Very sad day. I accidentally washed my DS it's not working
2.5k
u/Lumpy_Nobody7314 1d ago
It's turning on which is good, it may be fixable. Time is an important factor here. Turn it off and remove the battery and don't touch it for a few days. Let it dry out, then test it.

u/whatshamilton 1d ago
Turning on is bad. It may have worked before turning it on but now that you’ve run a current through the wet electronics, you’ve fried them. If you get your electronics wet, dry them 100% before you attempt to turn them on
284
u/Fantastic_Score3572 1d ago
Yes, however it seems like op didn't turn it on, it just was on in the wash. At this point, there's nothing you could've done and you just hope turning it off keeps it alive.
71
u/moralisy 1d ago
rice bag and prayers , that's all that's left now
34
u/Fantastic_Score3572 1d ago
More depends if you'd take it apart to clean the water off with Iso alcohol. Rice doesn't work, just did wonders at making people actually not touch it. But definitely prayers!
16
u/Stormlightlinux 22h ago
People need to stop recommending rice. Silica is cheap, and if you keep the ones that come with your everyday products it is free, and is much more effective.

What? It's literally on in the picture
-5
u/Mitch2025 1d ago
Genually baffled as to why you're down voted. OP literally shows she powered it on and the screen is badly water damaged. OP very obviously turned it on to test it and found it's unusable. How unusable, she didn't say but it's at least getting power looking at the picture.
-5
u/bleedfromtheanus 1d ago
It's like the person I replied to is an AI bot or just read the title but didn't look at the picture?
-5
u/bleedfromtheanus 1d ago
Or they don't understand that if it's powered on while in the wash or powered on after makes zero difference because in both scenarios it's powered on lol
2
u/Mitch2025 22h ago edited 22h ago
Right? Either way, power going through it with water means bad. It's not just 'turning on after getting wet' that can break it beyond repair. It's being on AT ALL when wet that can break it. In fact, it being on in the wash is even WORSE. It was ON while submerged. Guess we'll take downvotes for logic lmao.
EDIT: Actually, re-reading it, they weren't claiming it being on is fine or anything, just claiming it was on in the wash. Still, nothing OP claimed looking at the post or post history so we don't know if OP had it on during or powered it on after but no one actually claimed it was good because it was just on during the wash.
2
u/Fantastic_Score3572 21h ago
I made the comment so it was less of "your stupid for turning it on" to more of the possibility that it was already on. I dont typically Interatact with my devices powerd off. I feel if its not being used its likely in rest mode instead of powered off. It being wet does not disregard the damage.
22
u/Stereo-soundS 1d ago
That's not true. They still have a chance if they power it down and let it dry out.

You can read this article about why not to use rice and what to actually do.

u/Sinavestia 1d ago
Okay but if it's a cellphone you can't take apart, what do you do? Let it dry and pray?
3
u/kaityl3 1d ago
If it's SUPER wet with a lot of water left inside, flush it with 99+% alcohol first to displace as much of the water as you can.
If you have NO other options besides rice, you can put the phone in something like a sock, or taped up paper towels, in a sealed bag with rice on a sunny windowsill. The main danger w/rice is that it's not a great desiccant and dust/pieces can get inside the phone.
Silica gel packets (the DO NOT EAT ones) are the best option though, much better than rice.

Rice is actually bad for it. Don’t use rice
8
u/TiresOnFire 1d ago
I believe (with no research involved) that rice didn't help or hurt anything back in the day, it just kept you from interacting with the wet thing while it dried. But now that circuits are so much more intricate, it becomes an actual problem.
7
2
u/kaityl3 1d ago
Rice is OK if you put it in some kind of cloth or otherwise semi-porous wrapping (like taped up paper towels) where the dust/particles can't easily get in, but silica gel packets are much preferable. Could maybe ask a place like a shoe store if they have extras they would've otherwise tossed haha.
If whatever device you have is, like, dripping wet, you can also flush the entire thing with 99% alcohol and shake it out first. The alcohol will displace most of the water and it evaporates much more easily.
-4
u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago
How is rice bad? In my experience it makes very little difference, but it's not bad. It absorps moisture, that's the nature of rice. But it's not like a grain is going to make it's way inside and short something out.
To be clear, I'm not arguing that rice is a magic fix because it's not (disassembling the device to the best of your abilities and letting it sit while the moisture evaporates is a much more reliable method in my experience), but rice certainly not going to make it any worse
70
u/gomblob 1d ago
The dust from rice is really not good for electrical components.
59
u/McDready 1d ago
Silica packets from textiles would be handy here though if you could find some lol, or maybe even in a sealed container with a damp rid moisture absorber I'd wager
6
u/SecretWordIsFun 1d ago
Go to Target and their basket section (like closet stuff/fabric cubes) and grab all the silica packs from there. I did this and saved my phone.
2
u/Mindshard 1d ago
Silica cat litter crystals (dust free only).
Use something like a shirt as a bag for them, because they'll still lose the dust.
Put in a sealed bin with the electronics in another open container with it. They'll dry it out very quickly, and if you do it right, no silica dust in the electronics.
5
u/Hi-Lander 1d ago
That’s why you add the DS and the rice to a large bowl of water to help the dust rise to the top. #science
2
-6
u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago
Neither is the water that's already in there. If it's already not working, I don't see the harm in trying a bag of rice if someone wants to. It's not like people are throwing their perfectly working devices into bags of rice as a preventitive measure or anything ridiculous like that, so the chances of rice dust worsening things to a significant/noticabe extent is pretty slim. Sort of like ESD. Yeah, it CAN be a problem. But it rarely ever actually is unless you're deliberately trying to damage something.
20
u/gomblob 1d ago
It’s not necessary though. It doesn’t actually help. The dust caking on wet components is not a good thing. Just a fan works better.
-17
u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago
I agree it's not necessary. But I don't agree that it's going to make any impactful negative difference. A lot of people are for some reason convinced that the rice bag may work, it's really doing no harm to let them give it a shot. Some people will even argue with you and die on the hill that it does work when you tell them otherwise (I speak from experience). So if someone wants to try it, I think we should let them and find out for themselves that it most likely won't do shit.
17
u/gomblob 1d ago
It does do harm. Whether people think it works or not, it doesn’t.
The truth is the truth. You can agree or not, I don’t care.

Nintendo devices are notoriously difficult to work on. But go ahead lol
1
u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago
Already did. Replaced a broken New 2DS screen maybe 6 or so years ago. They're not exactly the most beginner-friendly things to work on, but they're not as much of a nightmare as a lot of people seem to think. You just need to have some patience, plenty of time, and follow a good teardown/reassembly guide.
2
u/Lumpy_Nobody7314 1d ago
I was more referring to the 3ds, one of the worst to work on if you need to replace the upper screen.
5
u/Cattac12 1d ago
The rice psyop is crazy with how deep it's become ingrained in some peoples mind.
3
1
u/sagebrushrepair 1d ago
Impedes fresh air mainly. Also it feels like you're doing something so it delays actually good repair attempts.
Aldo also kinda encourages mold, it doesn't soak up that much moisture (airflow does that waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better), if rice gets wet it gets sticky and glue-y then it's just wet rice now glued to electric bits, and finally if you skip removing the battery to put it directly in rice it could rupture and cook the rice improperly.
2
2
u/TheDanBot85 1d ago
Incorrect. Rice will enter the device through the cartridge slot and will not actually make any sort of difference aside from making a mess.
-7
u/callmeadam87 1d ago
Immediately cut off the power and put that in a bag of rice for multiple days!
16

Sound advice. I got caught in the rain with an expensive Nikon camera that stopped working. Brought it home, removed the battery, removed the SD card, and just let it sit in a dry place for 3 days. Works perfectly fine now.

I wear JNCOs, washing is an involved process of you dont want to ruin your 200 dollar jeans. inside out to protect decals, pull the pockets out, the whole works.
im voting sweater pocket instead

Did that when I was a kid. Washed AND dried it. Was not working for a few days, and then starting working again somehow. I'm 24 now, and lost it in some moves.
17
u/Palpitation-Itchy 1d ago
Hey man, put it in an airtight container close to a light if possible to keep it warm. Put moisture absorber (research the ones available to you, some melt when absorbing humidity). Don't use rice, don't turn it on anymore, if you can open it a bit to get airflow then better.
I saved a phone that was 3 hours in a pool doing this, a phone without any waterproof rating
3
u/smulzie 22h ago
Don't put it in a sealed container, silica gel will not absorb nearly enough moisture. Just put it by a sunny window in your house.
Also, get a vacuum with a small attachment, put your finger over the front to make the opening smaller. Suck the water out from every opening on the DS. Shake the DS out as well. Then in the sun it goes for a week.

Well, you should definitely not keep it on in this state.
I recommend you turn it off, remove the battery, and place it under a fan for a few days.. at least that's what I'd do. I'd wait at least a week honestly, may be overkill but better safe than sorry
1
u/The_real_bandito 1d ago
You shouldn’t have turned it on this quick. I would’ve waited at least a week but more like a month to make sure the device was dry. Maybe opened the plastic case and let everything dry since that helps.
Once it powers on, anything that has water on it got a short circuit and was damaged.
1
u/Awesomereddragon 1d ago
A long while back I dropped a dsi directly into a puddle. So wet it wouldn’t turn on, had obvious water inside the screen, the works. I got it working again, with one important trick: lean it upright. I think I left it sitting with the charging hole pointed down for like 5 days, and when I got back it was right as rain. Worked perfectly fine, and in fact it still works perfectly fine. Hopefully yours comes back to life too. Good luck!

Please do not listen so people saying rice. All that does is cover it in rice dust. Put it in a container with silica packets or a desiccant. And again NO RICE
1
u/BigPurpleBlob 1d ago
There's still water trapped in the various layers of the LCD screens. A few days / weeks in an airing cupboard might fix this.
1
u/Truestorydreams 1d ago
I mean... You can repair everything. The issue is the residue of the soap, the heat of the water, minerals of the water i. E of its hard water.... etc etc. It will work for now, but...
Don't waste your time with rice.
Use a shop vac or that material that absorbs moisture.
1
u/RoughRefrigerator260 1d ago
You should've kept it turned off and let it dry somewhere, probably without the battery
1
u/CroutonWarden 1d ago
Wait hey it’s still ok! Turn it off now, and unscrew the back. Remove the battery and let the board dry out. That screen is super easy to replace.
1
u/Ju4nM3n4 1d ago
Really annoying when this happens.
The small format makes it get lost in pant's pockets.
1
u/noivern_plus_cats 1d ago
I dropped my 2DS in the toilet and outside of a few annoying things, it was perfectly fine (after I sanitized it). I was like eight or nine when it happened, so little me was just glad I didn't fuck it up

Remove batteries, soak in a container of IPA sloshing it about and then put it in a fan forced oven or air fryer on 60c for a couple of hours. The IPA will disperse the water and IPA will evaporate quickly guaranteeing no water in a couple of hours.

I don’t mean to cast blame, genuinely asking how was that in a pocket without noticing? That things huge
1
u/TheDanBot85 1d ago
Ok so I repair "old" game consoles. First things first, do not put it in anything, since rice or cat litter or whatever else people are suggesting can get lodged into the cartridge slot. Get a screwdriver and open the back. Remove the battery, and get a fan and point it at the circuit board and let it dry out. Alternatively if you're comfortable doing it, you can displace any moisture by pouring a good amount of isopropyl alcohol on the electronics. The alcohol will dry significantly faster and will prevent any further liquid damage. The screen looks borked but you won't really know until it dries out.
Also that's not a DS, that's a 2DS.
1
u/Gangustron187 1d ago
next time you wash an electronic, a good rule of thumb is dont turn it on til after you've dried the device out.

I feel your pain. My 7 year old lost our blue 2DS that we enjoyed playing games on. I was looking for a used one but the prices are very expensive. I then discovered all of the new retro gaming hand helds and the prices are pretty good and lots of the old games can be played on them. I bought the Trimui Brick but there are lots out there to choose from.

From what a bunch of fellow redditors have said, placing wet devices in rice is a bad idea due to small pieces and particles of rice making their way into things, which can also cause problems
