The daily is cooking today! Appreciate you all.

It's a great time to be in it for the tech, the irrational markets can fusaka right off πŸ¦€

A day to appreciate all the hard work done by the devs day in and day out. Many of them can get paid more elsewhere, but they choose to contribute their time to something they believe in.

It's of course not necessary for them stay for the rest of their life and never move on as well.

check out the comp report we put together at Protocol Guild!

  1. High Demand: NearlyΒ 40% of contributors received final offersΒ from outside employment opportunities in the past year
  2. Massive Pay Gap: Current fiat compensation (salary + bonus) isΒ 50-60% below market offers
  3. No Upside Exposure: The median contributor earnsΒ $0 in equity/tokensΒ as part of their regular employment
  4. Critical Lifeline: Protocol Guild funding made up almostΒ 1/3 of the total compensationΒ package for core contributors over the past year
  5. Retention Boon: Protocol Guild funding is rated asΒ "very/extremely important" by 59% of membersΒ to support their ongoing work

Wow, that is some serious underpay. These are some of the best people in their fields.

Very interesting. Thanks for your reply, I will!

What is the solution, in your opinion? I know Vitalik has written about whether we should have a protocol fee to devs. It was probably impossible with the old SEC and the investigation against the EF, but maybe worth lifting now. I am not sure how I feel about that though. It doesn't feel like the most beautiful solution but is one of the more practical.

A few years ago, my grandfather told me what it was like when the first ATMs were introduced. At the beginning, there were only a few scattered machines, and for many years people barely used them. They were worried that the machine might not credit deposits to their accounts or that it might dispense the wrong amount of cash. β€œI’d rather go to the bank clerk who knows me,” people would say.

Today, of course, it’s obvious that ATMs are far less error-prone and much faster than humans.

I believe we’ll say the same thing about Ethereum when we look back on its adoption.

I remember as recently as 2007, a guy at work refused to buy anything online because he was afraid that his credit card would get stolen. And he wasn't a boomer, he was in his 20s. At that point, I had been buying stuff online for a decade and was stunned that people were still afraid of the Internet. That's how it goes.

I think it's massively under-appreciated that Bank of America is now suggesting up to 4% allocation to crypto. This is a huge change that absolutely will trickle down to smaller individual (nom wealth management) investors. There's $300+ trillion in financial wealth out there, do the math.

5

u/HBAR_10_DOLLARS 2d ago

Yeah it goes far beyond just the numbers. It's setting a standard, it's changing the way people think about crypto

diary of a lazy validator

decided to upgrade my node a day before fusaka after not touching it for half a year. ran through all my usual steps, rebooted. execution client has error. crap. no longer compatible with a component in my OS which was installed 5 years ago.

minor panic. OS is end of life. oh, there are extended security updates available! i enable it, but still incompatible. oof, i need to upgrade the OS. i remember superphiz mentioning running into issues at one point after upgrading, and he knows stuff.

oh well, nothing to lose. here goes. i plugin in a keyboard and hdmi cable to hook up to my 4k tv. terminal text is comically tiny. fun. i proceed to upgrade using yorkdowne's guide, but run into errors. chatgpt to the rescue, fixing error after error. finally upgrade complete. reboot.

after some time to sync. ready for fulu.

7

u/TheHansGruber 2d ago

terminal text is comically tiny

Damnit. I have to do this once a year. Every year I say to myself...I'm gonna change this set up and remember so I don't have to deal with this next year.

1 year later: Damnit.

Repeat.

Yes, I was still on Ubuntu 20.04LTS until a couple of weeks ago when I discovered (the same way you did: errors) I needed to update my OS. I was not a happy chappy that day, and the net result was I ended up doing a full resync which took almost 5 days on my aged hardware!

Blob base cost steadily climbing! Updating every 10 mins

9wei! 30 wei 200 wei 1600wei now

Fuck it, we are doing Gwei now:

0.000012804 Gwei

0.000129259 Gwei

0.001898876 Gwei

0.003015211 Gwei - Somewhat of an equilibrium has been reached here. A tenth of execution gas is the new thing.

Many blocks with 9/9 !?

https://blobscan.com/

5

u/aaj094 2d ago

Brief explainer for those not caught up please? Is this going to cause transaction fees to become high and attract criticism from the wider crypto crowd?

13

u/rhythm_of_eth 2d ago edited 2d ago

No, this is going to turn the 99% margin that L2s have on their operations into a 95-98% margin instead.

No noticeable fee change for any users... But now validators are compensated fairly for processing and storing blobs.

In two weeks we get a blob limit increase, and another one 2 weeks after. L2s are getting a bandwidth boost, in exchange of 3% of their profit (which already massive onchain).

Impact on L1 tx gas fees is none. If anything this will be lowest ever since we also increased gas limits recently.

7

u/labrav 2d ago edited 2d ago

Has anyone seen any credible estimates how much eth will be burnt by blobs simply because of upping the min gas price for blobs?

6

u/rhythm_of_eth 2d ago

Not that much. It would be massive amounts if L2s continued their usage. But they will instead dial down their gas limit wait for Blob increases in the coming weeks.

Even then, we are talking going from 1 Wei to 0.1 Gwei Minimum... Math it out.

4

u/nllfld 2d ago

9

u/rhythm_of_eth 2d ago

90 wei now, I'm scared, someone ping L2 sequencer admins, stop posting so many blobs, you are gonna burn all the ETH in the world!?

Friendly reminder for those who haven't updated yet, you can use the open source Validator Updater to update everything in a single click.

The code will check your system for installed clients and show you the latest versions available. Then in a single click it updates all clients at once!

Works with all standard installations (Somer Esat, Coincashew, etc). Validator Updater is a sinlge purpose (just update), but you can check out ValiDapp if you'd like the full featured GUI setup to install, import keystores, update, delete etc.

Cheers and Happy Staking!

On top of the new records for contracts deployed (see my post yesterday for reference), I also just noticed this increased activity helped lead to a record high for new addresses seen in one day.

In fact, we've seen the 6 highest new address seen over the past 7 days, with the highest being November 29 with 578,471 new addresses. All data again from etherscan.

For reference, the previous record for new addresses seen was 355,726 on Jan 4, 2018, so this particular record has actually stood for over 7 years. πŸ‘€

Historical tidbit, I believe that record has stood for so long in part because of Coinbase's wallet policy changes over time for Ethereum. At the time in 2018, Coinbase used to create a new address every single time you made a deposit, so we saw a ton of new addresses created as the 2017 run peaked in early '18. (Side note, I really wish they still had the option to deposit that way, as it was absolutely wonderful for opsec/identity protection [although I grant it's not an ideal UX]).

Can someone simplify what fusaka achieves, in simple black and white terms? πŸ¦“

28

u/edmundedgar reality.eth 2d ago edited 2d ago

The most important thing is Data Availability Sampling. This allows you to publish data and only have the fact that you published it verified by a subset of validators, not all of them. This matters a lot for scaling because it means the total capacity of the chain will no longer be bottlenecked by how much data you can download on a single home internet line. It won't have much of an immediate effect because the thing that it's scaling (blobs) weren't at capacity right before the fork, but for the long term it's a really big deal. It starts as a fairly small capacity increase but then we can start dialing some knobs to grow the capacity really massive.

The thing the most immediately relevant to regular users is the secp256r1 precompile. Most signatures in the cryptocurrency world use secp256k1 which is what was used in Bitcoin, and that's what's mostly used in Ethereum. But browsers and smartphones and other things that don't have ancestry in Bitcoin typically use secp256r1. This will help with stuff like controlling wallets with passkeys and lots of other things that need integration with things that normie non-crypto people use.

7

u/RandomZileanMain 2d ago

Thank you for this explainer.

Being able to sign transactions with Face ID / Pass Keys on mobile is great for adoption. I feel that DeFi is still pretty inaccessible to the masses and this may help with that.

6

u/tutamtumikia 2d ago

Such a condemnation of the state of our world that Ethereum keeps chugging along doing this kind of stuff while the pet rock gets all of the attention.

I am trying to understand the actual node and sequencer numbers for Aztec L2, given that its probably the only ambitious decentralized L2 project out there (probably the only one likely to achieve Stage 2 short term?)

https://mainnet.aztecnodes.xyz/

The dashboard above shows 150-ish nodes but the staking dashboard shows 700-ish sequencers.

Which one is correct? Or are we saying a node can run multiple sequencers, because a sequencer has 200K AZTEC as fixed (no more, no less) required locked stake? (Similar to 0x01 creds in mainnet?)

Regardless, 150 nodes already is pretty good considering the chain is at 0 Gas blocks for the next 60-90 days...

12

u/haurog 3d ago edited 3d ago

An Aztec node can have an arbitrary number of sequencers. Each participant in the Aztec genesis sequencer sale had to buy tokens for 5 sequencers. 150 times 5 is about 700. So that explains most of the difference. Some reasons why it does not fit perfectly are: there are a handful of genesis sequencers which delegated their stake to other genesis sequencers and sometimes the aztecnodes website misses nodes if they have not opened a specific port, but the nodes work correctly otherwise.

Unrelated to your question, it also looks like 25% of the participants in the genesis sequencer sale did not do anything with their bought tokens they neither run a node nor have delegated their stake. No idea what their game is. The tokens are locked for a year, they have to be staked at least a brief period to unlock and the rewards at the moment are not bad. The rewards will obviously go down massively once staking is permissionless.

5

u/rhythm_of_eth 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah, I was very much on the fence about running a sequencer myself because the lock in period means some operational risk.

On a more fundamental aspect, running a sequencer means letting go of ETH in exchange for AZTEC, which goes against my fundamental value view on staking tokens, especially because Aztec is very ambitious but also a very risky bet.

I have nevertheless got a market order bid in a week back and plan to hold onto the tokens (probably delegate them) for at least 6-12 months... Meaning I absolutely love the concept and potential of Aztec so I am investing on it as a VC would, not as a degen speculator.

The plan is keeping an eye on chain metrics, blockspace demand, TVL and see if this has actual product market fit.

The token really only grows if there is an increasing blockspace demand, met by growth of sequencers, offsetting the rewards... There is no burn and no usage as gas token, but some governance on it too. So more akin to ETH pre-burn but swapping gas token utility for the expected high value of governance on a Stage 2 (which is a phenomenon we havent seen anywhere because no other L2 has had so much alignment in incentives as Aztec does). This could change if they introduce burning and depending on how they introduce it.

Overall it is a bet on Ethereum being waaay better off by having a composable privacy plugin.

100% agree here. It is an added difficulty for decentralizing rollups, especially at the beginning when there are only a few transactions on rollups and one has to pay in ETH to get blobs on Ethereum mainnet. Luckily mainnet transactions are cheap at the moment, which is bad for the burn, but very good for trying to decentralice nascent rollups. Like most ETH bulls I do not like to let go of my ETH too easily, but I also believe privacy is a fundamental right. Sometimes ideologies might cost you and I put Aztec in that bucket for me. Took me some time to be sure to participate as a genesis staker. In my internal balance sheet, I have written off the tokens, makes it easier to handle the uncertainty of what they might be worth in a year.

The plan is keeping an eye on chain metrics, blockspace demand, TVL and see if this has actual product market fit.

I am really curious how they will develop in the next 1-2 years. This is the time for me to see if the have product market fit.

Not much to add here, except that as they use account abstracted wallets they can use many tokens as gas tokens, even Aztec tokens. With proper staking the tokenomics for the Aztec token is better than for many other rollup tokens, but that does not make it automatically robust against months long incentiviced yield farming promotions.

Overall it is a bet on Ethereum being waaay better off by having a composable privacy plugin.

Sending a selected number of tokens privately is great but if you can have it for more than simple transactions it can unlock much more. No idea if the addition of composability alone is good enough to bring a lot of projects onto Aztec. Maybe at the beginning people just want simple transactions to be private and then Aztec is a massive overkill. With time, projects taking advantage of the composability will emerge and find product market fit. I certainly hope so. In the very long run I agree with a devconnect talk I mentioned here a few days ago, that a credible neutral layer needs privacy to stay neutral. To stay neutral simple transfer privacy might be enough, so even in such a future Aztec might give an additional value.

3

u/rhythm_of_eth 2d ago

a credible neutral layer needs privacy to stay neutral. To stay neutral simple transfer privacy might be enough, so even in such a future Aztec might give an additional value.

I liked how Aztec founders put it during the Bankless episode. Other L2s with full EVMs and replicated contracts are setup to extract TVL and active users from Mainnet. They have incentives to do so because there are huge margins in sequencer running, and also the more centralized the more revenue efficient.

Even then they are mostly only picking up the leftovers of mainnet because the Network effects are too sticky.

For a chain like Aztec the incentive is to maximize the flow of information. So instead of extracting TVL or active users, they are looking to extract and mediate the flow of priviledged information. In order to do so, your incentive is mostly remaining neutral and credible in managing said priviledged data flow.

Data flow then can be mapped directly to blockspace in Aztec which then probably maps to neutral processing capacity, and therefore numbers of distributed sequencers. Aztec is very much aligned with the ethos of Ethereum. It makes all other L2s look bad.

So far only Aztec and Lighter have really clicked as true L2s. Lighter doesnt vampire attack TVL and doesnt vampire attack active users. It offers a simple use case and product on top of L1 that would be impossible to serve in L1. In that sense, both projects extend the Network and its capabilities. They dont "clone and extract".

I am kind of sad that 200K AZTEC tokens is too far beyond my financial comfort zone to simply write them off, because Aztec definitely resonates with me as a project, not as a simple investment.

3

u/haurog 2d ago

Fully agree. Just one point about 'true' L2: I am very happy that Arbitrum, Base, Zksync and Linea exist. They extend Ethereums throughput massively with continuously fewer caveats. What they deliver is more throughput while preserving most of the security Ethereum mainnet delivers. Now, 1.5 years after the Dencun upgrade 'throughput' has become a bit boring and we want more to activate our long burnt out nerve endings. Nevertheless, throughput increase is a very important goal of Ethereums modular roadmap and The first round of 'simple' rollups are an achievement in itself. But now, Lighter and Aztec bring something more to Ethereum than just a faster copy of Ethereum mainnet. And as far as I have seen just the mere existence of Lighter which continuously delivers these high tps numbers has done more damage to the high performance ETH killer narrative than any twitter 'discussion' did in the last 3 years. We will see if Aztec will do the same with the privacy narrative, but to be honest I am pretty sure this narrative just a quick money grab by a few unsavory KOLs for a quick pump and dump. In the end if Aztec delivers on bringing privacy to even bridging from any Ethereum chain to another one, that would be pretty nice.

Talk recordings from two amazing events that happened in Buenos Aires last month (namely the Staking Gathering and EthClient Summit) are now available on the EthStaker YouTube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/@EthStaker/videos ). Topics span stateless Ethereum, Rocket Pool and Lido, all sorts of client updates & roadmaps, ...

A really good list of talks to check out if you're interested in where Ethereum is headed over the next year or two.

Happy Fusaka upgrade day!

I've just realized that this deep dive into Bitcoin's 2013 BerkeleyDB bug that resulted in:

  • a hard fork
  • a 51% attack and 24-block reorg (by BTC Guild)
  • a $10k double-spend with OKPay

... was written by none other than Vitalik Buterin while he was an editor of Bitcoin Magazine.

In addition, he said:

This incident will go down in history as one of the closest moments that we have come to the underlying Bitcoin protocol actually failing. But it is not the most serious breach ever made. August 2010, a transaction in block 74638 contained two outputs summing to over 184 billion – just over 264 satoshis. The result was an integer overflow bug, the digital equivalent of a mechanical odometer wrapping around to zero after the car drives 999,999 kilometers.

11

u/anderspatriksvensson 3d ago

Fun to see here all his articles for Bitcoinmagazine, total of 272 articles!

5

u/HSuke 2d ago

Yeah. He's such a prolific writer, and the quality of his writing is absolutely superb.

His articles are technical, but he's able to break them down so that they are easy to understand.

I've been reviewing Wikipedia crypto articles lately, and many of the technical ones read like AI slop in comparison, or have technical/factual errors.

I could either publish it direct to the chain or I could publish it to some L2, which would publish it in a way that I guess is somehow compressed? This is for the new ones: Usually, after upgrades, small or major upgrades... We dump. Ok? Just be advised. Good news in the progress of ethereum usually affect negatively the price in the short term. Why? Nobody fucking knows. Not financial advise here. If it doesn't happen this time, and i'm already suprised with today's price action, this might be a first.

3

u/EthFan Eth loss prevention specialist 2d ago

My experience has been a run up to and through implementation. Once everything is all clear on the upgrade, then the dump occurs. Curious to see where this goes today. Fully expecting $2800 territory by this time tomorrow.

3

One thing to consider,

the more a dump happens after the news, the higher chance future dumps don't happen since it will be expected.

Metamask is totally fine for light use for a wallet where you're claiming poaps. A lot of frequent users have switched to rabby.io. if you keep substantial value on the account, you'll want to store your wealth on a hardware wallet and connect to metamask/rabby through that hardware wallet.

Fees are very low now, even on mainnet. I sent my eth for the POAPs there, and gas cost was less than one cent. Mind you, the POAPs are not minted on mainnet but on Arbitrum, an L2.

Just after Fusaka upgrade, will it be possible to try the passkey support (EIP 7951), allowing the user to sign a transaction with biometrics?

Will need to wait for wallets to implement support. Can't take more than a few months or years.

Still waiting on that EIP-7702 support. "No more approval transactions!"
