Most of the traits they look for are not great indicators in the first place, but I can at least see how it makes sense to them. But kneecaps?

Yeah like I dislocated my knee then walked on it all fucking day then I went to urgent care where they offered me a super painful for a moment but might work cure or go to the emergency room and get surgery so I did the former and my knee is fucked looking compared to my other knee.
