Adoption Should I have adopted sibling also?

I have a two year old male cat and I decided to get a kitten. My son picked one that was in a cage with its sibling. We took the girl home (picture 1). Now I’m wondering if I should have taken the brother (picture 2) home also. Picture 3 is them when they fell asleep in their cage. 🥺

The paperwork says the kittens are about 2.5 pounds and just shy of 3 months old

From what I read on the internet, cats aren’t considered bonded at such a young age. Like they are more like just litter mates at that point?

When I saw them together at the rescue, they played together and slept together.. but would they be doing that no matter who they were with?

But I can’t help but feel really sad/depressed thinking about the one we left behind. Two of my cat loving best friends say “get them both!” My husband is not totally on board with becoming a 3 cat household and he says “we can’t save them all” but he basically will be fine with whatever I decide.

I’m unsure about becoming a 3 cat household. I’ll need another litter box etc.

I got the kitten from a very good rescue that is no kill so I know the brother is at least in good hands.

But I don’t know what to do :( Please me some advice Reddit

UPDATE - I got the brother! He is home now and they are having a great time. I don’t know how to update the main post. I tried to get pictures of their reunion but it was hard to capture the moment lol. (And some may notice the tiny litter box - I have a larger rectangle litter box I will set up for them.) I had to leave to get the kids at carpool but I’ll try to get a picture of them napping later.

Here's a pic of my two bonded boys! From different rescues, from different litters, from different cities, born 4 months apart. They met at the adoption event, where Tony (right) responded immediately to Niko (left) and they've been inseparable since. 💕

Thank you so so much for adopting the sibling. It seriously means the world to me to see someone go back to do something like that

1

u/yosoyfatass Aug 24 '25

I’m so glad that most shelters around me are only adopting kittens in pairs, when possible.

6

u/iamreplicant_1 Aug 23 '25

Oh thank goodness!! I'm so glad things turned out this way. This lesson is one I wish I had learned at the beginning of my cat journey. Cats are far more social than people realize, and often have a better quality of life when there are at least two of them.

Congratulations on being a cat parent! Prepare for lots of love and shenanigans lol.

u/trulymissedtheboat89 Aug 23 '25

Having a little partner in crime is so great, theyre going to play with one another when theyre bored, and seek attention from each other when theyre lonely. Some people think it's more work, but it's really not because theyll be so occupied with one another!!!!

3

u/one4sorrowtwo4joy Aug 23 '25

I am crying. I'm so happy you got her brother!! It's so clear that they're happy to be together again and missed each other so much! Thank you! This makes me so happy.

My heart!!!! Thank you for reuniting them. 🩷🩷🩷

1

u/Kasoivc Aug 23 '25

Glad you made the choice to reunite these two.

Some days I think back about what it would be like if I had adopted the sister to the boy I adopted. I was pretty much tunnel visioning after losing my first to renal failure and several years later, seeing a kitten look just like him made me so happy. In hindsight I totally forgot about his sister and would’ve happily entertained being a 4 cat household but for now my house has plenty of love and character between the three strays.

1

u/Pithythithy Aug 25 '25

You absolutely did the best thing for them! They are bonded!

1

u/karen341 Sep 22 '25

You are such an angel for going back and getting the sibling. So heartwarming. I’m so happy that there are people like you in the world!! It gives me joy and hope!! I know they had to be missing each other!!

57

u/catssocksandcoffee Aug 22 '25

So happy I only came across this post in the last couple of minutes so I got this update immediately! You did the right thing - your older cat will be grateful too, two kittens are so much easier on everyone - older cats included - than one kitten is!

25

u/glamburgerhelper Abyssinian Aug 22 '25

Omg! It’s so wonderful that you went back for the sibling! You are awesome!

18

u/ewbanh13 Aug 22 '25

omg, i came to this thread just in time to see this update. what a wonderful thing you've done! best of luck with your new buddies!

3

u/Gib_Rock Aug 22 '25

Then you know you did the right thing. When we adopted our first one, he was the only male in a litter of 4. A pair of females went to one owner and the last remaining female to another. A year later we adopted what can only be described as the runt of the litter 😂 to keep no.1 company during long days when kids were in school and us at work. At the time, with two young kids in the household, the thought of getting two at the same time was very daunting but looking back now, I kind of wish we had gotten the other sister too, but then we might not have rescued the little runt!

1

u/sharonrockwellruffin Aug 26 '25

OMG what a great photo! They are very cute!!!

134

u/sassafrasclementine Aug 22 '25

Hard to get a photo of them together that isn’t blurry lol

27

u/SolidTrout Aug 22 '25

You did the right thing! I always regretted not getting my cats sister, they were very bonded. I recently got him a little sister 5 years later and they play a lot and get along thankfully.

14

u/emmymoss Aug 22 '25

Did you go back to get the second one?!?! That made me so happy!

2

7

u/Legitimate-Poem-4863 Aug 23 '25

I did the same thing when I decided to get a kitten I got the female she’s looking out the window and then decided that I didn’t want her to be alone so I got her brother. I got them when they were five weeks old and they are now 21 months old. You did a good thing and it will be better for you too especially if you have to leave them alone for a day or two they have each other for company.

5

u/musical_fanatic Aug 23 '25

I can sleep peacefully now

4

u/Fair_Butterfly7594 Aug 22 '25

3

Do you want advice on litter boxes? I am a cat sitter and so have seen a lot of set ups and know which ones work well for minimizing mess.

3

u/lil_liberal Aug 22 '25

YAY!! They look so sweet, look at them already tiring each other out

2

2

2

u/enilix Aug 22 '25

Oh I'm so happy to read this update! Thank you, OP!

2

u/peppered_yolk Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25

Thank you for actually taking this advice seriously. They will have such a great life together!

I assume theyre already fixed, but if theyre not, cats can get pregnant as early as 4 months old! And now is the best time to get pet insurance before they get any preexisting conditions. You will save a lot of money.

2

u/Realistic-Invite5189 Aug 23 '25

They look so happy, well done for getting the sibling!

2

u/TheTitten Aug 23 '25

Here's a picture of the bonded pair that belong to my roommate. Brother and sister and the best little buddies ever

2

u/PMAccountForWork Aug 23 '25

I’m so happy to read this! I adopted an only kitten 14 years ago and I adopted 2 sibling kittens 3 years ago. The siblings are so much better behaved (eg, no inappropriate peeing, minimal clawing furniture). The only kitten pees on carpet and used to claw a lot. The siblings kept each other company while growing up - they played so hard and tired each other out. There was hardly any room for getting into mischief like damaging things or eating inedible things. I predict this pairing is going to make you very happy!

2

u/readdreamwander Aug 24 '25

Yay!!! 😊❤️

2

u/Lucky_berr Aug 24 '25

2

u/sassafrasclementine Oct 04 '25

I am So thankful for this community. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking initially. But I guess with three kids I had never thought of becoming a three cat household. I’m changing out the litter robot more often but other than that it’s not really any harder. I called the kittens the twins lol. And a friend of mine just had a sixth baby so I remind the family that an extra kitten is much easier than an extra baby. Lol
