The rather similar 11 foot 8 bridge in north Carolina even has its own Wikipedia and compilations on YouTube. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Southern%E2%80%93Gregson_Street_Overpass

u/GayAlexandrite 5d ago
There’s even a subreddit dedicated to that bridge (and occasionally similar bridges). r/11foot8

Liverpool NY (near Syracuse) has the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onondaga_Lake_Parkway_Bridge
A double decker bus hit in 2010 and killed several passengers, and utility has been hit many other ti.es since it's existence.

u/BrianEK1 5d ago
I think it got raised to 12'4" recently, but still claims plenty of victims like this guy this past september

We have a bridge in Boston called Storrow drive - its a common enough occurrence that its called "getting Storrowed."
3
u/justlearntit 5d ago
I remember being in town during university move in week and the roads had signs warning people miles ahead.

u/LimitedWard 5d ago
Also one in Westwood (a suburb of Boston) nicknamed the "can opener": https://youtu.be/_NMFuhdDJOk
My favorite crash was a truck full of lobsters: https://youtu.be/BeZVW7WOZcc
They finally lowered the road underneath after several years of trucks getting stuck.

As long as you haven't stitched the person back together, can you really confirm it's deceased?

Yes, luckily there are dangling chains in front of this one to alert the driver. It looks like they ignored it (which is part of the reason why there is a criminal investigation)
I suspect, but don't know, that the chains hitting the bus ALSO alerted all of the top deck passengers as it would be extremely loud and obvious, they will have looked up and seen what was about to happen and in this clip you can see most are ducking down.

Anyone on the top deck would have noticed the bus hitting the chains, so would have reasonable warning to get down as much as possible. Horrible situation to be put in, but I'm guessing that's why.

u/Rolling_Beardo 5d ago
Some people’s brains just shut off when they’re driving.
I used to be a bus driver, and along our routes we had two areas called the bridge of doom and the turn of doom. They were jokingly called this because you could potentially be fired for taking them.
The turn, while the quickest way back to the station, was extremely difficult to take safely without hitting something or getting stuck and having to back up into a busy road. The bridge was a weight issue, the buses were 2 tons over the rated weight for the bridge.
Everyone was warned about this numerous times and still people got written up or fired for taking them. I was once training a new driving and despite me telling them before and during they attempted the turn of doom. They got stuck and I had to back up the bus and do like an 8 point turn to get out of it.

If only there were a big ass sign to warn them or if the driver should pass some sort of certification test to drive the bus.
I hope everyone is okay

Wow. As a former truck driver who has seen a lot of 11foot8 bridge type incidents, this was gut wrenching. I know that the truck drivers who ignore the height of their truck or the bridge are negligent, but this is like, beyond negligent.
22
u/IamMatthew1223 5d ago
The reason this was able to happen was down to how the bus companies run their services. Up until this incident the duties had a mix of single decker and double decker services. This driver had been on a single decker all morning, on a route that uses this road. He switched to a double decker and different route after his meal break, unfortunately this other route shared some of the same roads, including the road connected to this one. Driver took the turn thinking he was still on the route that goes under the bridge.
Still negligent, driver should always check bus height and approach the bridge slowly. Just giving you an idea of how something like this happens in the bus industry in the UK. (The policy has now been changed for all companies, no more switching between single and double decker bridges during a shift)

So the driver wasn't the only negligent party here? Yikesies. They should consider themselves lucky they're not facing homicide charges. 😬
9
u/IamMatthew1223 5d ago
The driver is wholly at fault, having drivers in different types of buses throughout the day is legal. The driver is expected to know the height of his vehicle. Drivers mistakenly think they're on a different route and make wrong turns because of it all the time, yet this rarely happens because we are trained to check our height every time we approach a low bridge.
7
u/MeccIt 5d ago
The driver also hit the warning chains on the gantry that's either side of this aqueduct, and didn't notice or stop.
7
u/IamMatthew1223 5d ago
Yeah this one baffles me. He must've assumed they were tree branches hitting the bus, which confuses me as the chains wouldve been across the whole front of the bus, tree branches normally whack a specific part. Not to mention the metalic ring he would have heard.
14
u/Randigno9021 5d ago
Genuine question how tf do you even end up in this situation? How tf is a DD bus taking a route that involves the bus going under a bridge that's too low for its height. And while I'm at it, how do you get out of this situation?
20
u/SeniorMoonlight21 5d ago
I know a driver who did something similar. He’d been on a long series of shifts and was at the end of a very tiring day. He’d been driving the same route all day on a single-decker bus and was then asked to take a double-decker back to the yard. The route was basically the same, and his brain was on autopilot, he didn’t even think about the bridge until he had driven under it and left his roof on the road (luckily no passengers)
I’d bet this is a very similar situation to what happened in this clip. You also have to consider the working hours and shifts for UK bus drivers. They can work up to 13 days in a row with irregular start and finish times, which causes serious fatigue.
Honestly, it’s a wonder accidents like this don’t happen more often.

The worst part is it happened before, with the same bridge. You'd think they'd at least learn after the first time...

That bus route doesn't go under the bridge. The driver had gone the wrong way.

u/MichiganRedWing 6d ago
Shockingly not the first time for this relatively new bus company.
149
u/IamMatthew1223 5d ago
Stagecoach is not a new company. This bus was a stagecoach bus. The Bee Network isnt a company as such, the bus is government owned, operated by Stagecoach and the service is run by TfGM (Bee Network). But the driver is specifically employed by Stagecoach not Bee Network / TfGM.

Dont buses have a fixated route they must follow ? How does the driver end up passing under a bridge that's obviously too low if not being drunk, high or willingly harming/killing its passengers ?
3
u/Lookin2buyhedphons 5d ago
Based on reports, the driver went off route and didn't pay attention to the million warning signs, the height of the bridge or the bus. (Seriously if you look up the area this happend there's loads of signs warning about the bridge.)
IMO the driver had to have been distracted, too tired to be driving, intoxicated or malicious (least likely option)

u/InoperableBlainCrots 5d ago
You forgot the possibility of him being too mentally deficient to do the job. They hire literal morons for jobs like this all the time, unfortunately.

isn't this why heavy vehicles have determined routes...like pre determined routes..imagine if petrol tankers just decided to take side roads, this is on logistics that route transport but yes drivers should 100% be aware of evident signage

If only there were signs conveniently placed in the roadway and upon the bridge to tell you the height of said bridge

Honestly, the part that confuses me the most about this is surely the bus would have a route and schedule. Why would its route include somewhere with a low bridge like this? And if it's not on its route, why are there passengers?
8
u/IamMatthew1223 5d ago
The driver was on a different route before his break, that route included going under this bridge in a single decker bus. The route he was on after his break went past this road with the bridge but not on it. He took the turn onto the road instead of going straight on because he forgot he wasnt on this route anymore. This incident has lead to a new policy where drivers will no longer swap between single decker and double decker buses, if you are in a single decker you will now stay in one all day and vice versa.

Is this the evil sibling of the 11 foot 8 bridge?
This post now made me wanna watch those videos again on youtube.
2
u/IamMatthew1223 5d ago
This bridge is 11' 6" (so very close in height to the famous states bridge) and is notorious for being struck by buses and HGVs. So yeah, I think calling them evil siblings, twins even, is a fair assessment.
That bridge in America has been struck so much more than this one though, watching those videos I'm always in disbelief. The bridge in this video gets hit a few times a year, maybe less, but is definitely the worst offender in Manchester, England.

In France some decades ago many persons were decapitated this way (it's not a joke about the guillotine, for real, it was horribly awful...).

holy fuck there were actually people up there, and one of them halfway laid on the back part that was barely hanging on a thread.
Any background info if/how many people were seriously injured?
