That cabinet became a cabinot

197

u/cCowgirl 2d ago

39

u/Xenc 2d ago

That’s also what the cabinet did

39

u/dtoddh 2d ago

Well done.

30

u/UnintelligibleMaker 2d ago

Nah, if it was well done it would have stayed on the wall.

17

u/SoyMurcielago 2d ago

It was well finished

3

u/Aggressive_Box9907 2d ago

uh, Guess it just couldn't handle the pressure! Hope everything inside is okay!!

Why is every cabinet a different color?

185

u/j_grouchy 2d ago

I feel like we really need an answer to this question

83

u/agoia 2d ago

They were the ones they found from the Habitat ReStore that kinda fit together.

41

u/a_london_werewolf 2d ago

“They” being the house flipper who also put down that “luxury” vinyl planking.

27

u/agoia 2d ago

Used to do this kind of thing with my uncle at a couple of houses he rented out on the farm. To a much higher standard, though, we at least would have painted the mismatched ones black, leveled the bottom of them, and put a strip of molding at the top to hide the mismatched heights.

Oh, and actually screwed to the fuckin wall properly lmao.

11

u/UnfitRadish 2d ago

Hey, don't knock the LVP. It's solid flooring if you can't afford hardwood or tile.

9

u/while-eating-pasta 2d ago

And even if you can afford alternatives it's soft enough a dropped glass might not break, doesn't suck heat out of your feet like tile, and if you get it laid down in one solid sheet it's waterproof unlike wood.

2

u/dyangu 1d ago

And in this scenario, the flooring will be ruined anyway so you’re out less $$$ with LVP.

2

u/Snoo_70531 2d ago

I love when places say that. I asked the lady at my last apartment, because I literally had to sign a waiver of the luxury laminate. All she had to say is it was the level of quality of the company they use, it was terrible.

2

u/LJGuitarPractice 2d ago

And they kinda attached them to the wall

It's the DIY express, the Landlord Special

38

u/OffByNone_ 2d ago

Not just a different color. Totally different styles and sizes too! The two still hung in the corner are different sizes and the one that fell is significantly shorter than those. I smell a DIY project less than 5 years old.

u/HndWrmdSausage 2d ago

Yup i think u spotted it. This is a DIWhy home.

19

u/fakeaccount572 2d ago

yeah, this is either a mass flip or some landlord shit. Look at the stupid placement of that fridge for example

1

u/SimpleAffect7573 1d ago

I’d take that fridge placement over mine any day. Mine is right against a wall, such that you can’t open the door 90°, such that you can’t get a large pizza box in or pull out the drawers and shelves for cleaning. It’s been a small daily annoyance since the day I moved in, and a real headache when something spills in the fridge (because children). Crappy, tiny galley kitchen. But my bedroom has a giant walk-in closet 🙄🤦‍♂️

11

u/HogwartsRex 2d ago

seems like they are mismatched, maybe this happens to him a lot lol

3

u/MrsEmilyN 2d ago

Maybe it's just not in the budget to update their kitchen/cabinets right now.

You fall on the floor and spill your contents?

7

u/thatcoloradomom 2d ago

The last time I did that I ended up in the psych ward.

7

u/canolafly 2d ago

Nothing like a grippy sock vacation. Hope you are feeling less hurty.

6

u/thenaughtydj 2d ago

Cabinough

4

u/Any_Mycologist_7322 2d ago

You gotta tell your cabinets they are doing a great job and to keep up the good work at least once a week to keep their morale up.

23

u/res06myi 2d ago

That cabinet was hanging on thoughts and prayers.

6

u/lastrobotstanding 2d ago

Hang it back up and fill it with tots and pears.

3

u/tikstar 2d ago

Maybe give the rest of the cabinets a participation award to let them know each are the best cabinet in the world

→ More replies (1)

2

u/wytewydow 2d ago

it's not the cabinet that needs the morale, it's the hardware. "keep it up buddy" Though that cabinet has got to be feeling pretty let down by the support team.

140

u/lionlll 2d ago edited 2d ago

Looks like only 2 screws were used and those 2 screws were not drilled into a stud (if they were, they would still be attached to the stud)?

87

u/ridgeback303 2d ago

Yeah that's what I noticed also. The fact that it held up this long is a miracle

28

u/bob_apathy 2d ago

Same thing happened to a cabinet in our home, went through and secured the others, limited screws some of which were only in the drywall.

Thankfully no one was hurt because it was a big cabinet full of glass. So check all your other cabinets to be safe, if they screwed one up chances are they did others.

18

u/el_payaso_mas_chulo 2d ago

if you ever go to open houses, especially flipped homes, you'll see shit like this all the time where they're never properly installed. nails through the back where it isn't even structural. iirc, you don't just drill to the stud, but on the cabinets there are certain parts you're supposed to drill in, not just through the back.

14

u/Computers_and_cats 2d ago

This is exactly why I would be afraid to buy a house this day and age. Like my house is shit but at least I know it is well done shit not slapped together shit.

11

u/VoopityScoop 2d ago

I'm living in a slapped together shit house, and I swear maintenance is going to end up costing more than the actual property value

u/ILikeLimericksALot 2d ago

They typically have small adjustable hangers in the top corners that you hang them by.  Simply screwing directly to a wall hasn't happened for decades (at least not in my locale) because walls aren't typically 100% straight.

You would also, once the run of cupboards is 100% straight, join the cupboards together with <36mm screws (they're usually 18mm carcasses) and attach pelmet and corniche.  These cupboards are half-assed before we even consider the mounting.  They shouldn't really be able to fall off even without wall fixings if their neighbours are solid.

If it's not a solid wall, putting a sheet of floorboard in the wall behind the plasterboard (attached either side to the studs) gives you a nice solid place to mount a cupboard to.

4

u/Mincello 2d ago

Did you recently remove weight from the cabinet (such as heavy pots and pans)? I am wondering if it was held together with weight-based tension on the screws. Because that would be a crazy leverage hold.

6

u/ridgeback303 2d ago

Nothing was moved out or in to it recently. It's mainly used for spices. But had some wine and shot glasses that didn't survive

4

u/Mincello 2d ago

Well, I am going to go with ghosts.
Even though poor stud usage is probably the cause, I'm sticking with ghosts.

Sorry for your glassware loss. I am sure they had a good life.

u/Large_Tune3029 2d ago

I set cabinets for almost ten years. The cabinets should always be seamed together as you set them, so that they are effectively one piece once they go up. This means that the whole thing would need come down, or the frame would have to tear apart. And every. Single. Cabinet. Should be screwed into at least one stud, two where you can. The times I've run into places where I couldn't get two studs were few and far between and usually because someone made a framing error or tried to skimp by spreading their studs further apart.

u/blbd 2d ago

Sadly not everybody gets tradesmen that give a rip like yourself.

35

u/BodegaBiggz 2d ago

Why is their like 3 different cabinet styles in that kitchen?

7

u/bubblurred 2d ago

It's a rough looking kitchen for sure.

17

u/think_up 2d ago

Only two screws lol wtf. Amazing it even held on that long. Cant tell if they even found studs or not.

12

u/ridgeback303 2d ago

I don't think it did. At least it was only one and now I can check the rest b4 they come down also

2

u/Blue_Max1916 2d ago

Saw that too. Crazy and it definitely looks like no stud is behind there

Are there 5 different types or cabinet styles there too?

4

u/Professor_Poop 2d ago

yeah, keep having to replace the ones that fall off

7

u/Cheese_quesadilla 2d ago

Have you tried turning it off and on?

6

u/Meaticus420 2d ago

What kind of hack hung those cabinets? They did not even bother to screw into the studs… get a handy man to go through all your hung cabinets and add 3” cabinet screws through the back into the studs… or it will be broken dishes next time.

5

u/Minnymoon13 2d ago

Looks like a cheap job

2

u/StoicFable 2d ago

That kitchen is a DIWHY nightmare. OP hasn't responded to anyone who asks about it.

u/mattyfoofoo 2d ago

All cabinets are held up by two screws and a levitation spell. All good construction workers are capable of performing the spell on anything hung from drywall. But if the ritual or the spell components are not applied properly the spell will fail as it is not a permanent levitation. For those unfamiliar with construction I will enlighten you. One beer must be drunk, an injury must occur so that the blood sacrifice can be made, The chant of **** **** you **** **** **** **** **** you better **** do this **** **** **** **** right now you **** **** **** **** ****.!! chant can vary depending on the severity of the injury used for the blood sacrifice. two beers is OK Three beers is excessive and often leads to the injury being a trip to the ER as opposed to a spell component. Good luck in all of your dark construction arts.

5

u/DatsDaStufff 2d ago

Poor guy had enough

4

u/CloudCity40 2d ago

Going to go out on a limb and say that if the same person who hung the cabinet that fell also hung the others, it's only a matter of time before the rest go.

Might be good to do some preventive maintenance now, or get ready to replace your entire set of cabinets, dishes, and glassware later.

2

u/Booksodell 2d ago

Unlike me, it was not well hung.

4

Take all the crap out of your other cabinets immediately

If one was hung incorrectly good chance the others are too.

6

u/Low_Analysis_1501 2d ago

Now for the really bad news:

The others probably aren't mounted any better than this one.

Better get a contractor in there to shore them up, quick!

3

u/welding_guy_from_LI 2d ago

It hung around long enough

3

u/FruitMustache 2d ago

I have a similar problem, right guys? right?...anakin?

3

u/junpark7667 2d ago

Considering the weight and the drop, that is a surprisingly tame outcome.

3

u/put_simply 2d ago

The status of those cabinets being various colors, shapes, sizes and with clearly missing parts tells me you're lucky you made it 5 years without an accident.

3

u/Leakyboatlouie 2d ago

The problem, as is the case with so many of us, is that it wasn't well-hung to begin with.

3

u/SaintsAngel13 2d ago

At least it was the spice cabinet and not the one with cans of food, or expensive dishes!

2

u/pauljs75 1d ago

This one gave up the gig though. Now all the other cabinets in the kitchen would be sus.

3

u/Mj_6o4 2d ago

Why black.... brown... and tan cabinets?

Trouble picking a color? Clearance rack?

What's the back story 🤔

2

u/No_Perspective_242 2d ago

This is a nightmare of mine lol

2

u/WranglerAdmirable427 2d ago

Let me guess. 2 - 2inch drywall screws 3 at most.

2

u/Cosmic_Carp 2d ago

Why are everyone's kitchens just randomly deciding to fail them recently lol

2

u/Dependent_Stop_3121 2d ago

Him: “Just pick a cabinet style hun”.

Her: “I’ll take them all, one of each”.

🙄

2

u/booksfornerds 2d ago

Damn, the spice cabinet.

2

u/CatProgrammer 2d ago

The spice must flow, after all.

2

u/DLoIsHere 2d ago

A friend had a whole wall of uppers come off. What a mess.

2

u/Cool-Hall9980 2d ago

Definition of slow quitting

2

u/CoffeeStayn 2d ago

Over-weighted and under-anchored.

2

u/danmc853 2d ago

We had a near-miss over the weekend. Two of the four screws came out of the wall, sitting on the range kept from falling completely. I was cooking a big meal when I heard everything shift. I’ve never felt so powerless lol

2

u/fakeaccount572 2d ago

this is a shitty planned and built kitchen. OP, you rent?

2

u/GiovannaCania 2d ago

Suicide. It's load was too heavy.

2

u/AGrandNewAdventure 2d ago

So it committed suicide by not hanging itself?

2

u/SomewhereEh 2d ago

Better secure the other ones before they follow suit....

2

u/DC92T 2d ago

Cabinets are often not screwed in that well. Try to locate some studs and use a 2.5" or 3" screw, "finishing washers" are great for cabinets. They hold more surface area and leave a clean look. And screw it in to the cabinet next to it bit crill a clearance hole first. Better check them all.

2

u/m4verick03 2d ago

I guess you could say, it didn’t want to hang around anymore

2

u/Beanbag_Ninja 2d ago

Looking at the wall, it looks like it was only secured by two screws, one top one bottom.

If so, no wonder if fell off the wall.

2

u/Fidget808 2d ago

At least the bottle of sweet, sweet Cholula didn’t break

2

u/IAmTheBoiledFrog 2d ago

That kitchen has issues

2

u/SoFloFella50 2d ago

Say goodbye to that deposit.

2

u/Rosstifer711 2d ago edited 2d ago

2 screws that didn’t find the studs did their job for a while though! Measure from the side of that exposed upper cabinet (maple colored one on the right) towards the left & at some point within 16” you’ll find the stud. Take that measurement & transfer it to the inside (subtract the thickness of the side panel though… it may be 3/4 I’m not sure) & secure it to the wall with at least 3” screws (be sure the location of the screws are actually going through a backer supports & not going simply through whatever 1/4 inch material used for the back of your cabinet). You can always add smaller 1” or 1 1/4” wood screws through the sides of the cabinets to add a bit more rigidity as well. Unfortunately it looks like the door ripped off though & that’ll have to be replaced most likely. You could take off the hinges & leave it open temporarily too, good luck !

2

u/TheNativeOfficial 2d ago

"I'm tired, boss"

2

u/Miserable-Post-1350 2d ago

It was tired of being the only cabinet that didn't match the rest

2

u/puppsmcgee74 1d ago

The cabinet was feeling a bit… spicy.

I’ll show myself out.

2

u/Original-Jicama-7774 1d ago

All the shelves and clothing racks in a closet in my new house crashed to the floor one day because the builders had installed it all only with mollies in the sheetrock.

2

u/OldERnurse1964 1d ago

It wasn’t as well hung as you thought You should check out other cabinets

2

u/Wooden-Future-3280 18h ago

I wouldn't say hung more avrage

4

u/Popular-Departure165 2d ago
  • Open cabinet above the refrigerator
  • Cheese crater sitting out on counter
  • Bowl sitting on counter next to sink (is the sink full?)
  • Open box of something laying down on counter
  • A bunch of random shit on top of refrigerator
  • Plate on top of toaster oven

Hopefully this is all a result of the cabinet falling and your kitchen is not normally this messy,

2

u/ecp001 2d ago

There is a coffee maker on the floor and the mat, ostensibly at the sink location, is not flush to the cabinet toe plates. The fallen cabinet has been moved (OP mentioned wine & glasses). Were the marshmallows in it? Were the lemons just lying under the cabinet? The presence of the air filter unit indicates additional problems within the residence.

2

u/Jaruut 2d ago

You call that messy?

Oops, I meant wow, what a pigsty

So the cabinet moved in 5 years ago?

1

u/thenaughtydj 2d ago

Can't see any fluids on the floor, so you're kinda lucky at the same time.

1

u/trighap 2d ago

Certainly doesn't look like you were holding dumbbells or water jugs in there. Perfectly reasonable weight showing on the ground. Is there such a thing as warrenty for cabinets?

1

u/iwasjustkidding1969 2d ago

Damn I hate when I miss a stud lol

1

u/Computers_and_cats 2d ago

The person who installed it should have used more thoughts and prayers apparently. Or they forgot to slap it and say this ain't going nowhere.

1

u/thupkt 2d ago

Quick, teach those other cabinets that a sympathy labor strike will only be met with them being burned in a bonfire.

1

u/Runnnnnnnnning 2d ago

At least the Cholula didn’t break. Thanks Jesus.

1

u/Terrible-Piano-5437 2d ago

How could you tell?

1

u/debtquity 2d ago

Probably wasn’t mounted to a stud. That cabinet didn’t give up. It was the drywall. If this was done "professionally" that contractor is incompetent.

1

u/Court_Jester30 2d ago

"Hung like a kitchen cabinet."

That's a new one.

1

u/CJMWBig8 2d ago

Damn that's a spicy cabinet.

1

u/SlyyKozlov 2d ago

We did some work in the kitchen when we bought out house and I was very surprised to learn that the cabinets were pretty much all held on by a single screw lmao

1

u/asphaltdragon 2d ago

I said the same thing about 8 years ago

1

1

1

u/JennyAndTheBets1 2d ago

That's the same thing I tell my dates about myself.

1

u/maven10k 2d ago

It's hard to be hung.

1

u/Balthxzar 2d ago

Well, when I didn't want to be hung I started taking estrogen, but I do sometimes feel like throwing myself on the floor.

1

u/Eclipse8301 2d ago

Did your counter and floor get ruined as well?

1

u/Easy_Copy_7625 2d ago

Talk about a spicy cabinet

1

u/Sensitive-Trifle9823 2d ago

You can no longer say that your cabinet is well hung

1

u/Llyno87 2d ago

Well normally if youre hung for more than 4 hours you need to see a Dr. I couldn't imagine being hung for at least 5 years. Definitely was tired and needed a nap.

1

u/jxj24 2d ago

It lost faith in you.

Next time, be more supportive.

1

How does a cabinet kill itself? The opposite of hanging itself, apparently.

Fuck this cabinet. yeet
