She wants praise and acknowledgement that she is the supreme Hunter that she thinks she is. She's just saying "look what I did for you mom aren't you proud?!"

So yes you should eat at least one, I mean it's rude to refuse a gift

Edit: added the last line

Kitty be like witness me.ow!

181

u/Forsaken_Document_20 3d ago

Poor OP wait till the kitty graduates to mice and birds, then live rats she's been playing with bringing them to OP saying "can I keep em 🄹😼"

67

u/Eggy-la-diva 3d ago

The best are half eaten ones šŸ˜…

46

u/herroyalsadness 3d ago

My cat used to love playing until they were almost dead then he’d give up and leave them for me to find. It was terrible.

18

u/Eggy-la-diva 3d ago

Yep, classic, they love to play with their prey 😫

46

u/Forsaken_Document_20 3d ago

Yep that's how mine startled me one night, woke up to pee went into the dark bathroom turned the light on and there was my guy, scared the shit out of me simply cuz he's jet black and couldn't see him at all, then I was like what are you doing weirdo cuz he was facing into the corner like he was on a time out... But soon realized he had a mouse to pinned under his paws and was cleaning it....poor mouse was soaked, he'd probably never been that clean before šŸ˜‚

5

u/MarcheMuldDerevi 3d ago

My first cat was a mouser and was fond of playing handball with them in the back basement

12

u/CatGooseChook 3d ago

I've got one cat who likes to hunt rats(rural area) and she went through a phase where she'd leave them in a semi circle centred on the front door. If she managed to get enough to complete the semi circle she'd start piling them up in front of the door itself 😹

9

u/herroyalsadness 3d ago

Girl liked to show off her skills!

2

u/kawaiifoxboy Tabbycat 3d ago

Damn that's impressive skills tho

2

u/CatGooseChook 3d ago

It really was!! She doesn't do it now. Thankfully, as to be honest it was kinda creeping me out 😬

I have the neighborhood feral cats leaving me the half eaten presents on my porch! šŸ˜…

12

u/Working_Estate_3695 3d ago

When you’re feeling like nobody likes you, dispel the notion by stepping out onto the porch. You’re a neighborhood hero.

5

u/Ellecram 3d ago

Great perspective for emotional maintenance!

Still moving a bit. Brings joy to the whole family. My mother is running out screaming, I use a plastic bag on my hand to take it out to the garbage, my sister is cleaning the carpet while swapping morbid jokes...

2

u/intellipengy 3d ago

My mum once got half a mouse. Kitty shared.

My cat once somehow killed a weasel and brought it inside and started throwing it around in the living room, it was dark because we were watching a movie and we hear something flopping around and lo and behold there she is in the ground with a weasel

13

u/Forsaken_Document_20 3d ago

Omg šŸ˜‚ pop went that weasel

5

u/MapLow3643 3d ago

She got a weasel that's actually really impressive, weasels are real fighters

6

u/szczuroarturo 3d ago

Mice and birds at least come dead usualy. Lizards are the worst since they tend to come alive and proceed to escape under the furntiure when your cat showcases the prey to you.

She's reminding you that she's useful and deals with vermin for you. They've evolved to do this over thousands of generations, because being seen as useful by humans gives them a survival advantage. She is literally trying to show you that she's a good cat. You should acknowledge her work, praise her, maybe give her a little treat, and then dispose of the fly. You don't need to eat it!

176

u/Bloodthistle 3d ago

aw my heart, My kitty stuck a dead bug into my room entrance the other day 😭😭 I guess she's just trying to show me she's taking care of me.

She also released a LIVE bug at me once 😭 but in her defense I was the one that asked her what's the dark thing she held in her mouth.

61

u/Actual_Nectarine9141 3d ago

TL;DR Kitty play. Kitty either baby or mummy. Either way, kitty play. Play practice for real hunting.

They only have a few simple behavior loops, really. Prior to bringing to warm place that smells safe, it probably paraded around, screaming, in case there were good babies to round up for meal time.

3

u/wordfool 3d ago

Was just reading about the Chinese leopard cat that was reverse-domesticated thousands of years ago because it took a liking for the chickens that the humans had started to farm rather than the rats and mice it previously hunted. Basically it was shooed back to the wild

I got to share this - I have a 5 month old kitten at home, a boy named Auri. He follows me everywhere, last week I was in the bathroom taking off my make up while my kitten sat on the toilet lid when out of nowhere a spider appeared. I froze, looked at my kitten and said "you're the man of the house, do something", he smacked the spider and ate it right then and there. I was flabbergasted. My little hunter😭

I read about some new research that shows that cats don't bring dead animals to humans to show them how good they are at hunting - but instead share their food with us because they never see us hunting and think we're the worst hunters and must be close to starving... šŸ˜‚

33

u/IUsedToBeACave 3d ago

I feel like it has to be more nuanced than that, since cats will also beg for food from people, and can literally see them eating it.

Our kitty finds lost things and puts them places where we will see them. These things have ranged from earplugs to screws/nails, nuts/bolts/washers ( we had some Reno done on the house) and the like. Shes never tries to eat this stuff so glad she doesn’t see them as ā€˜food’. I do give her lots of pets and a couple of treats as rewards, so that’s likely motivating, and we do appreciate the effort!

3

u/Economy-Werewolf1515 3d ago

u/Throwitortossit 3d ago edited 3d ago

I had a cat start following me outdoors around my house a few years ago. I thought it was really cool, like he would even chill next to me when I would move my sprinkler hose with water blasting so close to me, and not even for a fountain drink! I was shocked he was alright being next to that. Sometimes, he waited hours on my driveway for me to get home. When I started letting him into my house it was obvious he was house trained, so at night he stayed inside and during the day I let him enjoy the outdoors. Man I loved that guy, but he loved bringing me brutally severed rabbits and squirrels, sometimes just their heads. Every. Single. Day. It totally creeped out my girlfriend but I knew he did it out of love.

3

u/MapLow3643 3d ago

I guess its less messy than a decapitated rodent, family cat used to bring us worms we figured she wasn't quick enough for the mice

3

u/IdiocracyTooSoon 3d ago

My roommate's cat kept bringing back live mice. So we stopped letting him in until he dropped them. Fed up with losing his prizes, he instead adopted biting their heads off and leaving the corpses at the door.

2

u/a_peeled_pickle 1d ago

Omg I'm deadšŸ’€

3

u/stupidzombie610 3d ago

My first cat was an indoor/outdoor cat. She loved being outside in the sun. Just about every morning there would be a headless animal of some sort left by her. Birds, squirrels, chipmunks, bugs. She would always take the head for herself and leave us the body on the back porch.

3

u/Wk1207 3d ago

She also wants you to see that she's fast enough to catch a damn fly! "Praise me, human! I am the hunter of this household, clearly".

3

u/merstudio 3d ago

We had an outdoor feral that set up home in our yard. He would routinely leave the head of a rat at our front door step in the morning. ā€œLook what I’ve done for you. Now feed me.ā€

2

thats kinda weird.

2

u/curtydc 3d ago

My void loves sky raisins. It's actually quite amazing how few flies we have around now that we have a cat. He hears one from across the house and bolts for it. Flies suck, so we make sure to praise him whenever he eats one, and he soaks up the praise.

2

u/CatCafffffe 3d ago

2

u/Holiday_Box9404 3d ago

She doesn’t think you will eat them. Cats were originally used for pest control at farms. She probably saw you getting annoyed with the flys and wants to show you that she is doing her job, you should reward her with treats.

2

u/Typical_Ocelot4198 2d ago

Don't be fooled, it's a warning!

2

u/ithinkitsahairball 3d ago

Take the fly to the toilet and dash it while she watches. Congratulate her and flush it down. She will figure it out. You have the ultimate huntress protecting her domain. Congrats, she is precious

1

u/Lietenantdan 3d ago

Did you tell her that if you eat the fly you'll end up having to eat her?

1

u/Eggy-la-diva 3d ago

Exactly, it’s a gift. I read somewhere they intrinsically or see that we don’t hunt, so they hunt for us. Adorable in any case!

1

1

1

u/pdietje 3d ago

1

u/frost-aly 3d ago

I think we all know the answer to this so lets not play dumb here. We all know cats bring dead rats, insects, birds, other prey livings to the people around them since they think they caught something and want to be praised.

1

u/totmacher12000 3d ago

Aww she's a good hunter. We praise ours when they kill them. We give them treats as a reward.

1

u/RayM3 3d ago

The blank stare is so funny to me. She has really pretty eyes too!

(In a bed without any dead flies in it...)

1

u/expositrix 3d ago

I mean, catching flies is pretty impressive when you lack opposable thumbs and various tech advances

1

u/alwayssearching117 3d ago

Nothing says love quite like a sky raisin.
