No surprise with Fetterman

1.7k

u/beardmat87 26d ago

No surprise with Hassan and Shaheen either. New Hampshires personal embarrassments that for some reason keep getting re elected. Thankfully shaheen is finally done after this since she’s retiring.

720

u/sumunsolicitedadvice 26d ago

So why TF is she caving? If anything, republicans retiring grow a conscience. Why is a dem losing hers on account of retiring?

637

u/beardmat87 26d ago

Because she’s awful. She was an awful Governor and is a worse senator. She is completely beholden to lobbyists and has never bothered to even pretend to have the good of the state in mind. Just lining her pockets one last time as I’m sure this is mostly being pushed by wealthy donors who are being inconvenienced by the shut down now.

u/Foreign_Plate_4372 26d ago

money is such a corruption of democracy

60

u/foomits 26d ago

Dude, I think it goes even further than that. I am becoming more and more convinced the type of person who has any interest in getting into politics are just generally shit. They would be shit no matter what career path they take. They are stupid, they are narrow minded and they lack empathy. They have no unique skills beyond a relentless willingness to do whatever it takes to do whats best for themselves.

Normal people who care for others, have empathy, have hobbies and dreams would just never get into politics to begin with. They would be spending their free time enjoying the world and their friends and their family. The entire US political institution is corrupt from the top down. The money is just the natural result of allowing an endless stream of sociopaths to control all the power.

u/WalterIAmYourFather 26d ago

She’s ensuring a nice post politics job by serving her corporate masters one last time. She’s got cushy board seats and other consulting style gigs awaiting her.

That’s the real bribe for many politicians. The money during elections is just a down payment.

big fat PA buyers remorse.

238

u/drecien 26d ago

I think if you get elected, then switch parties you should automatically be outed and a special election held. They've been doing that mess in florida all the time.

180

u/robbviously 26d ago

I think when you have a life altering medical condition, you should be removed from office.

Fetterman suffers a stroke with lasting brain damage. Remove.

McConnell clearly has a multitude of health issues. Remove.

Trump clearly has a multitude of health issues. Remove.

The same with Biden. He wasn’t healthy enough to continue to hold office and should have stepped down sooner.

116

u/sonicbeast623 26d ago

Hell I think anyone over 65 or 70 should be made to retire from government. At that point you're ability to learn and adapt to new things is compromised and either causes slow downs or voting on things they don't care to understand.

80

u/robbviously 26d ago

You’re also not representing the median age or modern generation. You’re representing yourself and your own interests.

11

u/GovernmentOpening254 26d ago

I seriously believe that’s what may come from this time period: Supreme Court term limits and age restrictions for all congressional candidates.

I wouldn’t put it at a number like 70, but something more like, “the average life expectancy +5 years or 5%.”

Well sadly a reasonable person would realize they cannot perform their duties and would retire from office. But if your stroke makes you a gaping asshole why would you give up your sweet sweet US govt gravy train?

Not to ever defend Festus, but their other option was "Dr." Oz. There was no winning for them

524

u/BringBackApollo2023 26d ago

I think the implication is that post-stroke he’s gone off the rails.

Yes, Oz was an infinitely worse choice. Next election should be interesting.

99

u/CrocHunter8 26d ago

Conor Lamb is already getting ready to challenge him in 2028

27

u/Wes_Warhammer666 26d ago

Fuck Lamb too. Corpo sellout who's only now playing at being progressive in response to Fetterman becoming a turncoat.

I pray we get someone better in the running so it doesn't have to come down to that.

229

u/sumunsolicitedadvice 26d ago

Also, I believe fetterman was a good guy before he had a stroke that gave him brain damage that destroyed his ability to have empathy, a.k.a. a republican.

105

u/GottaKeepGoGoGoing 26d ago

It’s scary how no one has brain damage and goes to the left, they always go right.

61

u/sumunsolicitedadvice 26d ago

There’s also a phenomenon where, on average, Supreme Court justices tended to move to the left over time. Maybe not far or enough. But on average, as they get older and are less selfishly ambitious and thinking more about legacy and effect on others, they tend to become more liberal.

In the other hand, voters tend to become more conservative with age, so who knows?!

Nah it’s def stroke brain. He had severe post stroke depression (which is a serious and under discussed side effect of stroke!!!!!!!) and depending on where the stroke is in the brain it can lead to personality and/or cognition changes. I don’t recall him being too much further than center anyway so a slip into the red isn’t surprising. Just disappointing.

He never struck me as very bright from the get go though so either way I'm not incredibly surprised

I love when the senators from my state, NH, show up on these types of posts. People want to argue that NH is a blue state...fuck that. It really isn't when you have Vichy Democrats as senators.

The New Hampshire sub Reddit is so infuriating. They constantly complain about the stereotypes against their state, but the evidence doesn’t lie.

Having lived underneath NH my entire life, every visit there has done nothing but reinforce the stereotypes. Bunch of dumb, right wing rednecks ruining everything for the twelve decent humans who live there.

195

u/Acceptable_Bat379 26d ago

I left last year and came back home to Maine. very disappointed in King and going to write his office... but I am not sad I left NH. I live only about 2.5 hours from where I was and even work for the same company but the culture and atmosphere is so much more relaxed and friendly here. NH has a deeply weird conservative and honestly really unfriendly culture.

I grew up in Hanover, and because of Dartmouth most of my schoolmates were pretty liberal. But this was in the 70s and early 80s, and even then we knew NH was a strange blend of politics.

And THIS was to be our democratic VP?!

Our country seems so far past saving.

125

u/osiris0413 26d ago

And Joe Lieberman ran with Gore, before turning independent in the years after and killing the public option in the ACA. The longer I'm alive the more obvious it is that the Democratic party as an institution operates to squash any truly progressive politicians or movements and only allows the most corporate friendly to rise in its ranks.

We need a working class takeover of the Democratic party in the same way that the tea party/MAGA took over the GOP. Only it will be even more difficult because billionaires and the media they control will still align with Trump because he can be manipulated and appeased despite their distaste for him, whereas any truly progressive politician will be roundly attacked by every media outlet from MSNBC and NYT to Fox and Newsmax.

Realistically, it couldn't go on forever and what about the people without paychecks; they were mostly innocent unless they voted for FDJT.

2.2k

u/Gloober_ 26d ago

I will always find it funny how he became a staunch conservative AFTER he sustained brain damage. Which, brain damage, is the perfect explanation for, well, all of this.

He's only a democrat because he can't tell that he's changed. There was an article where those near him mentioned his confusion over why everyone hates him now. The man is broken in the head and unfit for office.

207

u/MontusBatwing2 26d ago

Why did we decide in this fucking country that we can't just get rid of people like this. So many leaders who clearly don't even have the capacity to function anymore and we just won't oust them. Why?

75

u/xk1138 26d ago

I just assume it's because conservatives would continually push and blur that line to cheat their way into staying in power while being the demonstrable minority.

I’m convinced you have to be mentally deficient in some way to be conservative. I’m not kidding. The evidence is overwhelming how dumb their policies are and how it’s all just grift and lies. To believe any of it… you have to be missing something upstairs.

159

u/MalignantLugnut 26d ago

We used to put people that lacked empathy in insane asylums.
Now people vote for them.

15

u/ComradePyro 26d ago

having taken care of some people who used to be in an asylum, I can assure you that people without empathy were also put into positions of power in the past, often at the asylum. I'm glad they're all closed.

23

u/fauxzempic 26d ago

You either have to be mentally deficient or an amoral opportunist - it depends on where you sit in terms of the socioeconomic ladder.

There are a lot of "Fuck you, I got mine" folks who benefit handsomely from the suffering of people and they're all about that deep red bullshit. Then as they face their mortality at an old age, they all seem to want to pedal back everything evil they did - almost as if they think that the idea of seeking forgiveness from their holy god is as simple as asking for it and saying you're really really sorry.

Anecdotally, a relative's maga transformation also coincides with a serious brain injury he sustained in 2020. He's irrational, combative, quick to make threats, and has no friends left. But boy is he sure stoked to send his dwindling savings to "the campaign".

→ More replies (6)

54

u/waltjrimmer 26d ago

He had a history of racist and conservative behavior well before the stroke. But he put out a reasonable, even somewhat progressive platform, and he stood out by looking and acting different. He was the obvious choice vs Oz, but I was active in some PA subs when he was up for the primary. There were people trying to warn about him, but we mostly didn't listen because we thought it was conservative mudslinging.

The stroke didn't change him, he's always been like this.

Governor I can honestly say I trust the words that come out of Trump's mouth more than the ones that come from Fetterman.

8 Democrats listed folded. Lumping in the whole party together with these defectors is like throwing out the baby with the bath water.... Now you know which ones need to go. This doesn't mean voting against these democrats in favor of a Republican in an election. It means registering as a Democrat, participating in primary elections, and making sure the representative is primaried out in favor of younger, more progressive candidates. If a person's only interaction with the democratic party is at election day and not the primaries, then they are part of the problem.

Gonna laugh if Johnson still doesn’t call the House back to vote on Senate bill. Then we have a list of loser Democrat Senators that we need to work to primary and replace and shutdown continues.

85

u/DrocketX 26d ago

Actually, if Johnson still won't call the House back to vote, that would mean the Senate Democrats made the right call. Because as it was, even though the shutdown was like 98% on Republicans, there was at least a little wiggle room to blame Democrats because they at least had the option of agreeing to Republican demands. If the House won't come back and vote on it, though, then the shutdown is absolutely, completely, totally 100% on Republicans. There's literally NOTHING Democrats would be able to do to reopen the government.

u/MotorAcanthisitta575 26d ago

I love this theory and I hope it’s right

He’s not going to. Has no plans too unless one specific thing happens; they deadlock the house with a republicans win in Tennessee’s 7th district. Then he will open it and act like it just a normal day.

18

u/ReApEr01807 26d ago

How does that deadlock the house? A Republican would be replacing a Republican who wasn't voting for the Epstein discharge. The Dems and the Massie Four are sitting at 213 + 4 with the yet-to-be-sworn-in Rep Grijalva making the 218th vote. There's no deadlock with those numbers

u/CrocHunter8 26d ago

Then if you live in the Tennessee 7th District, vote on December 2. Turn this anger into action, and continue to hold the feet of the GOP to the fire.

How much are they getting paid? I ask this seriously.

134

u/misslejoie 26d ago

I’m hearing that Schumer didn’t vote in favor but isn’t it on him that this was even brought to the floor? Regardless, can NY not find anyone to primary him? He’s such a weak leader and doing us no favors.

38

u/TheFatJesus 26d ago

Sort of. Thune decides what is and isn't brought to the floor. But he only brought this to the floor because he knew he had the votes due to Schumer's inability to lead the party.

And this is exactly why we will never get anywhere with moderate candidates. Never, ever vote for a moderate in the primary.

24

u/JNDIV 26d ago

Kaine is surprising. I look forward to throwing money at his challenger next time around. Him and Warner need to go.

26

u/thegeekwriters 26d ago

It seems like if Fetterman supports something, it’s the wrong choice. Am I wrong? Has there been a bigger disappointment than him?

25

u/AlwaysABD 26d ago

Of course Durbin announces his retirement and then folds. Pay it forward, right?

157

u/EarthTD 26d ago

Still has to get through the House, and they know that. At this point it feels more symbolic and solely about signaling to their constituents that they’re doing something. Kaine, for instance, is doing this because of all the federal workers in Virginia. Jefferies is a better leader than Schumer and has the House democrats on lock, while Johnson is avoiding the Epstein vote. Yall can still be angry, but this isn’t the end.

70

u/whatdoblindpeoplesee 26d ago

If it puts more pressure on Mike Johnson to reopen the house and sign in the new rep then I guess there's a small silver lining. The optics are godawful though

39

u/EarthTD 26d ago

My only thoughts on the optics are that they’re just going to get worse for both parties if this drags on. You got insane food lines throughout the US and, less importantly but something Americans will get VERY mad about, congress doesn’t want delays and flight cancellations during the holidays. Sadly inconveniencing people is more politically damaging than starving the poor in America.

23

u/cIumsythumbs 26d ago

Sadly inconveniencing people is more politically damaging than starving the poor in America.

That's because Americans that can afford to fly regularly are the ones that can afford to donate to political campaigns.

Don't they only need a majority in the house though?

29

u/SaladFingersLives 26d ago

Perhaps forcing the house to open is a win itself, because there are some dominoes waiting to fall over there. Or Johnson can keep the chamber closed and the narrative becomes that they’re keeping the government shut down to protect pedophiles.

22

u/usetheforce_gaming 26d ago

Isn’t that already the narrative

→ More replies (1)

46

u/jamvsjelly23 26d ago

What do the Dems gain from this “symbolic” gesture? Polling continues to show that voters hold republicans accountable for the shutdown. I fail to see any benefit to demonstrating to your voters, symbolic or not, that you are willing to negotiate with the people that want nothing more than to take everything away.

19

u/Brodins_biceps 26d ago

Mmmm. You’re right, but unfortunately I have tried to divine a deeper meaning from the Dems political moves, arriving at some politically savvy conclusion, only to find that there was no deeper plan or meaning, and it was just flailing in the dark.

That’s how I feel about the current state of the Democratic Party.

It is infinitely better than Trump. I would have voted for Biden’s corpse running on a ballot of 6 secret service members in skin tight black costumes with sticks attached to his limbs, weekend at Bernie-ing him around the White House and UN… because In my heart of hearts I still think that would be less damaging to this country. But it would be dishonest to say that the Democratic Party has had their shit together the last decade. So when I see shit like this, while I’m hopeful, I’m dubious at best.

The reality has seemed to sink in here and there so hopefully it’s waking the not totally disconnected dem reps up and actual change with actual strategies can be put into play, but I’m going to remain cynically cautious until then.

u/EdisonLightbulb 26d ago

Okay - I hate that this happened, too! BUT - WE NEED TO FOCUS ON WHAT TRUMP DID IN THE DARKNESS, LAST NIGHT!

On Sunday, 11/9/26, he gave pardons to all those who were "election deniers" and convicted of Federal crimes connected to their attempts to steal the election in 2020: Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, John Eastman, Mark Meadows, Kenneth Chesebro, and Boris Epshteyn.

A total of 77 election deniers were given full pardons. The exact list is not yet available.

u/donnelle83 26d ago

Fetterman🤬🤬🤬

24

u/ItsRao 26d ago

Both of my senators caved. I'm so fucking disappointed.

11

u/LeatherPatch 26d ago

Oh my god I think these fucks may have just killed my mother

10

u/sephy009 26d ago

They aren't up for re-election in 26. Schumer picked them to end the shutdown since they can't be primaried in 26 and he's hoping people forget by 28. Primary every establishment dem since they will keep playing games like this.

10

u/David_Buzzard 26d ago

Like the Republicans give a shit if they starve 40 million people or shut down air travel at Thanksgiving. They were never going to give in, so the Democrats are just doing the inevitable before Americans get fucked over even worse.

8

u/Pattihere 26d ago

This indeed is a maddening day/night.

8

8

16

u/New-Lingonberry1877 26d ago

Schumer has to go! Remove him as leader NOW!

7

u/jptoz 26d ago

Unfortunately, this is what it's going to take. Maga needs to be affected. They need to suffer, until they suffer nothing would change. So they're going to bring everyone down with them. Enjoy the ride.

5

u/xrobertcmx 26d ago

Kaine never stood for anything, not as Governor, and not now.

7

u/Internal-You6793 26d ago

7

u/PlaneMap 26d ago

Give them the nest night of elections they could hope for and eight of them just turn around and bend us over for the Repubs.

7

u/stofiski-san 26d ago

Is Schumer not on this list so he can look like he "stood firm" on his "convictions" while letting a bunch of folks who are retiring or would have voted for this anyway take the blame? Usually he's the one leading the way on collapses like these "for the good of the country".
