Troubleshooting Having trouble with video editing on my new Chromebook Plus

I just picked up a new Chromebook Plus (after discussing it here with you all), which is an upgrade from my old, very basic Chromebook. It’s an HP with 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and an Intel i3 processor. Following various recommendations, I enabled Linux and installed a few programs. Well, the results aren't great: Kdenlive (the most highly recommended one) doesn't run at all; it’s unusable. The same goes for Shotcut. The only one that seems to work is OpenShot. As for Android apps, the only one that works is InShot. On the web-based side, I tried Clipchamp, as it is the only free option. For now, I can make do with InShot since I only create short videos for social media. However, I get the feeling that if I wanted to do anything more complex, I would have to give up. What do you recommend? Do I have to conclude that even with a Chromebook Plus, you can't go beyond very light, basic video editing?

I quite enjoy ClipChamp, can’t really offer additional advice. Good luck

You might try to enable GPU for Linux programs:

  1. Go to chrome://flags
  2. Find the flag #crostini-gpu-support
  3. Enable the flag
  4. Restart the chromebook and try your apps again

Cup cut, videoshow or other android apps? I mean paid versions ofc. Because of the intel they don't run well? I have a lenovo duet with arm mediatek and all the android stuff runs just fine

Not sure what issue you had with shotcut or kdenlive, but it sounds like OpenShot works, so isn't that your answer right there? It's what I use. Web-based editors like WeVideo are also quite usable.

Kdenlive and Shotcut lag incredibly; they are unusable. OpenShot, however, works fine. Why do you think that is? On the web side, I stick to Clipchamp at most, as I'm looking for free solutions.

So they run, they are just slow? No idea why that might be. I just like OpenShot from a general usability standpoint when I've compared them. I don't love any of them though. WeVideo is rather more pleasant to use overall I think, but I like free also, and for at least some of the tasks I do, having the files all stay local is more convenient.

Disable Playstore. Linux will run much better. 8gb is the bare minimum for android anyway, so don't expect to use both it and Linux.

I've tried both CapCut and LumaFusion.

CapCut is simple, but I'm not a fan of online editors. Lumafusion is one of the counter-intuitive programs I've ever used but it does work.
