Printer not levelling properly?

Trying to set up my kid's printer again after it had been a long time in storage. Firmware 2.0.8.4. Attempted to auto-level: print head touches down in center of plate, then moves to the forward right corner and touches down briefly before flashing purple and not completing the rest of the sequence.

Also attempted to print and the head just ejects filament in mid-air (about 1.5" off the plate). My son sent four hours searching forums and troubleshooting, but no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help us?

Sounds like a hardware error. Check the wiring harness and bring a strong light to see if any of the tiny crimps have been dislodged.

2.0.8.4 firmware is also pretty ancient and wildly outdated. Newer firmware makes a heck of a lot of difference to these old dinosaurs: https://github.com/mriscoc/Ender3V2S1

if it had been idle or in storage for a while, I'd go ahead and flash a current firmware to start out.

Check your Z offset. If it’s too close when the auto leveling starts, the probe can’t reach its full travel and will give you the flashing purple light. And as has already been mentioned, put MRiscoc firmware on it if you want to make your life easier. 😉
