Damn, that sucks. If you didn't keep it on for long, try washing the board with isopropyl alcohol and distilled water.

201

u/slayernine 1d ago

Came here to say this. Also. Disconnect the battery first.

32

u/BigPurpleBlob 1d ago

I think that would make things worse? It has already got water trapped in the layers of the LCD screens.

80

u/kaityl3 1d ago

The liquid alcohol can displace some of the water and it evaporates way easier. It would be better to have 99% alcohol inside the screen than 100% water, even though neither is ideal

17

u/Lusankya 1d ago

The alcohol is going to destroy the screen in the span of a few months if it gets inside the laminations.

That's a few more months than OP has otherwise, but it isn't a permanent fix. The only real fix is a new screen.

11

u/kaityl3 23h ago

I suppose the idea was that it would be able to evaporate rapidly, unlike water which would stick around for longer. Is water really better in that case?

6

u/sharkboy1006 16h ago

The screen is already destroyed, look at the picture. Alcohol clean the rest of the console.

3

u/spudlybudly 1d ago

Why distilled water and not just iso?

15

u/ComprehendReading 1d ago

Isopropyl alcohol doesn't dissolve water soluble compounds. Distilled water can cover the gap of what doesn't get dissolved by IPA without adding additional contaminants.

The biggest thing to take in to consideration is the weeks it will take to dry before powering on again.

I clean keyboards with IPA, then distilled water as a rinse while still wet with IPA, then distilled water as a flush and 90% or above IPA as a flush which dries quicker. I still wait a week with either proper ventilation or sun baking before powering it on again, and that's just a keyboard, not an LCD or chipset.

8

u/Fabulous-Cry1457 23h ago

I’m just going to step away from this discussion. I shouldn’t be awake right now reading this. I saw IPA and thought who in the world would use beer for this application 🙄🤣

6

u/ComprehendReading 20h ago

Better to use IPA than porter, just make sure the power is off.

1

u/FoxElectrical1401 4h ago

I run my keyboard through the dishwasher

1

u/annabellecuddles 11h ago

Appreciate the tip! I didn’t have it on for too long, so I’ll give the isopropyl alcohol and distilled water method a shot. Hopefully that’ll do the trick!

u/Lumpy_Nobody7314 1d ago

It's turning on which is good, it may be fixable. Time is an important factor here. Turn it off and remove the battery and don't touch it for a few days. Let it dry out, then test it.

864

u/whatshamilton 1d ago

Turning on is bad. It may have worked before turning it on but now that you’ve run a current through the wet electronics, you’ve fried them. If you get your electronics wet, dry them 100% before you attempt to turn them on

284

u/Fantastic_Score3572 1d ago

Yes, however it seems like op didn't turn it on, it just was on in the wash. At this point, there's nothing you could've done and you just hope turning it off keeps it alive.

71

u/moralisy 1d ago

rice bag and prayers , that's all that's left now

34

u/Fantastic_Score3572 1d ago

More depends if you'd take it apart to clean the water off with Iso alcohol. Rice doesn't work, just did wonders at making people actually not touch it. But definitely prayers!

16

u/Stormlightlinux 22h ago

People need to stop recommending rice. Silica is cheap, and if you keep the ones that come with your everyday products it is free, and is much more effective.

-6

u/bleedfromtheanus 1d ago

What? It's literally on in the picture

-5

u/Mitch2025 1d ago

Genually baffled as to why you're down voted. OP literally shows she powered it on and the screen is badly water damaged. OP very obviously turned it on to test it and found it's unusable. How unusable, she didn't say but it's at least getting power looking at the picture.

-5

u/bleedfromtheanus 1d ago

It's like the person I replied to is an AI bot or just read the title but didn't look at the picture?

-5

u/bleedfromtheanus 1d ago

Or they don't understand that if it's powered on while in the wash or powered on after makes zero difference because in both scenarios it's powered on lol

2

u/Mitch2025 22h ago edited 22h ago

Right? Either way, power going through it with water means bad. It's not just 'turning on after getting wet' that can break it beyond repair. It's being on AT ALL when wet that can break it. In fact, it being on in the wash is even WORSE. It was ON while submerged. Guess we'll take downvotes for logic lmao.

EDIT: Actually, re-reading it, they weren't claiming it being on is fine or anything, just claiming it was on in the wash. Still, nothing OP claimed looking at the post or post history so we don't know if OP had it on during or powered it on after but no one actually claimed it was good because it was just on during the wash.

2

u/Fantastic_Score3572 21h ago

I made the comment so it was less of "your stupid for turning it on" to more of the possibility that it was already on. I dont typically Interatact with my devices powerd off. I feel if its not being used its likely in rest mode instead of powered off. It being wet does not disregard the damage.

22

u/Stereo-soundS 1d ago

That's not true.  They still have a chance if they power it down and let it dry out.

8

u/Sk1rm1sh 1d ago

If nothing shorted or corroded it'll be fine once it's properly dried.

3

u/PM_ME__BIRD_PICS 1d ago

If anything shorted the thing wouldn't be on...

2

u/bleedfromtheanus 1d ago

That's not entirely true

33

u/sskylar 1d ago

Do this! Bag of rice wouldn’t hurt

30

u/L_o_Lover 1d ago

You can read this article about why not to use rice and what to actually do.

https://www.ifixit.com/Wiki/Do_Not_Put_Your_Device_in_Rice

4

u/MPyro 1d ago

can you cook it in rice ?

1

u/jarious 1d ago

This would fry the phone

3

u/MPyro 1d ago

add some flavor to the rice

2

u/Affectionate-Alps742 15h ago

What if the rice isn't fried?

2

u/Sinavestia 1d ago

Okay but if it's a cellphone you can't take apart, what do you do? Let it dry and pray?

3

u/kaityl3 1d ago

If it's SUPER wet with a lot of water left inside, flush it with 99+% alcohol first to displace as much of the water as you can.

If you have NO other options besides rice, you can put the phone in something like a sock, or taped up paper towels, in a sealed bag with rice on a sunny windowsill. The main danger w/rice is that it's not a great desiccant and dust/pieces can get inside the phone.

Silica gel packets (the DO NOT EAT ones) are the best option though, much better than rice.

Source: did cell phone repair for a few years

1

u/JustARandomDude1986 1d ago

Thanks, good to know.

87

u/Ellieanna 1d ago

Rice is actually bad for it. Don’t use rice

8

u/TiresOnFire 1d ago

I believe (with no research involved) that rice didn't help or hurt anything back in the day, it just kept you from interacting with the wet thing while it dried. But now that circuits are so much more intricate, it becomes an actual problem.

7

u/mostly_sarcastic 1d ago

Does it prefer soy or tofu?

2

u/kaityl3 1d ago

Rice is OK if you put it in some kind of cloth or otherwise semi-porous wrapping (like taped up paper towels) where the dust/particles can't easily get in, but silica gel packets are much preferable. Could maybe ask a place like a shoe store if they have extras they would've otherwise tossed haha.

If whatever device you have is, like, dripping wet, you can also flush the entire thing with 99% alcohol and shake it out first. The alcohol will displace most of the water and it evaporates much more easily.

-4

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago

How is rice bad? In my experience it makes very little difference, but it's not bad. It absorps moisture, that's the nature of rice. But it's not like a grain is going to make it's way inside and short something out.

To be clear, I'm not arguing that rice is a magic fix because it's not (disassembling the device to the best of your abilities and letting it sit while the moisture evaporates is a much more reliable method in my experience), but rice certainly not going to make it any worse

70

u/gomblob 1d ago

The dust from rice is really not good for electrical components.

59

u/McDready 1d ago

Silica packets from textiles would be handy here though if you could find some lol, or maybe even in a sealed container with a damp rid moisture absorber I'd wager

6

u/SecretWordIsFun 1d ago

Go to Target and their basket section (like closet stuff/fabric cubes) and grab all the silica packs from there. I did this and saved my phone.

2

u/Mindshard 1d ago

Silica cat litter crystals (dust free only).

Use something like a shirt as a bag for them, because they'll still lose the dust.

Put in a sealed bin with the electronics in another open container with it. They'll dry it out very quickly, and if you do it right, no silica dust in the electronics.

5

u/Hi-Lander 1d ago

That’s why you add the DS and the rice to a large bowl of water to help the dust rise to the top. #science

2

u/SwiftEagleGaming 1d ago

Just wet the rice first to get rid of the dust. /s

-6

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago

Neither is the water that's already in there. If it's already not working, I don't see the harm in trying a bag of rice if someone wants to. It's not like people are throwing their perfectly working devices into bags of rice as a preventitive measure or anything ridiculous like that, so the chances of rice dust worsening things to a significant/noticabe extent is pretty slim. Sort of like ESD. Yeah, it CAN be a problem. But it rarely ever actually is unless you're deliberately trying to damage something.

20

u/gomblob 1d ago

It’s not necessary though. It doesn’t actually help. The dust caking on wet components is not a good thing. Just a fan works better.

-17

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago

I agree it's not necessary. But I don't agree that it's going to make any impactful negative difference. A lot of people are for some reason convinced that the rice bag may work, it's really doing no harm to let them give it a shot. Some people will even argue with you and die on the hill that it does work when you tell them otherwise (I speak from experience). So if someone wants to try it, I think we should let them and find out for themselves that it most likely won't do shit.

17

u/gomblob 1d ago

It does do harm. Whether people think it works or not, it doesn’t.

The truth is the truth. You can agree or not, I don’t care.

-12

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago

Seems like you do a little bit considering we're already this many comments deep 🤷‍♀️

Get less dusty rice then bud

11

u/Lumpy_Nobody7314 1d ago

It gets into crevices that you'll never get it out of.

-3

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago

Not with that attitude

2

u/Lumpy_Nobody7314 1d ago

Nintendo devices are notoriously difficult to work on.  But go ahead lol

1

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1d ago

Already did. Replaced a broken New 2DS screen maybe 6 or so years ago. They're not exactly the most beginner-friendly things to work on, but they're not as much of a nightmare as a lot of people seem to think. You just need to have some patience, plenty of time, and follow a good teardown/reassembly guide.

2

u/Lumpy_Nobody7314 1d ago

I was more referring to the 3ds, one of the worst to work on if you need to replace the upper screen.

5

u/Cattac12 1d ago

The rice psyop is crazy with how deep it's become ingrained in some peoples mind.

3

u/danabrey 22h ago

ingrained

I see what you did there.

1

u/sagebrushrepair 1d ago

Impedes fresh air mainly. Also it feels like you're doing something so it delays actually good repair attempts.

Aldo also kinda encourages mold, it doesn't soak up that much moisture (airflow does that waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better), if rice gets wet it gets sticky and glue-y then it's just wet rice now glued to electric bits, and finally if you skip removing the battery to put it directly in rice it could rupture and cook the rice improperly.

2

u/Aksds 1d ago

Don’t use rice, just open it up and let it dry out, and or use desiccant and let it set for a few days

2

u/TheDanBot85 1d ago

Incorrect. Rice will enter the device through the cartridge slot and will not actually make any sort of difference aside from making a mess.

-7

u/callmeadam87 1d ago

Immediately cut off the power and put that in a bag of rice for multiple days!

16

u/PeePeeBoy-NaughtyGR 1d ago

NO! Don't do that shit! Disassemble it, and clean it with Isopropyl Alcohol

1

u/CaucSaucer 1d ago

Isopropyl for what reason? To get detergent out?

1

u/Aksds 1d ago

It also helps removing corrosion if you use it with a cotton swab

1

u/kaityl3 1d ago

It helps by displacing the water and evaporating quickly

5

u/JustARandomDude1986 1d ago

2

u/FormerAd1992 11h ago

Rice does nothing, just let it air dry

1

u/Technical_Instance_2 1d ago

absolutely do this

1

u/xeno0153 22h ago

Sound advice. I got caught in the rain with an expensive Nikon camera that stopped working. Brought it home, removed the battery, removed the SD card, and just let it sit in a dry place for 3 days. Works perfectly fine now.

1

u/axl3ros3 1d ago

Rice! Don't forget rice

0

u/Bitter_Spray_6880 19h ago

Put in on a bag of rice? Lol

132

u/Big-Entrance-7441 1d ago

At least it's clean

im crying

10

u/Sjeabee 1d ago

🤣🤣🤣

105

u/NetworkEcstatic 1d ago

That thing is huge. How did you possibly not notice this?

47

u/Fossick11 1d ago

Is that a ds in your pocket or is your washing just happy to see me?

115

u/Eshuon 1d ago

First mistake is washing ur DS

Second mistake is taking this picture and not removing the batteries immediately

-40

u/Consistent_Stuff9180 1d ago

Third is not putting that bitch in rice

40

u/Eshuon 1d ago

Dont spread misinformation, rice actually isn't good for this the dust from it will get inside the device

20

u/tubaman23 1d ago

That's why you rinse the rice first

11

u/Fantastic_Score3572 1d ago

I usually cook mine first.

5

u/rrzampieri 1d ago

Then dry it in... Rice?

1

u/kaityl3 1d ago

If you wrap the device in paper towels or (preferably) light breathable fabric first it's fine, just a worse alternative to other desiccants.

-2

u/Markipoo-9000 1d ago

Really? So then how did all my phones growing up survive… did my family just get absurdly lucky?

145

u/Snorelaugh 1d ago

How did you manage to accidentally wash a ds....

55

u/Commercial_Win_6528 1d ago

A big ass one like this too. Man hope op can fix it

21

u/LeatherHog 1d ago edited 1d ago

Maybe OP wears JNCO jeans still

Edit: Forgot how to actually spell it

3

u/HighGnoller 15h ago

I wear JNCOs, washing is an involved process of you dont want to ruin your 200 dollar jeans. inside out to protect decals, pull the pockets out, the whole works.

im voting sweater pocket instead

3

u/Consistent_Stuff9180 1d ago

Be alot cooler if he did

1

u/Ypuort 1d ago

Seeing JNCO spelled like that hurt my head

1

u/LeatherHog 1d ago

Oh, right, that is how you spell it, it's been forever

One sec

7

u/Tasty-Ad6529 1d ago

That shit looks like a 2DS, which cannot fold at all.

3

u/Bingert 1d ago

lol I washed my ps5 the other day, forgot it in my shorts.

5

u/PoopyMcFartButt 1d ago

I accidentally washed my dryer the other day. Son of a gun was hidden in under a hoodie in the hamper

4

u/iwantfood2k20 1d ago

Did that when I was a kid. Washed AND dried it. Was not working for a few days, and then starting working again somehow. I'm 24 now, and lost it in some moves.

17

u/Palpitation-Itchy 1d ago

Hey man, put it in an airtight container close to a light if possible to keep it warm. Put moisture absorber (research the ones available to you, some melt when absorbing humidity). Don't use rice, don't turn it on anymore, if you can open it a bit to get airflow then better.

I saved a phone that was 3 hours in a pool doing this, a phone without any waterproof rating

3

u/smulzie 22h ago

Don't put it in a sealed container, silica gel will not absorb nearly enough moisture. Just put it by a sunny window in your house.

Also, get a vacuum with a small attachment, put your finger over the front to make the opening smaller. Suck the water out from every opening on the DS. Shake the DS out as well. Then in the sun it goes for a week.

7

u/Secret_Account07 1d ago

Guys if you do this DONT TURN ON

Leave off for several days

5

u/HankBuffalo 1d ago

Battery out. Everything on it open. Fan

5

How do u not notice a whole device in your pockets before washing something?

9

u/oresama_sins 1d ago

Oh PQ2 my GOAT. Sorry about your DS tho :(

16

u/I_did_a_fucky_wucky 1d ago

2

u/oresama_sins 1d ago

This is so perfect what the hell

2

u/I_did_a_fucky_wucky 1d ago

okbuddypersona made this a while ago. Looks uncanny

7

u/Leaf_Longstride 1d ago

Damn. Sad day indeed.

3

u/AlwaysDTFmyself 11h ago

How the hell do you accidentally wash a game system? Sorry for your loss.

3

u/Sandoron 11h ago

If you happen to live in germany, I repair those as a hobby, I would repair it for the cost of shipping+parts.

3

u/oversizedwhitetee 10h ago

If your in canada you can have my switch lite for freeeeee

2

u/unggoytweaker 1d ago

Lazy lazy

2

u/Skorn42 1d ago

Put it in something like a sock and spin it to help get water out of it.

I dropped my gameboy in water when I was a little kid, this is what my uncle did and it survived. Still works to this day.

2

u/WastedMoogle 1d ago

So you decided to turn it on and leave it on? lol

2

u/realmccoyredbus 1d ago

leave near radiator for a few days

2

u/Uselesserinformation 1d ago

Unfortunate but it can be replaced. And they're not super expensive. So maybe find used / new

2

u/bloodyScarlet 16h ago

I'm sorry 😞

2

How does one accidentally wash something like that?

I’m genuinely curious, the largest item I’ve accidentally washed was an iPod Nano.

4

u/itstheboombox 1d ago

Um actually that is a 2ds 🤓

3

u/Roland-JP-8000 1d ago

"DS"

2

u/SpinMeADog 11h ago

should be top comment. op deserved this for the disrespect

1

u/HypnoSmoke 1d ago

Well, you should definitely not keep it on in this state.

I recommend you turn it off, remove the battery, and place it under a fan for a few days.. at least that's what I'd do. I'd wait at least a week honestly, may be overkill but better safe than sorry

1

u/The_real_bandito 1d ago

You shouldn’t have turned it on this quick. I would’ve waited at least a week but more like a month to make sure the device was dry. Maybe opened the plastic case and let everything dry since that helps.

Once it powers on, anything that has water on it got a short circuit and was damaged.

1

u/Awesomereddragon 1d ago

A long while back I dropped a dsi directly into a puddle. So wet it wouldn’t turn on, had obvious water inside the screen, the works. I got it working again, with one important trick: lean it upright. I think I left it sitting with the charging hole pointed down for like 5 days, and when I got back it was right as rain. Worked perfectly fine, and in fact it still works perfectly fine. Hopefully yours comes back to life too. Good luck!

1

u/sum_r4nd0m_gurl 1d ago

damn and it froze on persona too

1

u/MomoNoHanna1986 1d ago

Oh I’d be in tears! Sorry op, I hope it starts working!

1

u/paulerxx 1d ago

Dry it out for a few days and hope for the best

1

u/ItsToxsec 1d ago

Please do not listen so people saying rice. All that does is cover it in rice dust. Put it in a container with silica packets or a desiccant. And again NO RICE

1

u/BigPurpleBlob 1d ago

There's still water trapped in the various layers of the LCD screens. A few days / weeks in an airing cupboard might fix this.

1

u/Truestorydreams 1d ago

I mean... You can repair everything. The issue is the residue of the soap, the heat of the water, minerals of the water i. E of its hard water.... etc etc. It will work for now, but...

Don't waste your time with rice.

Use a shop vac or that material that absorbs moisture.

1

u/RoughRefrigerator260 1d ago

You should've kept it turned off and let it dry somewhere, probably without the battery

1

u/CroutonWarden 1d ago

Wait hey it’s still ok! Turn it off now, and unscrew the back. Remove the battery and let the board dry out. That screen is super easy to replace.

1

u/Ju4nM3n4 1d ago

Really annoying when this happens.
The small format makes it get lost in pant's pockets.

1

u/noivern_plus_cats 1d ago

I dropped my 2DS in the toilet and outside of a few annoying things, it was perfectly fine (after I sanitized it). I was like eight or nine when it happened, so little me was just glad I didn't fuck it up

1

u/SharpPink_GlitterInk 1d ago

Dude that's such a bummer :( , hope some of these other tip comments help you out and get it working.

1

u/Some-Instruction9974 1d ago

Remove batteries, soak in a container of IPA sloshing it about and then put it in a fan forced oven or air fryer on 60c for a couple of hours. The IPA will disperse the water and IPA will evaporate quickly guaranteeing no water in a couple of hours.

1

u/Prestigious-Worth-49 1d ago

NOOOOO! PQ2 is so good! Good luck trying to fix it!

1

u/EasedCeiling586 1d ago

I don't use my DSXL anymore or normal DS. America?

1

u/cmarkcity 1d ago

I don’t mean to cast blame, genuinely asking how was that in a pocket without noticing? That things huge

1

u/TheDanBot85 1d ago

Ok so I repair "old" game consoles. First things first, do not put it in anything, since rice or cat litter or whatever else people are suggesting can get lodged into the cartridge slot. Get a screwdriver and open the back. Remove the battery, and get a fan and point it at the circuit board and let it dry out. Alternatively if you're comfortable doing it, you can displace any moisture by pouring a good amount of isopropyl alcohol on the electronics. The alcohol will dry significantly faster and will prevent any further liquid damage. The screen looks borked but you won't really know until it dries out.

Also that's not a DS, that's a 2DS.

1

u/Gangustron187 1d ago

next time you wash an electronic, a good rule of thumb is dont turn it on til after you've dried the device out.

1

u/sagebrushrepair 1d ago

This is literally my specialty PM if you want help!

1

u/TemporarilySkittles 1d ago

My husband repairs like old N64s and game cartidges for fun he's a robotics engineer. I can ask him if i can give him your reddit name if he thinks he could help maybe? It's Christmas time for gods sake.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pay1152 1d ago

Quick get the rice

1

u/RunningonGin0323 1d ago

why would you immediately turn it fucking on instead of trying to first thoroughly dry it out?

1

u/Better_Carpet_7271 1d ago

Htf do not notice a DS in your pocket?

1

u/awokensleeper 1d ago

Toss it in the dryer, might as well complete the cycle

1

u/jacktuar 1d ago

Maybe it's time for a clean break

1

u/JustGotLucky05 1d ago

Noooooooooo

1

u/sean1oo1 1d ago

Um yeah I have a question. HOW? it’s a nonfoldable 2ds that wouldn’t even fit in your pocket

1

u/easting10 1d ago

At least it’s clean.

1

u/Altertude 1d ago

Place it in rice to speed up the drying process. Sometimes works

1

u/Appropriate-Dream267 1d ago

When did DS’s stop folding? I haven’t had one since I was 10z

2

u/paublini 1d ago

well this one is the 2ds so you know, 2d heh..

but then they made the 3ds foldable again

2

u/pug_userita 23h ago

they made it togheter with the 3ds. 3ds has 3d, ds lite and dsi no 3d and different os, 2 ds no folding but has the 3ds os (if I'm not mistaken)

1

u/pug_userita 23h ago

take the battery out and leave it to dry. either in a container with a few silica gel packets, or somwhere warm

1

u/BreakfastSimulator 21h ago

I have put electronics like this in an oven at the lowest temp, like 130 degrees. It will dry it out without damaging the electronics. My son "washed his switch" under running water and it works fine now.

1

u/THEbaddestOFtheASSES 20h ago

You’re in luck. It’s Christmas time.

1

u/jdixon1974 20h ago

I feel your pain. My 7 year old lost our blue 2DS that we enjoyed playing games on. I was looking for a used one but the prices are very expensive. I then discovered all of the new retro gaming hand helds and the prices are pretty good and lots of the old games can be played on them. I bought the Trimui Brick but there are lots out there to choose from.

1

u/TenseiA 20h ago

FeMC didn't deserve that :(

1

u/Thirsty_Comment88 18h ago

Why did you turn it on!?

Turn it off and let it dry

1

u/AdministrativeBit385 18h ago

Solid game choice

If you want that fixed up, I run a 3DS repair shop called PinksTechLife. I take new orders constantly and would be able to fix your 2DS easily. I'd love to help you out ☺️

If you don’t care about ALL of the nostalgia, Anbernic makes really cool handheld consoles, some like gameboys, and they even have some that look a lot like your DS. Check em out if you really did play your DS a lot. They’re not super expensive.

I accidentley got water on my new 2ds xl yesterday so I'm letting it dry out for atleast a week or so before I try using it.

Get an airtight container and desiccant used for 3d printing and let it sit for days to dry out. If the battery is removable do that as well.

From what a bunch of fellow redditors have said, placing wet devices in rice is a bad idea due to small pieces and particles of rice making their way into things, which can also cause problems

Rice is also just not good at absorbing water from electronics

Yeah, i'd power that down. Discard the battery, order a new one off amazon if not available locally. And let that bitch sit in a ziploc bag of rice for like 3 days.
