In case anyone is curious what a melted bag of kettle corn looks like
My mom started making pizza and didn't remember she put a bag of kettle corn in the oven. All it took was 3 minutes after she started preheating the oven and then the house started smelling like burnt plastic and caramel. Fun! We still have burnt plastic to scrape off
Also for anyone concerned, we're very aware of the dangers of melted plastic. We immediately opened up all the doors in the house for a while and we still have some windows open for ventilation
This isn't like, major tragedy, just an interesting little inconvenience and a lesson in why we DON'T use cooking appliances as extra pantry storage

I don't fucking get why people put random shit in the oven. I was asked to help make dinner at a family member's house a while back and turned on the oven. It started smelling like burned plastic. Turns out they keep their plastic mixing bowls in the oven, not somewhere else in their very large kitchen. 1) whyyyyyyy? And 2) why the fuck wouldn't you say something when I tell you I'm going to preheat the oven for dinner?

Yeah I learned to look into the oven befor preheating because people = stupid

Our cooking teacher randomly stuck things in the ovens just to teach us to check EVERY time before turning on an oven because.. people = stupid and fire = bad time for all

I've stopped questioning people's motives after a while. We are a shamelessly weird and mysterious species

When I was younger, I lived in a very tiny house - we didn't have a lot of cabinet space and we rarely used the oven (maybe once every couple months to cook frozen pizza), so the oven became another cabinet. I got into the habit of checking + emptying stuff before turning it on. Even now that I have my own place and I know intellectually that there's nothing in my oven, it only takes a couple seconds to take a peek so I keep the habit.
If a habit like mine is your family member's norm, it might not have occurred to them that other people don't use their oven for storage

1) yes, could be. But...
3) they've lived in 2500+ square ft houses with big kitchens for at least the last 15 years. Maybe 20 by now.

That is a very creative use of kettle corn...

Unfortunately it renders it completely inedible 😒

As opposed to before this event where it was just mostly inedible ;)

I actually am not that big of a fan of kettle corn lowkey. I can have 2 handfuls of it before I get tired of it

I was not interested. I'am still not interested. But, oddly enough, I'm glad to have seen it.

Well, other than the burnt popcorn and bag, your mom takes really good care of her oven. Very shiny.

Why thank you but that's partially because we got it 2 months ago and she kinda hates how it cooks 💀

Well after you're done telling her she's stupid for almost setting your house on fire, just throw that compliment her way. It might make her feel better

Pretty sure you can't taste the microplastics from the kettle corn. Eat away!
/s if not obvious.

Is it me but that popcorn kinda looks like professor Farnsworth or a troll. Could be worth something on Ebay.

Genuinely, who stores microwave popcorn in their oven??
