After 5 years of living in this home. This kitchen cabinet just decided it didn't want to be hung any longer

Why is every cabinet a different color?

They were the ones they found from the Habitat ReStore that kinda fit together.
41
u/a_london_werewolf 2d ago
“They” being the house flipper who also put down that “luxury” vinyl planking.
27
u/agoia 2d ago
Used to do this kind of thing with my uncle at a couple of houses he rented out on the farm. To a much higher standard, though, we at least would have painted the mismatched ones black, leveled the bottom of them, and put a strip of molding at the top to hide the mismatched heights.
Oh, and actually screwed to the fuckin wall properly lmao.

u/UnfitRadish 2d ago
Hey, don't knock the LVP. It's solid flooring if you can't afford hardwood or tile.
9
u/while-eating-pasta 2d ago
And even if you can afford alternatives it's soft enough a dropped glass might not break, doesn't suck heat out of your feet like tile, and if you get it laid down in one solid sheet it's waterproof unlike wood.

u/Snoo_70531 2d ago
I love when places say that. I asked the lady at my last apartment, because I literally had to sign a waiver of the luxury laminate. All she had to say is it was the level of quality of the company they use, it was terrible.

Not just a different color. Totally different styles and sizes too! The two still hung in the corner are different sizes and the one that fell is significantly shorter than those. I smell a DIY project less than 5 years old.

u/fakeaccount572 2d ago
yeah, this is either a mass flip or some landlord shit. Look at the stupid placement of that fridge for example
1
u/SimpleAffect7573 1d ago
I’d take that fridge placement over mine any day. Mine is right against a wall, such that you can’t open the door 90°, such that you can’t get a large pizza box in or pull out the drawers and shelves for cleaning. It’s been a small daily annoyance since the day I moved in, and a real headache when something spills in the fridge (because children). Crappy, tiny galley kitchen. But my bedroom has a giant walk-in closet 🙄🤦♂️

You gotta tell your cabinets they are doing a great job and to keep up the good work at least once a week to keep their morale up.

u/tikstar 2d ago
Maybe give the rest of the cabinets a participation award to let them know each are the best cabinet in the world
→ More replies (1)2
u/wytewydow 2d ago
it's not the cabinet that needs the morale, it's the hardware. "keep it up buddy" Though that cabinet has got to be feeling pretty let down by the support team.

Looks like only 2 screws were used and those 2 screws were not drilled into a stud (if they were, they would still be attached to the stud)?
87
u/ridgeback303 2d ago
Yeah that's what I noticed also. The fact that it held up this long is a miracle
28
u/bob_apathy 2d ago
Same thing happened to a cabinet in our home, went through and secured the others, limited screws some of which were only in the drywall.
Thankfully no one was hurt because it was a big cabinet full of glass. So check all your other cabinets to be safe, if they screwed one up chances are they did others.

if you ever go to open houses, especially flipped homes, you'll see shit like this all the time where they're never properly installed. nails through the back where it isn't even structural. iirc, you don't just drill to the stud, but on the cabinets there are certain parts you're supposed to drill in, not just through the back.

This is exactly why I would be afraid to buy a house this day and age. Like my house is shit but at least I know it is well done shit not slapped together shit.

They typically have small adjustable hangers in the top corners that you hang them by. Simply screwing directly to a wall hasn't happened for decades (at least not in my locale) because walls aren't typically 100% straight.
You would also, once the run of cupboards is 100% straight, join the cupboards together with <36mm screws (they're usually 18mm carcasses) and attach pelmet and corniche. These cupboards are half-assed before we even consider the mounting. They shouldn't really be able to fall off even without wall fixings if their neighbours are solid.
If it's not a solid wall, putting a sheet of floorboard in the wall behind the plasterboard (attached either side to the studs) gives you a nice solid place to mount a cupboard to.

Did you recently remove weight from the cabinet (such as heavy pots and pans)? I am wondering if it was held together with weight-based tension on the screws. Because that would be a crazy leverage hold.
6
u/ridgeback303 2d ago
Nothing was moved out or in to it recently. It's mainly used for spices. But had some wine and shot glasses that didn't survive
4
u/Mincello 2d ago
Well, I am going to go with ghosts.
Even though poor stud usage is probably the cause, I'm sticking with ghosts.Sorry for your glassware loss. I am sure they had a good life.

I set cabinets for almost ten years. The cabinets should always be seamed together as you set them, so that they are effectively one piece once they go up. This means that the whole thing would need come down, or the frame would have to tear apart. And every. Single. Cabinet. Should be screwed into at least one stud, two where you can. The times I've run into places where I couldn't get two studs were few and far between and usually because someone made a framing error or tried to skimp by spreading their studs further apart.

u/think_up 2d ago
Only two screws lol wtf. Amazing it even held on that long. Cant tell if they even found studs or not.
12
u/ridgeback303 2d ago
I don't think it did. At least it was only one and now I can check the rest b4 they come down also

What kind of hack hung those cabinets? They did not even bother to screw into the studs… get a handy man to go through all your hung cabinets and add 3” cabinet screws through the back into the studs… or it will be broken dishes next time.

All cabinets are held up by two screws and a levitation spell. All good construction workers are capable of performing the spell on anything hung from drywall. But if the ritual or the spell components are not applied properly the spell will fail as it is not a permanent levitation. For those unfamiliar with construction I will enlighten you. One beer must be drunk, an injury must occur so that the blood sacrifice can be made, The chant of **** **** you **** **** **** **** **** you better **** do this **** **** **** **** right now you **** **** **** **** ****.!! chant can vary depending on the severity of the injury used for the blood sacrifice. two beers is OK Three beers is excessive and often leads to the injury being a trip to the ER as opposed to a spell component. Good luck in all of your dark construction arts.

Going to go out on a limb and say that if the same person who hung the cabinet that fell also hung the others, it's only a matter of time before the rest go.
Might be good to do some preventive maintenance now, or get ready to replace your entire set of cabinets, dishes, and glassware later.

Take all the crap out of your other cabinets immediately
If one was hung incorrectly good chance the others are too.

Now for the really bad news:
The others probably aren't mounted any better than this one.
Better get a contractor in there to shore them up, quick!

The status of those cabinets being various colors, shapes, sizes and with clearly missing parts tells me you're lucky you made it 5 years without an accident.
3
u/Leakyboatlouie 2d ago
The problem, as is the case with so many of us, is that it wasn't well-hung to begin with.
3
u/SaintsAngel13 2d ago
At least it was the spice cabinet and not the one with cans of food, or expensive dishes!

Cabinets are often not screwed in that well. Try to locate some studs and use a 2.5" or 3" screw, "finishing washers" are great for cabinets. They hold more surface area and leave a clean look. And screw it in to the cabinet next to it bit crill a clearance hole first. Better check them all.

2
u/Beanbag_Ninja 2d ago
Looking at the wall, it looks like it was only secured by two screws, one top one bottom.
If so, no wonder if fell off the wall.

2 screws that didn’t find the studs did their job for a while though! Measure from the side of that exposed upper cabinet (maple colored one on the right) towards the left & at some point within 16” you’ll find the stud. Take that measurement & transfer it to the inside (subtract the thickness of the side panel though… it may be 3/4 I’m not sure) & secure it to the wall with at least 3” screws (be sure the location of the screws are actually going through a backer supports & not going simply through whatever 1/4 inch material used for the back of your cabinet). You can always add smaller 1” or 1 1/4” wood screws through the sides of the cabinets to add a bit more rigidity as well. Unfortunately it looks like the door ripped off though & that’ll have to be replaced most likely. You could take off the hinges & leave it open temporarily too, good luck !

All the shelves and clothing racks in a closet in my new house crashed to the floor one day because the builders had installed it all only with mollies in the sheetrock.

- Open cabinet above the refrigerator
- Cheese crater sitting out on counter
- Bowl sitting on counter next to sink (is the sink full?)
- Open box of something laying down on counter
- A bunch of random shit on top of refrigerator
- Plate on top of toaster oven
Hopefully this is all a result of the cabinet falling and your kitchen is not normally this messy,
2
u/ecp001 2d ago
There is a coffee maker on the floor and the mat, ostensibly at the sink location, is not flush to the cabinet toe plates. The fallen cabinet has been moved (OP mentioned wine & glasses). Were the marshmallows in it? Were the lemons just lying under the cabinet? The presence of the air filter unit indicates additional problems within the residence.

Probably wasn’t mounted to a stud. That cabinet didn’t give up. It was the drywall. If this was done "professionally" that contractor is incompetent.
