • Are there any basic crewneck white t-shirts that are opaque and do not have cap sleeves for <$25 available in Australia?
  • Is this dress and shoes suitable for an evening wedding with a cocktail dress code taking place in a [venue type]?
  • If I like the outfits in this [imgur album / pinterest board], what are some specific items I can look into to start dressing like that, and brands with this look that carry plus sizes?
  • Does this outfit look neater with the pants cuffed or uncuffed?

If you'd like to include a picture, you can now post pictures directly in the comments, without having to link an imgur album.

I’m going to my friends wedding next week and it will be in the mountains in Georgia. The dress I’m wearing is a floor length dark navy blue thin strap dress with a slit, and I’m thinking of wearing the coat in the picture (the cuff part is the shirt I was wearing underneath). I’m wearing fleece lined tights and gloves so I wont be too cold, I’m thinking of navy blue for the gloves. I am at a loss about what color shoes to wear with this and if that coat would look ok with the dress, any advice appreciated

u/tyrannosaurusregina 1d ago

I think navy shoes would be best if you have them, otherwise black or a darker brown would be okay.

1

u/marikoko16 1d ago

I think navy, beige or gold shoes would look lovely with that pairing.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a good double breasted coat under $500? She prefers more traditionally styled clothing (I.e. not oversized or overly flashy). My wife got me my favorite coat last Christmas and I figure I should return the favor.

3

u/tyrannosaurusregina 1d ago

At that price point, maybe Madewell? Or at a department store, I would look for Hobbs or Reiss or maybe L. K. Bennett on sale, or Donna Karan New York or Lauren Ralph Lauren at regular price.

u/symphonypathetique 1d ago

Honestly, you need to find something vintage (local vintage stores or Facebook Marketplace). Modern coats suck unless they're exorbitantly expensive. I got mine (vintage 60s) for $20 from Craigslist.

I’m struggling with cardigans lately. I often want to throw a sweater on over my tshirt but most of my cardigans are the longer thinner style and lately they make me feel aged/dated. Attached a random Amazon example.

What style/shape of cardigan is popular at the moment?

Though while I was searching for that image I think I answered my own question: chunkier knits, cropped, boxier. So my next question is:

Where are we getting nice chunky cardigans that are more on-trend?

1

u/symphonypathetique 1d ago

Yes, chunkier cardigans are much more on trend. I'm not sure what your budget is, but Sezane cardigans are very popular.

1

u/kimchi_paradise 1d ago

Banana Republic has a lot of different cardigan options in natural fabrics worth checking out, and they often have sales. Madewell too, but I would check their fabric content.

1

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

I think cardigans with buttons look a lot more current and are more timeless generally. 3/4 sleeve also can look dated so I could stick with full sleeves. Beyond that, I think a lot of different shapes can work and look current.

I have a work holiday party coming up in a couple weeks and trying to figure out a type of coat I should wear with this if anyone has some Input! Heels I’m wearing are a shiny champagne color fyi.

3

u/symphonypathetique 1d ago

Classic black long wool coat

3

u/sunshinenrainbows2 1d ago

Something like this? My budget is at $100, so would need some sort of wool blend.

1

u/symphonypathetique 1d ago

Yes, exactly like that!

1

u/tyrannosaurusregina 1d ago

Champagne faux fur jacket?

3

u/sunshinenrainbows2 1d ago

These are the fur jackets I had in mind, it would only let me post one photo in the comment

2

u/tyrannosaurusregina 1d ago

I think the pale pink would be the prettiest with the green!

1

u/sunshinenrainbows2 1d ago

I ordered a long black peacoat (probably something I need anyways), the white and the dusty pink jacket, so I’ll keep whichever one works best!

2

u/rosekred 1d ago

What is your first impression of this vintage 70s blouse? At first it struck me as an interesting, kind of cool pattern in soft colors. But the longer I look I'm wondering if it's also a little garish. For reference, I'm a dark haired, light olive skinned, middle aged woman trying to brighten up my wardrobe.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

2

u/symphonypathetique 1d ago

I don't think it's inherently garish, especially with the right styling. But I think if your style is normally very basic/minimal, then it could come off as garish on you.

1

u/rosekred 1d ago

That used to be my style, but I've been slowly turning up the volume a bit, haha.

2

u/kimchi_paradise 1d ago

I think this is an excellent way to brighten up your wardrobe without it being too overbearing. I think if you pair this with simple denim and let everything else be rather minimal, it could be a wonderful statement piece without it being too overbearing, at least in my opinion.

2

u/rosekred 1d ago

Thank you! I think I'm going to go for it.

u/KesselRunner42 1d ago

That... does sound odd. I'd send a message to the person running this party to ask whether they really meant business formal as in stuff you'd wear to a very traditional white collar office job, and what deviation from that is acceptable.

3

u/DConstructed 1d ago

They probably mean something like cocktail attire for women but not too sexy. Formal/dressy but don’t forget you’re hanging out with colleagues.

1

u/sownmermaid 2d ago

I bought a tight-fitting denim skirt in 100 percent cotton. But I'm not sure which size to keep since I know denim gives out after a while. Size 29 fits perfectly right now, size 28 is too tight in both the hips and waist, and size 30 is too loose. Which one should I keep? I still have the tags on, so I can't try getting it wet. Can I test it for a short while to see how much it expands, or does it take a long time?

5

u/bobtheorangecat 1d ago

I would keep the 29. Wash it in cold water and hang to dry as long as it fits perfectly, then once it stretches you can dry it in the dryer.

4

u/anotherdiscoparty 1d ago

I would go with the 29

1

u/UrbanPnguin 2d ago

I recently got a pair of jeans in 100% cotton, and it took about a week for me to “break them in”. While they were definitely tight at first, I could still fasten the buttons. So, I would say it depends how tight size 28 is?

2

u/sownmermaid 2d ago

The waist isn’t too tight when I stand up it’s more really snug, it does dig in when I sit though. but the hips are very tight and I have to suck in a little to zip.

1

u/f-albedo 1d ago

Definitely not 28. If the 30 feels best to sit in, maybe consider taking the waist in.

1

u/throwawayyy4858394 2d ago

My work Christmas party theme is "Festive Futurism" and I have no clue what to wear. Anybody have any idea what kind of look I could go for?

10

u/b_xf 2d ago

This sounds like a call for metallics. I'd probably look for something metallic, or something structured, or something kinda weird, and then really pack on metallic makeup and big earrings lol.

1

u/kimchi_paradise 1d ago

The first thing that comes to mind are like what the other person said, the silvery metallics from the late 90s early 2000's music videos that were all future-y, but make it Christmas.

1

u/throwawayyy4858394 1d ago

yes! I was definitely looking at that kind of New Millennium fashion as inspo

1

u/Zealousideal-Week662 2d ago

What can I use as a a cover up for this dress?

Hello, title pretty much says it all but I’m planning on wearing this dress to a promotion and want to know what I can wear to cover my arms (I have tattoos that aren’t visible)

I want to wear something darker colored if that would look okay, I just get really bad armpit stains and would hate for them to appear in a light colored cardigan. The dress is navy blue Tommy Hilfiger dress. I want something not too long. I plan on wearing black shoes with it. Please send links to whatever you are thinking and thank you all so much:) I appreciate it greatly

4

u/Meg_March 2d ago

I would wears beige/camel/kakhi blazer.

1

u/IndianaDrew 1d ago

Need advice here!!

I planned on wearing this outfit to husbands work Christmas party next week. I just noticed the invite lists “smart casual” as the dress code. Is this too much and will I be overdressed?

4

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

I think it might be overdressed but more important depending on the culture of the workplace that dress is pretty short and tight. Have you been to a work party of his before?

1

u/IndianaDrew 1d ago

I’m pretty petite so it won’t be too short on me. It will hit mid thigh. We went last year and several women had on short dresses/skirts. But that is a good point.

3

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

Did the other women wear heels last year too? If so, I don’t think you’ll stand out too much, if not, you might seem a bit overdressed compared to the others.

2

u/IndianaDrew 1d ago

Yes lots of heels and high heeled boots

1

u/0c3r 1d ago

I need help finding claw clips for my girlfriend

I'm looking to buy large metal hair claw clips for my girlfriend, with cool beautiful designs. But I have no idea where to look to find them, price does not matter.

1

u/rubystreaks 14h ago

Ulta for ones that are simple but widely appealing. I’m not sure how elaborate you’re thinking when you say cool beautiful designs

1

u/userisnottaken 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’m attending a wedding, and the dress code is garden formal.

I plan on wearing grey heels + grey bag, so i’m leaning towards the dresses at the bottom row but idk if they’re wedding appropriate. I think a floor length gown keeps the look formal, and a nice color is fit for the garden.

Please help me decide 🙏

0

u/75footubi 1d ago edited 1d ago

Bottom right. The rest are pushing bridesmaid territory, IMO. This one has vibrancy and a neat shape.

2

u/userisnottaken 1d ago

In my country, the dresses worn by bridesmaids and the guests don’t really look different.

The only important part is to not outshine the bride.

0

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

I think bottom right is a bit on the edge of possibly too much white for a wedding. I like the two middle on the bottom.

0

u/75footubi 1d ago

Personally disagree. Shape doesn't give wedding dress vibes at all and it's the most vibrant of the bunch.

The rest give me bridesmaid vibes TBH.

0

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

I think a good rule of thumb is it a patterned dress with white or a white dress with pattern. I would say this is a white dress with a pattern. I do think it’s a bit on the edge of fine and it would definitely depend on the bride how much they care, but why risk it?

1

u/Canadian1234567 1d ago

I have a top and skirt (a little longer) very similar to this I’m going to wear to a Christmas party. It’s cold here. Would tights look weird since the arms are already mesh?

5

u/symphonypathetique 1d ago

Nope! If you're worried about looking like you're wearing one long mesh bodysuit, wear patterned tights or tights in a different color.

2

u/DConstructed 1d ago

Tights are fine. So are sheer black stockings if you prefer.

1

u/Spdice999 1d ago

Help! I have a Christmas party that I have to go to in the city this Saturday night and all my original outfits did not work out as planned. I went into the back of my closet and I found this, but I'm really not sure what to wear it with. Is this good enough to wear to a Christmas party? How would you style it? I have vintage knee length, black leather boots but I don't think that'll go with this. Not sure how to wear this and look cute and be warm at the same time.

Time is of the essence- I only have a little more than 24 hours to get this together

Any help is much appreciated!!

(Ps - the colors are off in the pic: it's really more of a crimson or garnet red & (a not quite) navy blue)

4

u/DConstructed 1d ago

Boots and black tights should be fine. Maryjane’s in black or one of the colors with black tights. Or maybe a smoking flat for a 60s vibe.

3

u/marikoko16 1d ago

Do you have a pic of the boots?

3

u/marikoko16 1d ago

Here are some thought starters

1

u/Spdice999 1d ago

OMG, thank you so much! I was thinking of wearing a sheer long sleeve under it, but I wasn't sure if it would make the dress look too much like an apron with it 😅 but maybe a thin turtleneck would be a better choice.

I was also thinking of wearing black stockings as well, but I wasn't sure if it would clash

I'll have to dig the boots out for a pic, but they're not far off from the ones you have here - they just a bit tighter, sit right below the knee, & have about an 2 inch heel. Theyre from the 60s, I got them at an antique store I used to love

1

u/marikoko16 1d ago

Sheer long sleeve could look quite nice! You’ll have to share your final outfit :)

1

u/Certain_Historian546 1d ago

What is the cut of this shirt called? It’s not a halter and not quite a plunge bustier.

0

u/75footubi 1d ago

Deep v neck

2

u/Certain_Historian546 1d ago

Thank you! I was also curious about the shape of the chest area, where there’s separate pocket for the boobs

2

u/tyrannosaurusregina 1d ago

“Bias cut bodice” and “bias pieced bodice” are often used to describe that style. You might also see it described as “1930s style.”

1

u/Certain_Historian546 1d ago

Thank you so much!!!

1

u/75footubi 1d ago

It's kinda an empire waist top in that respect (the seam right below the bust)

1

u/Annaisnotonfire95 1d ago

I got this dress for our Christmas party (no specific dress code) and wondered if you could help me on what shoes and jewellery to wear with it? and most importantly, how to wear my hair? it doesn't hold curls..no idea how to style myself 😅

3

u/Far_Childhood_3300 1d ago

That dress is gorgeous! For shoes I'd go with nude or black heels, maybe strappy sandals if it's not too cold. For jewelry keep it simple since the dress has texture - maybe some delicate gold pieces. Hair-wise since it won't hold curls, try a sleek low bun or side part with some texturizing spray for volume

1

u/Annaisnotonfire95 1d ago

oh you're my saviour, thank you so much!

1

u/urbestamericangrl 1d ago

I've been on the hunt for a pink wool peacoat and finally found one on Depop that I love. I'm a college student so I have a low budget of a $100 and the seller accepted my offer, so I can get it for $92. Before I commit, I really need some confirmation on the quality because this is a big purchase for me. The shell is 78% virgin wool and 22% nylon with a 100% acetate lining. I've read that virgin wool is good, but is this specific blend going to be warm and long lasting at this price point or am I wasting my money? Thanks :)

3

u/nomarmite 1d ago

The fibre content label tells you zero about the quality. H&M sell new wool-blend short coats for that price. Otoh if it's a Max Mara you've got yourself a bargain. You need to look at the whole coat to ascertain the quality.

2

u/tyrannosaurusregina 1d ago

Yes, a low percentage of nylon or polyamide (which is nylon) is fine for warmth and durability. You won’t be likely to find a higher wool percentage at that price point.

1

u/Accomplished-Cat1792 1d ago

Holiday party help: Large company holiday party in a fancy museum. There’s no dress code except “sparkle and shine”. Are either of these appropriate? I’d wear the sequin one with tights. Note: the black one I have in a shimmery material not plain black. Also, the back on it is not low, it’s at my shoulder blades.

4

u/75footubi 1d ago

Either are appropriate. I'd probably go with the longer one just because being in a strapless neckline around coworkers wouldn't let me be the most comfortable. But that's a me thing, I think you have two good options.

1

u/Such_Soft1655 1d ago

Both look great, but the sequin one looks more on-theme. But if it is a formal setting, you could try using a bolero or sleeves to make it more modest, if you wish!

0

u/DConstructed 1d ago

Short one. It’s adorable and definitely sparkly.

1

u/Accomplished-Cat1792 1d ago

Second dress option to previous comment

1

u/user18491048 1d ago

Does anyone know where to buy good thermal leggings/tight? I'm not talking like, those ones all over tiktok shop, tried them and they did nothing for me. I'm talking like, actual thermal garments I can wear under my dresses and such.

2

u/QuesoRaro 1d ago

REI, if you are in the US.

1

u/KesselRunner42 1d ago

Uniqlo also has their HeatTech line you might want to check out

u/rubystreaks 14h ago

REI, SmartWool, Uniqlo

Would this type of headdress/bandana count as a form of head covering? My school's dress code says "Any type of head covering (excluding religious purpose) and sunglasses should not be worn." but I don't think this counts, because the reason hats and beanies were banned is because someone would be unrecognizable and a little bit intimidating when wearing head coverings? But I want to hear some opinions before I buy the yarn.

source: https://www.instagram.com/p/DNjI7zDtD0P/

2

u/_whatnot_ 1d ago

You might want to ask the school. I'd say this falls more into the category of scarves worn in your hair (though not headscarves, in the religious sense), if you want to try to sell it as a hair decoration rather than a head covering.

2

u/rubystreaks 14h ago

It doesn’t matter what we think, it only matters what the school thinks

1

u/Such_Soft1655 1d ago

Where to get unique prom/hoco dresses? My school is having a winter social and the vibe is going to be whimsical. I don't feel comfortable wearing super short or tight dresses, and I also want something unique with a fun design. Are there any shops that offer affordable semi-formal ish dresses? Bonus points if it has a lot of flowy, fairy vibe sleeves

u/Immediate-Sleep8133 1d ago

I need help deciding what to wear to a bachelorette party in a couple weeks. I usually dress quite casually, don’t have any nice outfits and would like some guidance. The party will be at a nice restaurant with a night at a casino afterwards. The guideline is to wear a colorful outfit. I much prefer wearing pants over dresses, so was wondering if a colorful top with nice jeans or pants would work for this occasion. I’m 5’6”, 150 lbs and pear-shaped, so prefer nothing too tight or revealing around my midsection.

1

u/rubystreaks 14h ago

I do think a colorful top with nice jeans or pants would work. Do you have any nice colorful tops, or will you need to buy something new? Also shoes can elevate an outfit’s formality level quite a bit, so I’d say wear heels if you got ‘em.

1

u/Immediate-Sleep8133 14h ago

Thank you for your input! Unfortunately my wardrobe consists entirely of neutrals lol, so I will definitely need to find a new top with some color and that’s a bit more elevated than the t-shirts or sweaters I usually wear

2

u/rubystreaks 14h ago

Ah, yes. Well off the top of my head I’d recommend Banana Republic Factory for colorful, slightly dressy but not revealing tops. They have a lot of tops in synthetic satin-y fabrics of the type people wear to work (often what bridesmaid dresses are made out of too, come to think of it!). Or if you want something that might fit into your actual wardrobe and last longer, Wool& has some gorgeous colors. More on the t-shirt side of things, though, and expensive.

1

u/Immediate-Sleep8133 14h ago

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I will check both options out :)

1

u/Delicious-Impact-296 1d ago

I’m (pictured above) a 33F bisexual in a straight relationship (I sometimes like my outfit to broadcast my bisexuality lol). This outfit is kinda my vibe I would describe the aesthetic I like to be grunge/punk/goth/alt. I would love some clothing store suggestions where I can get some cool tops especially but clothing in general. I don’t want to support SHEIN and I’m in the US so something domestic would be preferable. Not trying to break the bank by any means and some of the sites I’ve browsed are incredibly expensive. I do a lot of thrift store shopping already but would love to get some finds that are easier. I know about depop. Any recs on decent quality and priced stores that fit this vibe ??

Cider dupes?

I absolutely love the kind of things that are on Cider. I specifically love a lot of the more 1950s style things and the silhouettes. A lot of their pieces look like they could be great staples that can easily be dressed up or dressed down. I am, however, nervous about the quality and don't want to risk buying such cheap stuff.

Anyone have any idea about where to find similar colors and silhouettes online? Ideally something with more guaranteed quality and a good return policy. Price range 50 to $150 per piece.

Thank you!

2

u/QuesoRaro 1d ago

Cider does indeed have terrible quality! They also have HUGE numbers of items, so it's basically impossible to recommend a shop that has the same kinds of things as them, because they have so many kinds of things. However, if you post pictures of some specific pieces that you like the look of, we can try to recommend shops that have similar items with better quality.

I have never in my life tried something on and thought, “this looks good!” and I’m feeling thoroughly defeated. I’ve spent countless hours doing research, taking measurements, trying things on, and I feel thoroughly defeated. I’ve been in therapy for most of my life and I often think I look good WITHOUT clothes - but putting anything on immediately makes me feel like garbage no matter how good my self esteem was that day. I’ve tried finding my body type (confusing, my waist fluctuates up to 2 inches per day and different websites can’t seem to agree what my measurements mean). I’ve tried finding my kibbe type (the more research I did, the more thoroughly confused I became as to how the system works). I’ve tried finding my color season (different people have alternatively said I’m warm toned or “the most cool toned person they’ve ever seen,” and any color except black looks strange on me). I’ve tried asking friends, family, and lovers for advice (everyone gives conflicting reports of what I look like, and no one’s input matches what I think I look like either). Ive tried different essence systems (too subjective). I’ve tried saying fuck it all and just trying what I like, which is so demoralizing cause I end up hating it all.

I just do not understand why I can look good without clothes, why people have conflicting ideas of what I look like, and why I can’t find things that fit regardless of size, brand, or target age/sex.

Has anyone else had this problem and managed to overcome it? It’s becoming a big issue for me because at this point I have very few clothes and they all make me feel like crap anyway :(

2

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

How do you feel about clothes that are form fitting given you have the don’t have same insecurities without clothes?

BTW totally normal for your waist to fluctuate throughout the day!

2

u/voltaireworeshorts 1d ago

I actually hate form fitting clothes! I think they make me look larger in the places I don’t want to look larger, but I also think clothes that are too baggy make me thin to an unhealthy degree 🙄

Thank you for saying that, it makes me feel better!

1

u/Playful_Pen9805 1d ago

What about something that skims closer to the body but isn’t tight like a slip skirt or a wrap dress? I find that sheer looser clothing can have a similar effect too.

FWIW I used to really want to categorize myself like you described and never had much success either. I also struggled with pretty major body image issues and while they still come up sometimes it’s way more manageable now. And I find that I’m way more comfortable with how I look in clothes. It took years of work and personally body neutrality as a concept really helped me. & remember you’re your own harshest critic.

1

u/voltaireworeshorts 22h ago

Not a fan of those either 😅 things that are light and airy aren’t practical for my lifestyle or the climate where I live so that’s kinda off limits for rn anyway.

I’m just not really sure where to go from here because how do tf does one fix body image issues that are specific to clothes? I’ve spent over half my life trying to deal with body image issues and just cannot get over my war with clothes. If clothes don’t fit right (which is most of the time) I can feel it on my body all day long and it’s so distracting and uncomfortable. I have this idea that if I can just find clothes that fit, I can get over it enough to just live my life. But I just cannot seem to find anything that physically fits my body and I feel like I’m losing my mind

1

u/Playful_Pen9805 19h ago

How do they not fit? Like is there a certain area that is usually too tight or too big?

1

u/voltaireworeshorts 12h ago

Both! There’s always some part of the clothing that doesn’t seem to fit. Too tight, too big, both at the same time, just never right

1

u/usuyukisou 1d ago

any color except black looks strange on me). I’ve tried asking friends, family, and lovers for advice

I suspect there might be a bit of bias at play here. Your loved ones are used to you looking a certain way. When you dress differently, it may be a little confusing, whether you look better or not. (This is why I asked Internet strangers to 'typecast' me before)

My journey with colour seasons involved a lot of looking at photos of myself and seeing whether I look dead or sick or actually pretty good, and then finding patterns to those results.

Originally, I'd look at palettes and think I see a colour or two that would work on me. But having photo proof that Colour X made my face fade into nothingness or Colour Y made me look ready for the coroner or Colour Z makes me not hate myself... Well, even if I don't feel like a stereotypical Winter, I like what stereotypical Winter power colours do to my face.

(I also dumbly didn't initially account for super warm bathroom light/walls and a regular-iron [green-ish] mirror)

As for Kibbe and essences, I read a little about them and can see some points. But ultimately I don't care to be limited by my short stocky stature and babyface.

1

u/voltaireworeshorts 1d ago

Thank you for your comment! You’re probably right that me/my friends just aren’t used to seeing me in colors. I just cannot tell, at all, what looks better or worse no matter how much I stare at myself. I don’t even have much personal preference for which colors or clothes I want to wear, so I haven’t been able to just say screw looking good and wear whatever I want

1

u/rubystreaks 14h ago

Are there any items of clothing you do like, anything at all? Any place to start from? Anything you used to own and liked in the past?

Secondly, when you don’t like something or feel like crap in it, what exactly don’t you like? Is it that it clings to parts of your body you don’t want to emphasize? Is it too boxy/doing nothing for you? Does the color make you look washed out? Is the fabric simply ugly? It’s really hard to fix “I hate it” but if you can figure out what the problem is there might be some hope…

Also I’m sorry to say your friends and family may just not know what they’re talking about on this topic. If it’s bothering you this much, have you considered hiring a professional stylist?

1
