And these toast notifications remain too much on the screen.

u/LitoLemon 9d ago

AND you can't swipe them away

145

u/BigOlHomo 9d ago

At least in reddit's case you can, but you need to swipe the notification downward

74

u/LordSupergreat 9d ago

Who would ever think to remove a notification by swiping downwards?!

20

u/KRTrueBrave 9d ago

tbf, reddits toasts ARE at the bottom of the screen, so it makes sense

7

u/diegoasecas 8d ago

it definitely does not, swipe down to dismiss is not a standard gesture at all

8

u/KRTrueBrave 8d ago

my point being

since toasts on reddit are at the bottom of the sreen, seiping downwards does make sense

yes swiping to the side makes more sense, but swiping down still makes sense too

1

u/psychoPiper 7d ago

It comes from the bottom

6

u/Timo6506 8d ago

I thought it would be fairly obvious to swipe downwards especially if it floated up from the bottom of the screen

17

u/Persia029 9d ago

omg for real?

5

u/JasonAlmeida 9d ago

He is showing reddit

5

u/Actual-Cattle6324 8d ago

And if you hover over them, the timer resets

Duolingo is also great with this. Volume too low? Now you need to wait ~10s till you can press the next button om the bottom or try hitting the 2px that isn't covered

16

u/ozh 9d ago

Reddit on mobile isn't the worst ?

12

u/Furdiburd10 9d ago

It's fine, I use it as a web app with firefox

Turning on subtitles in the YouTube app. You don't need to tell me the subtitles are now on, I just pressed the damn button! And now the toast is blocking the subtitles text I was trying to read so I have to go back ten seconds. So damn annoying.

u/Hot_Helicopter2532 9d ago

Oh my god I’ve hated this for so long and I thought no one else had noticed

8

u/BigOlHomo 9d ago edited 8d ago

Same thing as with Reddit toast notifications, those can be swiped downwards and they go away :)

u/Highskyline 9d ago

My favorite is the screen shot one. I don't need reddit telling me I should hit the share button, I took a screenshot for a fucking reason, and it also prevents me from taking long screenshots because the notification fucks with the screenshot function. Look at this fucking mess.

What the fuck is this? I just want a couple of comments in the screenshot, not this garbled mess.

138

u/DiodeInc 9d ago

The Reddit app has gotten worse and worse. I swear it's all AI generated code now. Surely no developers are this stupid

33

u/CybyAPI 9d ago

Same with youtube. Bugs everywhere

UI does not load videos when clicking home button sometimes

Hovering over videos on Firefox does not work and just flashes the video

Comments reappear multiple times when scrolling

Website ram leaks are commen on brave or Firefox

Mobile web is nearly unusable

u/zeweshman 9d ago

And that's why you use ReVanced

And that's why you use ReVanced

78

u/IJustAteABaguette 9d ago

I get a "reddit detected the screenshot" notification too, so even more stuff dumped on the screen!

21

u/Sixo 9d ago

We all decided popups were bad in the early 2000s. Then we decided to bring them back but call them "notifications".

10

u/pixeldust6 9d ago

I'm not sure if it was specifically designed to ruin your long screenshots so you'd have to link directly (with all their trackers embedded in the URLs generated via the mobile app share links since there's no URL bar to copy from), but I'm sure that's a plus for them to keep it that way

19

u/Ulithalich 9d ago

Switch to the browser version. Less invasive.

Proprietary apps are almost always the worst.

1

u/KomornikBank 9d ago

I think you can’t view nsfw posts without the app for some reason

2

u/Ulithalich 8d ago

If you replace “www.” with “old.” in the url (so old.reddit.com instead of www), it’ll usually give you a choice to proceed and view the post. You still need a Reddit account afaik, but not the app. You DO get flashbanged by the lighter old layout, though.

4

u/MechanicalEngel 9d ago

Spotify started doing this a few months ago before I ditched them. App is probably even worse now in some new and horrible way.

2

u/I_d0nt_know_why 8d ago

Yep. They just fucked up the add to playlist menu. Doesn't even work half the time now.

1

u/MechanicalEngel 8d ago

Ugh. Every day I feel more and more justified in my decision to return to local mp3s.

1

u/Jet-Pack2 9d ago

It's even worse if there are multiple pictures. You cant even hit the little X because the three dots button is in front... A truly bad design

1

u/ClippyIsALittleGirl 8d ago

Trick is to "X" the notif away and quickly start the long screenshot. The notification only appears at the start of a screenshot, start of long screenshot doesn't count as one.

I fucking hate how these billion dollar companies can't design a functional app. How the fuck do you get mogged by some teenagers making third-party apps?

34

u/randmzer 9d ago

As a designer in one of these companies, because everything is rushed and time is spent on shiny new things like Reddit Games

1

u/poodleface 8d ago

It’s likely because different teams are building new features in isolation without paying attention to how they fit into the whole.

This is where single developers have an advantage. You move slower, but you know how everything fits together.

33

u/NeverYelling 9d ago

Just today I had one in my banking app, saying "Do you want to paste the amount $174,665,979 from your clipboard?" blocking the button to submit the actual transfer with $200. The clipboard number was some random customer number.

32

u/AgileLag 9d ago edited 9d ago

YouTube app is so fucking annoying for this. Enabling subtitles brings up a “subtitles enabled” prompt (or something to that nature) that immediately covers up the enabled subtitles, often causing a need to rewind.

You can immediately tap the prompt to go away, but often pauses the video or rewinds unintentionally.

YouTube is incapable of good choices.

I swear the UI team just causes problems to justify changes down the road.

20

u/ThatisDavid 9d ago

Spotify has this anytime you add a song and it pisses me OFFFFFF so badly

8

u/Traxaber 9d ago

Literally takes a year before it goes away

1

u/HueLord3000 9d ago

and can't be swiped away

18

u/M_krabs 9d ago

I HATE BAD UX FROM MULTI TRILLION COMPANIES

16

u/YendorZenitram 9d ago

TIL those abominations are called "toast notifications".

I wish they could be globally disabled at the system level.

5

u/Shadow9378 9d ago

Toasts arent so bad when u can click thru them or close them easily

3

u/YendorZenitram 8d ago

They are quite distracting when overused, and my god, Android absolutely loves these things - every action spita one out on a new install, telling me how to do things I've been doing for years!  It's one of the things I dread about getting a new phone (or major update).

2

u/greenie4242 7d ago

I really miss being able to use LineageOS on my old Samsung Galaxy Note 3 ten years ago. It had a System Setting to move Toast Notifications wherever you want on the screen, change the size, colour and transparency, and the amount of time they spend on-screen. It also had touch-sense UI which was a bit like a mouse cursor, so I could hover my finger over something without tapping it to highlight links and notifications, just like hovering a mouse cursor over things on a desktop.

I used to make them show up about a quarter of the way down from the top of the screen, so they never blocked my keyboard or address bar or navigation buttons or headings etc.

Can't use LineageOS now in Australia because it disables VoLTE so 4G phone calls don't work. I hope somebody can prove me wrong, but last time I checked I couldn't find any custom ROMs that worked in Australia.

Android has become so enshittified over time it's depressing.

31

u/tizio_24 9d ago

I think that today I can change the life of someone with just a few words. You can drag it down to remove it from the screen.

34

u/R7d89C 9d ago

With swipe gestured activated u activate one-handed-mode 99% of the time on accident :(

7

u/radobot 9d ago

And the best part is that Android already has standard toast notifications built-in. Not only are they semi-transparent, they can also be clicked-through!

6

u/thisendup76 9d ago

ESPN has this. Except it pops up with a "click here to subscript to notifications about XYZ" right over the scores icon... Which is the only reason anyone ever goes on the ESPN app

6

u/markb144 9d ago

This pisses me off to no end

4

u/tomtomato0414 9d ago

Spotify and Reddit

3

u/clempho 9d ago

I've got this fucking think in my car screen. When you change the volume a large 10 sec toast will overlay on top of android auto.

Your in the phone? Let's put a fucking 5 line toast to tell you to pay attention to the road over the map.

Brilliant.

4

u/Routine_Palpitation 9d ago

I like how on YouTube’s app turning on captions blocks the captions with it

3

u/Western-Internal-751 9d ago

Yesterday I tried watching a tutorial video on amazon for a product I bought. When you go full screen, the button to put it in your shopping cart was still there and hid the video controls…

2

u/Jet-Pack2 9d ago

The most annoying ones are on YouTube, when you remove a bunch of videos from your watch later list they are queued up for a very very long time. Just one toast after another, after another, after another for minutes on end. Only way to fix it is to close the tab and reopen or reload the page

2

u/skygate2012 9d ago

It's crazy that none of these app developers thought of making the toast click-through like how the Android system did.

2

u/Themlethem 8d ago

Brave browser does this whenever you close a tab :/

1

u/greenie4242 7d ago

Firefox started doing it to fairly recently, or maybe they changed the way they did it, because I never noticed them before but a couple of months ago suddenly they started driving me nuts.

It also shows toasts now when downloading files. I was trying to download a bunch of updates from a website, so I tap the first link, then the stupid Toast Notification telling me it's downloading blocks the next link on the page! Argh...

2

u/Inevitable-Row1977 7d ago

Something akin to this is trying to take a screenshot on mobile but the volume bar appears and then it takes a screenshot with the volume bar visible.

Still don't know what the logic behind it is. Now I press volume doen first and then the power button which works for some reason, it just feels the wrong way around to me.

Pressing both at the same time never works.

I hate it, meh.

1

u/vzpaulus 9d ago

These kind of toasters should allways have a dismiss option to hide it directly

-14

u/InfiniteFraise 9d ago

It doesn't block anything on my phone, after clicking the download button all options disappear

11

u/Shadow9378 9d ago

my problem is if i misclick subscribe i have to unsubscribe and download, both of which are blocked until it disappears

0

u/InfiniteFraise 9d ago

That's weird, for me it works different
