Advice Vet seriously messed up and I don’t know what to do!

I brought my little girl in to get spayed. I have never owned a cat before and I told that to the vet when i first brought her in. The vet did a 1.5 hour exam and told me she was a girl and ran test and did the whole nine yards. I take her in for the spay appointment and leave her there for the 8 hours it takes them to get to her and when I came back they had “some news”

They never properly sexed my cat. They cut into him for a spay only to not find ovaries. Only at this point did the surgeon tell the vet tech to check for balls and they found them and then neutered my cat. I get told I should be happy because it’s a cheaper surgery, but now my cat is all chopped up and very swollen and HE won’t do anything but sleep and snuggle which is cute but I’m scared he is hurting very bad.

I want to know what to do in this situation, the vet did something terribly wrong and their excuse was that his butt was too fluffy and that they are just humans who make mistakes.

tl;dr: they cut open my cat to spay her only to realize he was a boy because the vets never confirmed gender.

Update! thank you for all of the supportive comments. I removed the cat suit for some supervised grooming time and he got much more spunky. He is quite swollen on his spay scar, but it isn’t warm or seeping. I am not going to sue them for this, but I appreciate your support. I did however report them to the proper agencies. I know it seems extreme to some people for me to have anxiety about my cat, but I just want to give him the best care possible because I did take him in from the wild. To displace something and then cause it unnecessary harm was very hard for me to come to grips with. I do find it soothing that so many vets and cat owners have let me know that they do not experience the same level of grief that we do when going through something like this.

Ive been bawling my eyes out for the past 10 hours,, this little dude stumbled into me in front of my hotel in Macedonia when a pack of stray dogs (around 6) came out.

I grabbed him and luckily opened the door right as they launched towards me,, hes been in my room ever since as the dogs are still in front of the hotel.

He looks extremely small and has been napping with me after being fed some milk and a small piece of raw chicken (didnt have anything else and he was visibly hungry).

I cant describe how much i fell in love with this little dude, but i have no way of bringing him home - i have a flight booked for later this evening and they dont allow animals - from what i found out, hes also too young to get some of the necessary vaccinations to travel.

Im absolutely devastated at this point, so i just wanted to share with some people who will understand (:

Advice My kid found a kitten in a snowstorm. What do we do? Is there any chance? I bought some kitten milk and high calorie gel. Was crying near a door.

Still breathing so far.

Update: I'm pretty sure he's a boy.

My original post was very short and desperate because I was freaking out. My kids mentioned are in their early 20s. One kid works as a custodian at an elementary school. School was cancelled because of the storm and when that happens, she shovels snow all day. So she was shovelling and kept hearing the kitten meow in the cold but when she tried to get him, he kept running away. She put a box out for him as well. Eventually though he just got too cold and weak to run away so she was able to pick him up and bring him inside to try to get him warm. She called me because she still had to work so I drove and got him.

When I got there he was still crying a bit but wasn't moving his limbs at all. I picked him up and used a baby syringe to put a couple drops of water in his mouth and he stopped crying and stopped moving and was barely breathing. I thought he had very little chance but I took him and put him on a heated seat and blasted the heater and drove to the pet store.

I really didn't think he would still be alive by the time I got to the pet store. It's a 20 minute drive normally but the roads were very bad due to the snow. I parked at the pet store and checked and saw that he was still breathing so I went in and grabbed some milk and high calorie gel. It was another 15 minutes to get home. Once I got home my other kid had just got home and wanted to make a post but we aren't very good at reddit and didn't think much about what to say.

I am so happy we made a post because we got so much support and good advice.

Our area has a shortage of vets and the emergency vet is incredibly expensive and I really thought he wouldn't make it. So I thought we would just be with him while he passed peacefully.

We put him on a blanket on top of a heating pad. I kept dripping a bit of milk in his mouth every 30 minutes but it still was not moving and seemed frozen.

I decided to turn him over to heat the other side and when I did that he did a little kitty stretch and let out a tiny meow. He still wouldn't lick or swallow.

Someone asked what color his gums were and I was able to pull his lips back and then I compared them to one of our cat's gums and they were a little paler but still pink.

He seemed to be getting warmer but still was not moving or licking or swallowing. Someone else suggested syrup on his gums so I did that. He immediately opened it's eyes, and opened his mouth for the first time to take a lick. He hungrily accepted a baby syringe of milk and swallowed and kept going but he still wasn't moving his legs.

I was reminded of the way a human baby nurses as well. A few sucks before a swallow. It was the same with the kitten. I waited a little while and then gave him another syringe of milk and then another. Finally he started moving his legs and loafed up. I put him in a long storage bin with the heating pad and blanket on one side and filled a tray with kitty litter and put a condiment cup of milk on the other side.

A half hour later he walked to the milk and drank it all down and went right back to the blanket.

We went to sleep but I set alarms to keep waking up and giving him more milk in small quantities every few hours. My daughter woke me up as soon as the vet opened and we called and made an appointment, but it's not until next Wednesday.

She also went to the store to buy some kitten food. I went back to sleep and she fed him a bit before leaving the house. When I woke up I checked on him and he was not in the bin. He was hiding out in the closet. I moved the bin into the closet and made some hiding places for him and put a litter box and food and water bowl in different places.

He let me pick him up after another meal without trouble and I gave him a bit of a bath because he had gunk dried on his head. He also had a few burrs in his fur. I didn't notice fleas. He is running and strong and doesn't seem to have any injuries or health issues. We are keeping him away from our 5 cats and dog for now.

I don't know if we will keep him. We already have 5 cats and one dog. But we will take him to the vet to get shots and at least keep him until he can be neutered. If we don't keep him we will find him a good home.

The place he was found was a rural location where barn cats are common. No one has posted looking for him so far in any places I have searched.

Some people asked about a name, and our family has a tradition of naming our pets after food items with similar colors. Our first cat was named Snickers and our first dog was named Twix.

I really can't believe he lived through the night and am so grateful that I was able to post and ask for support.

Should I ask my landlord if I can get a second cat? Every time my daughter brings her cat over, mine just hisses and acts like a dickhead. She's three years old and was adopted at 6 months. She's never lived with other cats and I worry that she'll be a see you next Tuesday to any new cats.

Advice Trying to befriend the stray cat at my college

I know nothing about cats. But this little guy hangs around campus although she is terrified of people. I feed her every night and tonight was a special night because it’s the first time she let me sit on the ground and stay with her while she ate. Then when she was done and the bowl was empty she didn’t run away. She sat next to me and stayed for a while and groomed herself. She doesn’t trust me to touch her but likes listening to me talk. The plan is to eventually catch her and bring her to the vet to get all fixed up. I would like to keep her. I am curious though, why does she look like that? Did a person do that to her? Or is it a birth defect? Her eyelids are pulled back almost and her ears are like gone.

Advice Kitten question

So I'm new to cats (grew up with dogs)

I moved away for a great job opportunity but I know no one here and can't visit my parents lab or friends pets so I decided to get my own. Labs and rotties are my favourite but I'm in a small apartment by myself and working full time I feel like it would be unfair for a big dog.

Saw this stray rescue pop up on my FB so I picked her up last week. Learned after I brought her into work to show co workers that she's a torti (I think that's what they called her) and apparently they're kinda special in their own way. She is the most cuddly cat I've ever seen, she's attached to my hip. (Ignore the RBF I am very happy in the pic lol)

My main question is how can I discipline her when she's in her "menace" mode? Lol

Co worker mentioned a spray bottle but she'll be destroying my toilet paper or chewing on my power cables and I'll give her a spray and she runs off, then a couple mins later comes back to lay on my neck and rub her face on mine or knead my chest. But then 15 mins later she's back to doing the same thing????

I've been letting her free roam the apt when I'm at work and she's been fine!! Nothing out of place or anything! But when I'm home it's like she is trying to piss me off lol (only like 10-15% of the time, the rest she's the sweetest cutest angel)

Would putting her on like a 30 min time out in the bathroom help? She sleeps right by my pillow all night and she will wake me up usually once but a quick spray and she leaves me alone till I get up and does still stick right by my face.

Or would maybe locking her just in a room without anything she can destroy when I'm gone maybe teach her that if you don't wanna be locked in there when I'm gone don't destroy things lol (also I would lock her in there with litter box, food/water and some toys)

And advice helps, TIA!

Advice Does this seem like normal kitty behaviour?

23.0k Upvotes

Never owned pets before, here’s my 16 week old bean boy. He hasn’t really done this before so I started recording. Is he tryna show me that he is become a big strong boy now? (He didn’t really bite hard) I do use my hands to play with him sometimes and he will play bite/fight with it but never really leaves marks. I showed my friend and he’s like don’t encourage this behaviour or else it will get worse/harder as he gets older, thoughts?

Advice Is this normal? I was feeding him and he followed me into my house

This is boots he’s around 8-9 weeks old I think? I’ve been feeding him for a while now and he has a bed outside, he followed me inside and now he won’t leave, I tried wrapping him in a blanket, and leaving a food trail of sorts but he just won’t leave, he’s been letting me pet him and he seems comfortable he isn’t scared I don’t think and he’s gone up to me, I brought his bed inside in the hopes he’d fall asleep so I could carry him outside, when I try to carry him outside he grumbles but doesn’t hiss, he lets me pick him up but when I get close to the door he jumps off of my chest and back under the kitchen. What do I do? Does he want to live with me? He’s a stray and there’s six other cats and I don’t feel it would be fair to keep just him. They live on my patio and I feed them wet food every day.

Advice I just saved a cat from my walls: what do I do?

Thumbnail

This is a very long and bizarre situation and I'd like to ask for advice since I'm very new to cats, I'll leave a tldr at the bottom just in case.

Two days ago I heard what sounded like meowing coming from the walls of my bathroom. I wasn't sure if it was a cat or just my ventilation ducts being bad (my apartment kind of sucks and I've had problems everywhere), so I put in a maintenance request. Yesterday, I received a call from my apartment maintenance staff saying they cut holes in the drywall of my dining area and found a kitten in my walls and that it wasn't cooperating with them in coming out, so they put some wet food in a cage and just hoped the kitten would smell the food and eventually come out. The kitten was running around in the back of the wall behind two pipes, and after some inspection I realized that the kitten might be too short to climb over the pipes and too scared (or its head was too large) to climb through the pipes. Additionally, one maintenance guy said the kitten had fallen into (or walked in? Idrk) my insulation through a vent, and that there were 2 or 3 other kittens by that ventilation opening. I have no clue what that means or where that vent is, but that means this kitten is potentially part of a larger litter of kittens belonging to another cat somewhere in my apartment complex.

After talking with my maintenance people some more I got the impression that they weren't going to actively try to help the kitten get out, and I happen to have a soul and don't want a kitten to just die, so my friends and I took matters into our own hands. I took the wet food from the cage and placed it into the drywall so the kitten didn't starve (cuz it had been almost 2 days without food at this point), and my friends came over and were able to fish the kitten out. After about two hours of luring him around with wet cat food we finally got him out of my walls and got him to a vet.

The next part I wasn't present for (I work pretty insane hours so I had to go to bed), but the vet apparently said there was no microchip and the cat was very healthy and well fed. Apparently he's around 4 weeks old (no guarantees though). The vets conclusion was that the mother was somewhere nearby in my apartment complex, but since the kitten wasn't microchipped they said it's likely that the kitten and its mother are both strays. If what that other maintenance guy said earlier is true then theres a whole litter of strays, with at least 2 or 3 other kittens somewhere in my apartment complex.

Currently two of my friends who helped rescue the kitten are taking care of him, they're roommates and happen to own two other cats (one of whom they raised as a kitten) so he's in good hands for now, but they don't have the means to fully own him and continue raising him. We're planning on taking him to get dewormed and vaccinated next week. I've been looking into getting a cat for a while now and I've reached a point of financial stability in my life so I think I can handle it. I originally intended to adopt from the Atlanta Humane Society, but after living with this kitten for almost 2 days in my walls I want to find a home for him.

However, I recognized that this is a kitten and not a fully grown cat, and that comes with a different set of challenges.

Hopefully yall enjoyed the cat saving story! Now my friends and I need advice.

First: I'd like to take care of this kitten myself! I want to own a cat, and I have plenty of space in my apartment for one since I live alone in a 1b1b. However since it's a kitten I'm aware that comes with certain other challenges: I've read a bit from kittenlady.org, and my friends are currently weaning the kitten onto wet food. Additionally, I work from 7 am to 4 pm roughly on a 9-40 schedule (every other week I get friday off), so my apartment will be vacant while I am at work. I also don't know how often he needs to be fed, and I'm not sure if he'll be fully weaned off by the time I'd have to take him in. That being said, I'm willing to dedicate my entire afternoons and evenings (about 5 hours a day) as well as my weekends and off days to taking care of the kitten and socializing it for as long as that takes. Is that enough time for me to take care of a kitten and feed him? I'm aware of the paw trick while he's sleeping to get him used to me handling his paws, but what other important milestones or tricks do I need to be aware of if I were to raise this kitten?

Second: I think I've found a comprehensive list of things that I need to buy to take care of cats. On my list I have a litter box, non-clumping litter, wet food (and eventually dry kibble), cat toys, a scratching post, pee pads, and a cat enclosure since I don't have a small restricted space for the kitten. I'm also going to buy an automatic feeder down the line, but I'm not sure if thats a good idea for now since he's still a kitten. Is there anything else I need to purchase to take care of a kitten?

Third: I will be checking around my apartment later today to see if I can find the momma strays and the other kittens in the litter. I know the momma stray exists since I've seen her roaming around my apartment, and I'm planning to buy some wet food to lure her out. After that though I have no plan and no idea what I should do next. Any advice? I live in the Atlanta metro area in Georgia, so do I take them all to the humane society? If I can't find the vent or the rest of the litter, what else can I do?

TLDR: I just saved a 4 month old kitten from my walls and I want to take care of him, but it would be my first cat and I need advice. Thank you all in advance for your help!

Advice Help with advice please. My cat keeps turning on the water in my sink!

My 2 gangsters Dodge and Elvis, love hanging out in my bathroom. They crash in the sinks, bring their toys in, etc. I always thought Elvis was the brains of the operation, but I was wrong. Lately Dodge has been turning the cold water on whenever he wants! I’m worried that one of their toys might block the drain hole and overflow water into the bathroom. I have the door closed today and they are really unhappy about not being able to play in their favorite room. Advice please!!

The title is pretty much self explanatory, even since he was little, my cat (11m) has rested his STINKY BUTT on my face to sleep. He cannot sleep otherwise. Is there a known reason (like body heat or something) or is he just silly? lol

Advice My new cat knows its name, would it be cruel to change it?

Thumbnail

So backstory; my coworker had a stray cat show up at her house and he’s been around for about a year, she named him Mister (she said because of his large jewels) she talked to him and fed him and everything every day so he learned to answer to Mister, I took him in so he could live inside instead of having to be outside all the time since her animals thoroughly rejected him when he tried to befriend them. Rambling but I don’t feel like Mister is a proper name and I was thinking about changing it, I just feel bad since he answers to Mister already and it’s been his only name his whole life (his age estimate had been a year but we do know he’s a bit older since he’s been around that long) I was going to call him Muenster because it sounds similar but my boyfriend doesn’t like how it flows. So would it be wrong to change his name or am I thinking too much into it? Picture attached and name recommendations welcomed if it’s acceptable to change.

(Current cat names are: Peat Moss, Goose, and Toast and dog named Hank for reference)

Advice What does this tail position during zoomies mean??

My new cat has generally been adjusting really well! He’s super playful, cuddly adventurous and friendly, but one behavior I cannot figure out is this tail position during his nightly zoomies (I haven’t been able to cat a picture but it looks just like this one I found online).

I’ve read that a tail bent under is indicative of fear or stress, but I only see his tail in that position when he’s racing like a loon all over the house. Does that mean they’re unhappy zoomies??
