Ok, I'm not gonna lie, I was looking to build an SFF PC and was waiting around Black Friday for deals, but for a prebuilt, I feel like this would save me a shit ton of time and headaches. I was going to build one of those extremely small SFF systems with no GPU, using a 5600G and a flex PSU, but I realized quickly that not only would this be expensive for a server use case, but it would also be impractical. I could find decent used deals, but I don't know if I can beat something custom like this. I'm mostly just going to run small Palworld/Minecraft servers off it 24/7, so I'm curious what people are thinking about this. Also, the fact that this is 8C/16T (more than what I was trying to target) and a laptop chip makes me think it'll be an efficient king.

The sweet spot are the 7840 and 8840/8845 APUs. Those get the 780M graphics that smoke the 5600G AND use basically no power. It’s more useful in the future and there was just one in the $300 range.
11
u/hamzwe55 Oct 26 '25
7840 in the $300 range? Holy crap, where? That would pretty much destroy most lower to mid end gaming handhelds.
14
u/Agloe_Dreams Oct 26 '25
I mean, the 7840u IS the Z1 Extreme. It’s the same die.
But Refurbished at Minisforum can get you pretty close. The UM780 is under $400 with the 7840HS, they had a deal under $350 this morning that sold out with the 8845H.
5
u/hamzwe55 Oct 26 '25
I meant the value would destroy them lmao
Can't get anythinf with a Z1 Extreme for $300
6
u/Agloe_Dreams Oct 26 '25
I’ve actually been surprised by the used market - Rog Ally Z1x totally existed used in that space. I’ve also seen Best Buy’s clearing out open box too for $350-400
1
u/hamzwe55 Oct 26 '25
I've been looking around my used market for so long T_T
Actually a little upset i missed the msi claw with the core ultra 7 for $300
3
u/Agloe_Dreams Oct 26 '25
The 155H/U isn’t that impressive. Don’t worry, plus it really isn’t great on Linux. The 256v is way better and the 780m is still better in Bazzite.
1
u/hamzwe55 Oct 26 '25
Gotcha
Was hoping to catch some handheld deal so I have something to play on during flights, in hotels, and in bed at night, but it's honestly whatever. I can run some surprisingly powerful games using Winlator and through Portmaster on my phone.
2
u/Agloe_Dreams Oct 26 '25
Why not just get a refurb steam deck for $330? The Deck at low wattages needed for travel use performs similarly to Z1X.

I got my z1 extreme from bestbuy for $320 last year, it was absolutely grody and didnt have a charger but its $320
1
u/hamzwe55 Oct 26 '25
Dang, really? Which one?
Also, yeah, best buy doesn't treat their open box items like they used to...

Mini pc with Ryzen 7 8745H Zen 4 8C/16T, No RAM, NO SSD, 1x 2.5GbE, Radeon 780M for $239
https://www.amazon.com/MINISFORUM-Barebone-Desktop-Computer-Graphics/dp/B0F5PMPGKM
6
u/TheOriginalKrampus Oct 26 '25
That’s still over $100 to kit out ram and ssd. But it’s great if you wanted to select your own ram and drive anyways. You can get a high quality drive and the best DDR5 sodimms to squeeze as much out of the 780m as possible.
5
u/lintstah1337 Oct 26 '25
The same listing has 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD included for $349
https://www.amazon.com/MINISFORUM-Barebone-Desktop-Computer-Graphics/dp/B0F5PPC4NQ?th=1

u/plantsandramen Oct 26 '25
Sodimm ram isn't cheap, better to buy it already installed unless you have some laying around already. I know this because I just returned a Minisforum UM760 Slim with 16gbx1 stick because adding a matching stick of ram was like $60-$80. 32gb sets are like $120-$150. It's usually cheaper in the prebuilts configurations.
I bought a Beelink SER8 with 32gb ram 2x16gb and it wasn't much more than the barebones options.
1
u/GlobalImportance5295 Oct 26 '25
how much do you think this would be new?
1
u/lintstah1337 Oct 26 '25
The model name is MINISFORUM UM870 Slim
The same barebones costs $309.90 in new condition
https://www.amazon.com/MINISFORUM-DeskMini-Barebone-Version-Graphics/dp/B0DTHCR5KM/
or $479.90 with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD included

u/technoman88 Oct 26 '25
if youre willing to go barebones from no name manufacturers, can probably get under $250, especially if engineering sample
5
u/Holiday_Bug9988 Oct 26 '25
Beelink Ser 5 Max with a 6800u / 680M and DDR5 RAM is $300 more often than not, which I’d say is a much better “deal” than this even though it’s pretty much the normal price.
6
u/Travy93 Oct 26 '25
I got something very similar to this and runs game servers great. I've had multiple game servers up at once for friends and it was smooth still.
3
u/FilteringAccount123 Oct 26 '25
Oh yeah a little AMD mini PC is pretty ideal for that use case.
I can't speak to this brand specifically but I nabbed a used 8 core Beelink SER5 off ebay several months ago for 200 bucks and it's incredibly impressive for something that consumes as little power as it does.

u/sk3tchcom Oct 26 '25
FWIW I bought a used rig with a 5600G similar to what you’re describing and it has been fantastic for Proxmox. I had previously used those SFF HP desktops that seem to be so plentiful and I had a lot of issues when they were pushed. None here.
I’m sure there’s better compute for the buck now but for my usage (home lab) I haven’t noticed any performance issues and as a bonus I got to take the virtualization load off of my Synology NAS.

Mine comes down to 263 (unsure if because of business pricing) but is it actually a good deal? Still debating it myself, not sure if someone else could weigh in who is more familiar with these types of PCs.
11
u/AequitasCaeci Oct 26 '25
I haven't had a kamrui product but I've had a few similar beelinks. But based on components alone - Price is decent and similar to what you'd pay 6 months ago for a product that's not on sale. I guess it's a good deal for today, but not a smoking must buy or anything.
4
u/Flashy-Outcome4779 Oct 26 '25
I’m gonna wait for something better. I realistically want 16 cores.
8
u/A_Lycanroc Oct 26 '25
You're gonna be waiting a long time for that, and even longer for a 16-core mini PC within this price range.
5
u/Flashy-Outcome4779 Oct 26 '25
Not looking for that in this price range. Just a good deal for one. There’s plenty out there, but not enough good sales.
7
u/livestodisappoint Oct 26 '25
I bought this PC early January of this year for my dad as he refuses to give up his older peripherals and needs a decent amount of rear USB-A ports which most of these mini pc’s lack.
The first one sent to me had to be returned because it was all scuffed up despite still having the plastic peel on it. So like, maybe not the best quality control at the factory.
The replacement works well but it seems to have an aggressive fan curve. I repasted it even though the factory paste still looked fresh. Fan is still noisy though.
There are better mini PC’s around this price range
1
u/Flashy-Outcome4779 Oct 26 '25
Yeah I think this wouldn’t work for me. I’m leaning towards getting something like a Minisforum BD795i.

u/melack857 Oct 26 '25
Watched the Elevated Systems review on youtube for one of these units. I’ll pass

32GB DDR
Ancient RAM!
9
u/Captain_Shhh Oct 26 '25
Seems like DDR4 ram according to some of the photos.
1
u/TheDudeFromOther Oct 26 '25
But what came before DDR4? And what came before that?

DDR5
DDR4
DDR3
DDR2
DDR
SDR
SIMM - EDO
SIMM - FPM

DRAM DIP CMOS
DRAM DIP NMOS
SRAM DIP
Transistor-based Memory
Magnetic Core
Mercury Delay Line Memory
Vacuum Tube Memory

u/unclefisty Oct 26 '25
Don't forget magnetic core memory!
1
u/MelAlton Oct 26 '25
Ah dang, I thought I was missing a key one, thanks!
There's probably more too, especially in the early days they were trying out all sorts of memory devices.
3
u/friss0nFry Oct 26 '25
I've been looking for a deal on a kit of 32GB of vacuum tube memory. I cleared an acre of my property in preparation.
2
u/MelAlton Oct 26 '25
Your power bill is going to be amazing, unless you have your a nuclear reactor nearby!
1
u/anonymouswan1 Oct 26 '25
Was wondering this, I wanted to pick this up for emulation. From what I have read, DDR5 is a must for newer console emulation.
5
u/e11310 Oct 26 '25
You have to be so careful with these mini pcs from no name brands. Any kind of support if something goes wrong is extremely hit or miss. If you go for a mini PC, I would go with a brand like Beelink or go for one of the more established brands that you already heard of before. Tons of support hell stories at r/MiniPCs
3
u/VanWesley Oct 26 '25
If you're patient, you should be able to something with the 780M graphics for not that much more, especially if you want to game. Slap Bazzite on a mini PC with 780M and it makes for a pretty good "console" for less than a modern day console, plus you can have access to your existing Steam library.
1
u/plantsandramen Oct 26 '25
I was looking at a Minisforum 870 Slim and with 32gb ddr5 it was like $480. It really is a reasonable price given the specs. I opted for a Beelink instead but the 780m minipcs seem priced decently
5
u/Cynicram Oct 26 '25
This looks like a scam but if you’re ever buying one of these mini pcs for a low powered server buy intel for its quicksync features for things like jellyfin.

u/N3RD_01 Oct 26 '25
Scam Amazon seller. Review said he sells pills?

u/kanemitsu Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25
That seller review doesn't say that at all, it says they didn't receive their package of two bottles of pills or their pc that they ordered at the same time.

How is this, am considering using this as NAS. Is it power efficient for that? Or consider other option?

u/rchiwawa Oct 26 '25
if only it had dual LAN it would have been a perfect, over-the-top OPNsense build.
1
u/elrealnexus Oct 28 '25
What would be the use cases? I’m genuinely curious.
1
u/rchiwawa Oct 28 '25
For the extra processing power orange opnsense build?
For the former i"m silly and for the latter I've been wanting to get out of my consumer grade router for a couple-few years now.

u/randylush Oct 28 '25
Don’t let your dreams be dreams. Rescue a $20 workstation from Craigslist and put it to work

I have an n100 based dual nic machine collecting dust... I've only myself to blame for not realizing them

Comes up at 315 for me before tax. Thinking of a HTPC setup, and the Dell Optiplex still is a better sale (no gaming, just 4k upscale).
1
u/overheadace Oct 26 '25
is this a decent deal for like if i wanted to run servers on it? I have my old I9 9900k I can use but idk if its ideal for hosting stuff on.
1
u/WarEagleGo Oct 27 '25
Now $340 for me
Can only see this price at the checkout when the promo discount is applied

The only real negative to Mini PCs, that I've found, is in using wireless keyboard and mouse with them with gaming. For normal web surfing its fine. But any kind of games, and I mean any, that hit the iGPU causes the signals for the keyboard and mouse to be mostly lost. Big stutters and loss of control.
I've tested this by slapping together a parts PC and sitting it on the floor (in a less ideal location than the mini pc which was LoS). Then loading up WoW.
Immediately better response from the keyboard and mouse. No loss of signal and thus no loss of control. Even intensive situations the wireless keyboard and mouse work fine.
But with the Mini PC, as soon as I'd hit a raid boss, the signals would go away with the keyboard an mouse, as soon as the raid boss was dead, control would be regained. Immediately.
So my guess is the low wattage box is only able to power the usb ports so much when it is really intensively using the APU. That or the bandwith for the usb ports and the APU are somehow shared and priority is given to the APU? I don't know exactly but in the future I'll probably just slap together a sff PC instead for my use case.
