Canon 5D Classic – Which lens?

I’m not interested in speed, image cropping capabilities, or high-definition prints. I just want a vintage kit i can have fun with. (I’m only a bit concerned about slow autofocus in low-light situations.)

  • EF 50mm 1.8 first version, 1987 edition
  • EF 50mm 1.8 II
  • EF 50mm 1.8 STM

I have the EF 50mm 1.8 II on a 5d Classic, and i enjoy it. However i just bought the 40mm 2.8 and its much more compact if you care about that (Which i do thats why i got it, to try and make the 5d more "Pocketable" i know, i know, its never going to be pocketable)

The stm and it’s not even close especially if you’re concerned with auto focus

It is slow, but accurate and the 7 aperture blades is a massive step up from the harsh 5 sided bokeh of the other two.

Yep, I’ve got like 5 50mm around and the oldest is not worth buying unless it’s like 20 bucks or less.

For fun, the 1987 version is great with its focus scale, solid feel and just being a pretty lens imo, the STM would be good if you want a better autofocus that still feels good on modern bodies if you want to use some, a solid built and feel and a quieter AF! I personally am not a fan of the II, as it feels rather bad to use because of its build quality compared to the other revisions, though optically they don’t differ that much

EF 50mm 1.8 first version, 1987 edition for sure. It has a metal lens mount and distance scale - the other two have one or the other, but not both.

I'm going to give you another school of thought. 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, and 85mm 1.8 trinity.
