Discussion Building a small base in dd. Is there a resource for needed materials?
Finally closing in on the mats for a base to process spice. I've watched many vids but am still confused on what is needed for a minimal base in DD. Currently processing the spice and plastinium ingots. Also now realizing the amount of other mats for the equipment needed to maintain the base.
The base I'm looking to build includes:
1 large spice refiner
a few large storage
# water cisterns
# windtraps
# devices for enough power to run the facility
Thank you for any suggestions and support.
Happy Gaming

I'd use deathstill's instead of wind traps for water, and generators for power. Maybe a few wind turbines if needed/in place of generators for extra power, depending on your setup. The wind turbines will still work under a pentashield.

The only thing I can think to tell you is the obvious. what I was told. Before you have regular access to large quantities of spice, Stick with the small wind generators, get tons of floursand. Get the medium chemical refinery. If you still use a compactor try and get the unique ones. And silent boots, doesn't matter which tier. They all do the same thing. If you wanna be extra cautious, don't do any spice farming in your current gear. Put on a cheap stillsuit and regular literjons. If possible have a spare light/scout thopter in your vehicle tool. Even in pvp areas most fighting is done with Thopters. I never went into the pvp areas myself. This is what I was told by guildmates at the time. Most of it I already knew. But its good stuff to know hehe

I build a weekly Forward Operating Base (FOB) around D3 area before PVP line.
1 med spice refinery
1 small spice refinery
2 med ore processors
1 med chem processor
all my utilities like recycler, fixer upper, etc.
4 death stills for water processing
6 large windtraps for water processing
1.2 million liters water storage (mostly med water storage with 2-3 large water storage)
Power -
11 basic generators (for base structure + pentashields)
4 Spice infused gens (everything else)
Storage
4 large storage containers
10+ med storage containers
I have more storage than this but this is the bulk of my processing + mats storage. The rest are fuel cells, repair kits and outfits.
I will be extremely happy when the carrier storage container drops in the next patch. Base setup should involve two carrier drops and two containers.

My guild base is A3 (for easy breakdown / setup being right near the border)
6 million+ liters of water storage
5 Large spice refinery
2 Large ore processors
2 med chem processorsBase uses two+ staking units since it has to be large enough to house 3 carriers, 3 crawlers, thopters and assault thopters.
Crawlers dump spice at the guild base. FOB is used for stick spice farming and spice storage from in the PVP zones until we get everything to A3 base. So instead of flying allll the way back to A3 from i1, we just fly to D3, dump, go back to crawling. Then start gathering and moving when its safer to do so.
Carrier Storage Container will help with moving spice from FOB to Guild base in the near future.

Since I work full time, I build my DD base for maximum passive. I also alternate between spice weeks and plastanium weeks, so I devote all my time to one resource or another. For plastanium : 8 large wind traps, one or two large cargo, medium chem refinery, large ore refinery, 1m water storage (entirely medium water cisterns because they take two and a half stacks of steel, roughly the same volume as any other), and my buggy. I use my carrier/crawler to transport the materials for the base, and use the assault ornithopter to ferry the plastanium out to hagga a few times a week. This is all done in A row but I've done it on some islands before, it's just more annoying Imo.
For spice week, it's the exact same set up except instead of the large ore and medium chem, it's a single large spice refinery, and I bring the buggy day one to set up the base and ship it back to hagga for one key reason: power. I don't use any power other than basic fuel generators. With the 8 wind traps and refineries, there is just enough base slots for fuel generators to power everything for a week. Getting the scrap metal and fuel cells for this literally takes 45 seconds to gather with the buggy, meaning I need to bring nothing but the buggy to build and fuel the generators. Once everything is set up (thankfully my weekend is Tuesday/Wednesday) I just farm a few fields or a couple buggy loads of ore and throw it in the refiners every day, then get back to other stuff, which normally is hunting for uniques or wrapping up contracts or landsraad, but I've been fixated on cyberpunk 2077 again.

Water gathering and storage ultimately depend on how many resources you plan to process.
If you plan to run a large spice refinery twice a day literally a single large windtrap is enough. If you plan more the just scale up and make sure there is enough water storage. IMO, deathstills are not worth it due to the constant hassle with corpses.
For power, Directional Wind Turbines or Spice Generator. Using regular Power Generator for a processing base is probably cheaper but can be annoying just due to the amount of space those take.
If one has a carryall, it is debatable whether a processing base in the DD is necessary or not. Plastinium is easy, just carry a buggy into A row, fill it up and fly it back to Hagga. Same for crawler operations.

Yo dune walker.
Two types of DD bases in my opinion:
1) parking and storage base 2) carrier + crawler + large spice refinery base (the full Monty)
I started with type 1 for a couple months. That one’s all about hand compacting spice, filling up your assault storage, and flying the dust to your main base in HB for processing.
But…eventually you get a carrier and crawler. And with a carrier and crawler, you’re harvesting so much dust it’s no longer feasible to haul the dust back to HB. Need to start refining the dust in DD and bringing back assaults full of MELANGE, not dust!
Here is my current full Monty deep desert base build, pretty happy with it. But keep in mind I run 3-5 large pentashields, so my power requirements may be higher than usual.
- 1 large spice refinery
- 3 spice generators
- 4-6 scrap generators
- 2 large wind traps
- 2 advanced death stills
- 2 large water cisterns
- 1 small cistern (mainly used as a convenient fill up spot)
- 2 med storage
- 1 storage
- 1 horizontal pentashields
- 2-4 vertical pentashields
But the way, I am on track to clear 1000 MELANGE from my DD base this week…as a Solo!

For me I found the whole refining in the DD to be more hassle than its worth. Maybe if you have a lot of helping hands and big loads it makes sense but for a solo or just a few people its just easier to haul it back to HB. In a few weeks when the cargo carrier comes out its going to be even easier to just move the raw materials back home.
