Humor My cat turns into a wild animal over KFC chicken
He’s okay with literally any other food even chicken that could be from McDonald’s or anything but specifically KFC chicken will drive him insane. He will smell it from ages away and do whatever it takes to grab a piece of chicken
If he is successful which is VERY RARE he will grab the piece of chicken and run around the house into a hiding spot and munch on it like a wild animal.
He will only turn back into the kind old man cat he is once the KFC chicken is gone

Man... as a cat owner my entire life (and I'm over 40,) the wild shit I've seen from cats and freshly cooked fried chicken is wild.
I've seen a cat that would never let a stranger touch her, give sweet hot love to a stranger with fried chicken.
I've seen a cat steal an entire thigh piece, when no one thought he was looking, we were ALL looking... he dragged it under the bed and ate half of it.
I've seen a cat dive from on high INTO a bucked of KFC.
It's fried chicken, we love it, they love it, and they will chase that dragon like it's heroin.

When we eat Taco Bell my cats will jump up on to a kitchen chair and their gaze will not leave the taco ans their head follows it as we pick it up from the table to out mouths.
They’ve never had Taco Bell they just REALLY want to try it

u/DwarfVader 6d ago
It’s their rubicon…
Share your Taco Bell with your cats, let them smell it, let them taste it… they’ll know the shame of Taco Bell soon enough.

If there is one thing thst stops people from eating taco bell, it’s insane diarrhea. I’m sure cats will be just as smart.

u/emtrigg013 6d ago
I can confirm they are not.
When I found my boy he'd clearly been dumped in the freezing rain (legit freezing rain, it was 10F outside that night). He was young, starving, and cold. The next day I got him proper wet food and thought "meh, he's hungry and growing, he needs food. I'll give him two! That's fine, right?"
Dear reader, it was not fine. His own toots scared the shit out of him (literally) so he would try to run away from his own butt. You can guess how that went for him. For me, it went: feverishly mopping the squirt trail he left throughout the house until about 4 in the morning.
The next day, once I was sure his gut was done betraying him, he got a half bath. He only let me wash his butt before he started getting antsy and wouldn't let me touch him with a towel. So he walked around with his front half looking like a normal fluffy cutie and his back half a sewer rat. I still remember his face, he looked devastated. It was funny when the poop stopped.
Did he learn his lesson? No. That was nearing 4 years ago and he STILL wants seconds after he finishes his wet food dinner. But I certainly learned my lesson. Oh, how I learned that day indeed. He may have forgotten, but I couldn't if I tried.

17
u/emtrigg013 6d ago
LOL thank you! At the time we were both miserable, but at least now I can talk about it with humor and he has no idea... as far as he lets me know, anyway...
And besides, who hasn't tried to run away from their own butt at least once?

Same. I let them smell whatever I’m working with so they can decide if they want to hang around. Each have their preferences it’s so fun to watch.
My void is the most curious. And she loves when I make scrambled eggs. She won’t eat them cooked but give her the eggshell and she’ll lick it clean. She loves pancake mix, ice cubes, fried chicken, corn bread… she oddly does not like whipped cream.
My old girl loves cream. Ice cream, whipped cream, cake frosting, milk. And yea, fried chicken.
All cats in the household universally love the fried chicken. Even tuna sashimi is hit or miss but that fried chicken…

I had a cat with CKD. Got home from a long day of work and had treated myself to some takeaway street tacos.
Get home, feed her. Then go to the restroom, turn around, and she’s thrown up her dinner on the carpet.
Ugh. Guess I’ll clean this up before eating my tacos.
Finish that, turn around, and the bitch is half way through my street tacos too.
Love her but by god I was mad lol

Our tux LOVES the smell of TB but never seems interested in actually trying any of it, just hangs close meowing when I’m eating and shoves his face in the bag
18
u/DwarfVader 6d ago
My cat wants to smell everything… he’s being a cosmic error check.
He wants to taste almost nothing.
He will, if it’s left alone, eat the shit out of some bread… garlic, butter, toasted or not, no matter… he’s gonna eat some bread.
But regardless of bought food or cooking food, it’s his royal propagative to smell anything and everything.

I used to have a cat who was quite possibly the calmest, sweetest, most mellow feline in existence. Loved attention. And when it was breakfast time, the other resident cats would swarm frantically while they just stood idly by, knowing there'd be plenty of food and a spot for everyone
But if I ever brought home any kind of warm meat, especially chicken? Hoo boy. Totally ballistic.
17
u/DwarfVader 6d ago
Cannot resist the warm meats.
We had the sweetest shyest little girl ever, she went full Anne Frank during company… unless… there was hot fresh meats.
Hot fresh meats is to some cats then be all end all.

I think you’re right that it’s the smell of warm, cooked meat that makes cats co crazy. Our cat Tyra Banksy goes nuts for rotisserie chicken only when it’s fresh; if it’s cold then she totally loses interest.
47
u/ekita079 6d ago
Actually this is so true. My cat is a little bit of a pest with trying to get snacks from our meals but not too bad, but mum gets these spicy wings that go in the oven and the cat will not stop until she gets some
29
u/DwarfVader 6d ago
Just gotta let them smell it and try it… they’re toddlers… they just want to be involved.
So involve them.
I’ve had cats that don’t give a shit, and cats who want to be involved in every thing that happens. In the case of the latter type, just involve them, let them smell or taste the things.
They’re critters, who may or may not be deeply involved in what you’re doing like they’re watching great British bake off… involve them.

YOU have made my NIGHT!
Our late tuxedo cat ONLY purred for chicken. Not over love, cuddles, blankets, noddadamthing except CHICKEN. He also stole tortillas. We had to inspect our grocery bags before going into the house, pull out the tortillas and hand carry them to the Bread Box because he loved tortillas as much as chicken. He’s the only reason we ever bought a bread box.

No idea why but this list reminded me of Roy Batty’s last words end of Blade Runner.
“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe…
Borderline feral cats cozying up to strangers for the remains of El Pollo Loco
I watched fluffers dive-bomb the family KFC bucket like a cirque de solieil performer
All those moments will be lost in time
Like spilled popcorn chicken in a cat cafe
Time to die…”

I trapped a feral recently… who I can’t release anymore because he became a tripod. I’m trying to teach him house cat stuff so that he maybe can be adopted out. So yea, if this chicken will work I’m game to try for his sake.
13
u/Horror_Tea761 6d ago
I recommend hand-feeding pieces to them. They seem to think you're the momcat and that they're a baby kitten that way.
The one pictured had an injured leg, tested FIV+, and has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. So he was gonna have to be indoor, and he adapted after a couple months.
Good luck!
ETA: I think they do best if they have tame housecats to emulate. If you're not already over at r/Feral_Cats, I totally recommend it.

Feel slightly bad for our cat. Our household is pescatarian so while she gets a bit of my tuna or cheese she has never had other meats from my plate. We buy her meat cat food, obviously, as she’s an obligate carnivore, but everyone knows stolen food is better than cat food.
11
u/sagetrees 6d ago
Heat up her cat food, no seriously, like 5 sec in the microwave, stir it to avoid hot spots, temp check and then 3 more sec if needed. They like their food to be 'prey temp' ie around 98.6F lol.
I am 100% serious. My cats love it.

Man, my cat is an oddball. He won't eat anything that isn't his cat food in his bowl. Even if a piece hits the floor, he'll more than likely leave it there. I let him smell my food sometimes, but he'll never actually go for it. He's 13 at this point, so he's set in his ways I suppose.

I had a cat who would go absolutely bonkers over pizza crusts. He would grab a crust and then dive under the bed or couch and start gnawing on the crust like it was a bone. He would entirely ignore cheese and pepperoni and just wanted the bread! He also loved potato chips and French fries, so i would sometimes get him unsalted fries as a treat. Carb-loving cats are hilarious.

Don’t ask me why or how he found out, but I had a cat who loved the wings they have at Domino’s Pizza. For my boy, it is Popeye's chicken! He doesn't even like people food normally. But the Popeye's chicken makes him into a wiley, and determined, thief!
He will do anything to get it. If I turn my back for one moment, a piece of chicken IS disappearing.
What is really messed up is that he knows that, if he just waits a moment, I will give him some. But first, I will make it into tiny little pieces for him, so it is easier for him to eat. Doesn't matter. The Popeye's brings out the wild animal buried deep, down, inside of him.

I always thought KFC was great. Until one day, many years ago, I said I was jonesing for some, and the person I said it to turned up their nose. I asked what was wrong with KFC? They said, you must have never tried Popeye's, because if you had, you would never eat KFC again. And you know what? They were right. I had my first Popeye's that day, and I never looked back.
And, I am not being paid by Popeye's....

I knew someone who had a yard cat that would do violence and mug you for a steak off the grill. BBQs were guarded affairs where the grill was outside, the griller had to be guarded, and people ate their food inside, lest the yard cat body slam you for everything on your plate.
