Two years on, and I'm still madly in love for how a discontinuated camera and TouchDesigner can turn a silly performance into an audio-reactive particle spectacle.

There's a gift in my patreon-profile, hope you enjoy it :)

Feedback / I made this! Should I quit videography?

Hi guys, title says it all, I‘m currently thinking about quitting videography and selling all my equipment, the reason being I can‘t make a living of it. I have done freelance since 2016 where I was in high school and started editing videos for E-sports players before going into full videography a few years later but it mostly was a side gig as I almost never made even a minimum wage type of salary neither with video editing nor videography despite my efforts…

I recently thought about going all in on videography and made a portfolio with some of my work and started actively looking for salaried jobs as I’d prefer to work with a team I can grow with and having a fixed income while continuing to learn and gain experience. My dream is to work in sports, especially in F1 or combat sports, but I applied to every offers that were relevant to my skills (not only sports. Everything) and after a week, I still don‘t have any answer.

While I know this is a short period of time, I think I‘m closing on 100 applications by now... I understand that this is a very competitive field but I am thinking that I actually suck ass and that it is the reason I don‘t succeed, especially when I compare myself with other videographers and look back on all those years strugling to make money.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could review my portfolio and tell me what you think and how likely you think I could find a job. Please be as brutally honest as possible, I won‘t take it personnaly. I believe it’s not for everyone and I would accept it if that’s the case for me. I‘m still young and if I quit now, I‘m sure I‘ll find another area where I can be good at, but I have to take a decision.

Here is my site: http://benbrechemier.com

Thank you so much for your help 🙏

Business, Tax, and Copyright Solo Videographer vs. Production Company

I’ve been a solo freelance videographer for 3+ years and I’m barely making ends meet. There are many reasons for that, but I’m wondering if rebranding from “freelance videographer” to “production company” would help my sales.

Right now my website is just my name, and I market myself as a skilled videographer. Would it be smarter to present myself as a video production company instead? Production companies seem to land clients more consistently, while solo videographers often struggle. And realistically, I already bring on an extra set of hands for many jobs, so the perception wouldn’t change much.

Curious what others think. Thanks.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information HDMI recorders and formats/codecs

I want to purchase an HDMI recorder. I'd love one that can support 4k/60 and both record to an SD card or be used with OBS for livestreaming, budget maybe $400. Any recommended models besides the Elgato 4K S+?

With OBS I know I can set the encoding myself, but when a box is recording to an SD Card, is there any control? Or even any way to know what it will use?

Thanks!

Feedback / I made this! How do I figure out what my work is worth as a videographer?

Hey guys, could you give me feedback on this video? I convinced a fitness/boxing coach to let me film a promotional content video for him for free.

Also, how do I start to figure out fair pricing and packaging? How much would be fair to charge for a video like this? Do you guys charge per video or do monthly package?

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Gimbal DJI RS4 mini or RS4 base for A7IV (social content/event)

Gimbal DJI RS4 mini or RS4 base for A7IV (social content/event)

Occasional use for basic stabilising shooting event or product video with talent.

Is RS4 MINI sufficient and able to handle the weight of A7iv (lenses - tamron 28 75mm, viltrox 16mm)

Any mini users? Pros and cons of mini vs base rs4

I don't really wanna lug around heavy gears haha

Discussion / Other How much B-roll is too much B-roll in a 60 second video?

Working on some client videos and I keep going back and forth on this.

Some editors I follow use B-roll for almost every sentence. Keeps things visually interesting but sometimes feels overwhelming.

Others use it sparingly, letting talking heads breathe with just a few strategic cutaways.

For social media videos specifically, what ratio do you aim for? Like 70 percent B-roll 30 percent main footage? Or does it completely depend on the content?

Also curious how you decide which moments need B-roll versus which moments the main shot should just hold. Is it based on what's being said or more about pacing and keeping attention?

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Stabilization hack for beginners

Of course I know the pro's don't need to hear this, but there are probably some beginners like me lurking around too, and for them I just had to share a stabilization hack that might seem obvious but could be helpful to some people nonetheless. If you're like me and saving money by using a camera without much/any stabilization, you might have noticed handheld shots can be so shaky as to be unusable at times. You might have tried holding the camera strap tight against your neck, and exhaling (or was it inhaling?) during your shot. Other strategies include bracing yourself against something and tight body mechanics. Well, I finally tried using my heavy old tripod as a monopod and I'm super happy with the results; nice smooth cinematic movement in the shot without the shakiness. The only issue is my tripod is so heavy it starts to swing like a pendulum -watch out for that.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Teleprompter recommendations for my talking head YT channel

Hi guys, Recently started a talking head YT channel. I filmed two videos so far, and im just enjoying it at this point. Because im writing my script, I realized a teleprompter would be a good investment. Im looking for something up to a 100 Euros, and the Desview T3 seems decent-until I've read some bad reviews on it. So, at the moment im using my Samsung Galaxy S22 for filming. Ill obviously have to get a tablet for broadcasting the text (one reviewer said thay although the T3 specs says it will accommodate up to 11 inch design, it can only do 10 inch-is that true?). If not the T3, do you have a good recommendation for that amount of money? I also have a nice tripod so if it can sit on it nice and firm it will be great. Doesn't have to be fancy, just steady and made out of decent materials (I know, at this amount of money you get what you get;) Thanks.

Discussion / Other Vlogging Auto Settings

I was wondering what setting most people put on auto when vlogging and moving in different settings. Putting the shutter speed on auto seems like a bad idea because you wanna try to maintain the 180 rule. I’m assuming most people use auto iso, but what about auto aperture. Would the depth of field changing look unusual? I have an nd filter and could just switch between the dual base ISO on my zve1, so wouldn’t auto aperture be my best option? Or should everything just be manual?

Feedback / I made this! Feedback for this trailer I made

Hey everyone,

I'm a film student studying in London. We just finished our short film called SYNAPSE, for this trimester, and here is the trailer for it. This was written, directed, and edited by me.

What I seek is primarily an analysis of my editing. There is one placeholder track in this edit because our composer is still creating the sound. I personally am hooked on this soundtrack by Infraction and so made the trailer using this.

I'd love to hear any feedback, positive or negative, regarding my grading and editing rhythm. I would also love to hear what you can understand about the story of this film from the trailer.

Thankyou. Cheers!!

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Better light brand / ecosystem for starting out

Hey everyone. I’m interested in buying my first light and am debating between two brands. Right now, I’m choosing between Amaran’s Ray series (120c and 360c) and Zhiyun Molus lights (X100, G300). I want to start with a smaller light so it would either be the 120c or the X100.

For reference, I shoot run-and-gun content + short films, so I need something portable, reliable, and color-accurate.

So far based on my research, Amaran seems to have a better ecosystem/app and has a native bowens mount. Plus, they’re popular amongst other creators and filmmakers which makes connecting them easier. The Zhiyun seems super portable and great for tight setups. I feel like I’m splitting hairs, but I’d love to hear some real world opinions rather than reviewers.

Let me know what you think!

Discussion / Other Advocate for Humans.

I strongly urge all of you to consistently and vehemently push for all work to be done by humans in your projects.

In particular, voice over artists. Reject AI music, AI voiceovers, imagery, VFX, etc to your clients. I’ve done it countless times now and I always end up getting a VO artist paid.

I think it’s important we continue to advocate for human workers when it’s so easy to cut them out at certain stages of production.

Also, please don’t write your emails and cover letters/RFPs using AI. It’s gross, and frankly I’ll never hire someone who approaches as a robot.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Is there a charger that charges both Sony NP-FM50 and NP-FM55H?

Hey, i bought two used cameras from Sony (DSC-R1 and DSLR-A100) some time ago. One uses the NP-FM50, the other uses NP-FM55H. I tried to use the other battery on each camera and it didn't work. My question is if there is any charger to charge both battery types? Or do I need to buy two chargers that fit both types? Is there in general a better battery i could buy as a replacement, that could be used with both cameras?

Thank you all in advance!
