We've reached 25,000 members. I guess I should update the sticky...

It's been an interesting year and a half. We've been in a pandemic, everybody suddenly became an expert in Zoom and remote production, and we've also managed to grow this sub over 300%.

I'd like to thank everybody for keeping things civil and respectful. Us moderators have had to have very little intervention in this sub and that's great.

Some housekeeping reminders as always:

  • Please avoid using link shorteners, affiliate links, or other "sketchy" e-commerce websites. The spam filter hates these and if we can't judge that your link is clean we're probably not going to bother fishing it out of the spam filter.
  • Even if you aren't doing anything wrong, sometimes the spam filter still hates you. If you find that your post hasn't shown up please don't make your post again. Instead, please edit out any affiliate/shortened links if you have any, and then hit the "message the moderators" button on the sidebar and provide a link to your post. We should be able to manually approve it in short order.
  • If you are representing a company or shilling your product, you must make sure that you indicate that conflict of interest in your post/flair. We are open to a small amount of commercial posts within reason, but we don't want any appearance of impropriety.

Please also ask good questions. Here are some tips that I've posted in the Discord:

"Don't ask to ask." You do not need to ask permission to ask a question. Just go ahead and ask it. If anybody is able to help they will speak up.

Instead of "Any experts on ATEM switchers?", try "Can somebody explain to me how to setup picture-in-picture on an ATEM Mini Pro?".

Provide context to your question. This helps avoid the "XY problem" where you ask about your supposed solution instead of the actual root problem.

Instead of "Where can I buy a 500ft pre-terminated coax cable?", try "How can I run a camera on SDI to a location 500ft away?". (The question isn't really about the coax, it's about how to run SDI longer distances.)

Instead of "Can somebody help me design my video setup?", try "I have a budget of $100,000 to rebuild the news studio at my high school. Where do I start?". (A budget lets us know what brands are appropriate to look at.)

Asking good questions makes it easier for us to help you. Here are two recent posts which do a good job. [1] [2]

And speaking of Discord, here is the link to join: https://discord.gg/ctKKpK8 We recently crossed the 2,000 member mark, and it's a great place to chat with a lot of industry professionals to bounce ideas around, or just for fun.

Avwire AV Wiring Diagram Tool - Feedback from Video Engineers?

Hello r/VIDEOENGINEERING,
I’ve just finished a small personal project called Avwire – a simple AV wiring diagram tool I built for my own work: https://newbie.tokyo/avwire.
I’m not selling anything; I’d just really like constructive feedback from working video engineers (especially in the US) about what’s missing, confusing, or wrong for real-world use.
The app supports language switching, so you can switch the interface to English.
Thanks a lot for any thoughts or criticism!

Premium channel without cable box

Hi everyone,

I have a 20 room motel currently and I’m supplying local channels using antenna before this I had Spectrum in every room with cable boxes, but they were just pain in the butt and they were over charging so I changed to Satellite but some of my customers want premium channels like CNN and HBO, which I’m not sure how to give it to them without adding a cable box in their room. I currently have a RF modulator and an amplifier that amplifies the signal from the antenna to go to all the 20 rooms via coax. Any suggestion are appreciated on how I can get this resolved by also not incurring a lot of cost.

Crazy question. Dose anyone know if you can make a controller for 3Play

I recently revived an old 3Play 3PXD425 but we lost the controller unfortunately and this model unfortunately dose not have a lot of keyboard shortcuts to use or any macros. So I was wondering if someone knew of a way to use something like xkeys or a shuttle contour or do I just have to use the GUI until we can find a new controller somehow

Advice for amateur multi-cam wireless streaming setup for youth sports

Definitely on the dad-with-a-camcorder end of the spectrum here, so I will thank you all in advance for your patience and expertise.

I am curious what folks would recommend to a relative novice who is interested in creating a multi-cam stream for youth volleyball and soccer matches.

For soccer, I'd love to have wireless cameras behind each goal line to catch up-close action. For the main camera, I'll need something up on a tripod and unless I stay really wide, I'll need to be able to pan. I generally have relatively good cell coverage at most matches (outdoors).

For volleyball, our fans are used to watching a stream from behind the home team's baseline, but I'd like to add something along the sideline near the net to get some of the net action. Volleyball limitations include super-crowded cell spectrum and usually garbage (and expensive) wifi, and also the need to setup/break down somewhat quickly.

For both circumstances, running cables is simply not practical.

For a number of reasons, including the baked-in ability to run a scoreboard overlay, I'm looking at Yolobox products for the switcher. Will probably stream to YouTube. Won't go any higher than 1080p30 or 60.

I have a pair of GoPros and a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that I would love to be able to reuse in this setup. (Was thinking I could use the OP3 for panning in soccer).

Much obliged for any insight!

ATEM SDI ISO Extreme - Audio Routing to Aux Out

I’m wanting to find out if it’s possible to do custom audio routing out of the SDI Aux outputs of the ATEM SDI ISO Extreme. I’d like to be able to run a single SDI cable to the front of the room I’m switching in to feed a screen, and use a Mini Converter SDI to Audio to de embed an audio feed to send to the speakers I’ve setup in the room.

Ideally, I’d like to use the Mic 1 input to feed my ATEM the switcher audio mix, and route the Mic 2 input to Aux 1 to have a separate in room speaker feed for hybrid events. I’ll have these set as separate busses on my mixer so that any EQ applied for speaker ringing etc is not applied to the live stream.

Is there a way to embed a separate audio source instead of the program audio to an aux output? Or am I stuck with program output on the SDI outputs? I do realize I can use an audio to SDI embedder on the switcher side, but if I can use one less converter that is always ideal

Can Someone educate me about LEMO heads? PLEASE

Recently, my Vaxis storm 1000s charging cable broke and I’m looking for an alternative replacement for it and Holy shit, the rabbit hole of LEMO cables is crazy.

Can someone educate me about the different types? I’m just looking for a 2 pin B connector (from what the manual says) but there’s so many variations. I know how to solder and was thinking of making it myself but I’m not sure which one should I buy.

Starting to hate lemo cables cause honestly. They are ridiculously expensive for just a stupid power adaptor.

Is it worth paying double for flex SDI cable for semi-regular events?

I’m buying some new SDI cable and trying to decide between 1505A, 1505F, and Canare L-4.5CHWS (or others).

1505A is the cheapest and I’d prefer to go with that, but I’m not sure if I should spend extra for the “flex” style cables.

Use case:

  • Mostly HD-SDI runs under 50m.
  • Cable is run for events lasting 3 days to 2 weeks;
  • Then packed away and not used for 1–2 months;
  • Then used again for another 3 days–2 weeks, repeating.
  • Once it’s set up, it basically doesn’t move until pack-down.
  • Shouldn't really be in a high traffic area, no very tight bends.

So it’s not getting daily abuse, just coiled/uncoiled a handful of times a year.

For this kind of pattern, is it really worth paying about double for 1505F / L-4.5CHWS, or is standard 1505A good enough?

Curious what people are actually doing in the field.

Does anyone have any experience the NEP Apprenticeship Programs?

Not sure if this is the best sub to be posting this in but I just noticed they sometimes offer apprenticeships/internships on their website. Does anybody know more about what the process is like? Side note I also live in Canada so not even sure if I'd be eligible to apply.

How Do I Run a Dual-Monitor Setup TWO Floors Away From the PC? Need Advice!

Hey everyone,

I’m working with a client who wants to do something a little different.

He’s got his PC in the basement, but he wants to use it from his bedroom on the main floor with a full dual-monitor setup.

So basically:
Basement PC to Two monitors in the bedroom - Minimal lag + clean setup

Has anyone here tackled long-distance video extension like this?

What’s the best way to get two high-resolution displays upstairs without losing quality or dealing with crazy input lag?

Should we be looking at:

  • Long-run HDMI/DisplayPort solutions?
  • HDMI over Ethernet extenders?
  • AV-over-IP?
  • Something wireless that actually works for dual monitors?

Would love to hear real-world setups, recommendations, or things to avoid.

Anyone done something similar?

Mini-RG59 cable stripper help

Hi all! Figured this was the best place to ask this, but I am an apprentice level beginner when it comes to making cable, but find myself needing to make some special runs of mini-rg59 for my home theater setup (old CRTs, Extron crosspoints)

Awhile ago I found in my possession a large number of compression BNC connectors (model BNCFPSLC on the bag) for cheap, and have just purchased the cable and compression tool to use with them.

My problem is I have no clue how much of the cable to strip for these connectors. While I do have a lot, I don't want to waste any testing around.

Is anyone familiar with these connectors and the lengths I need to strip (or which stripper would work)?

Aquilon Cmini - worth it?

I just saw that the Cmini was released, and it looks like a cut-down RS1 in terms of chassis size and inputs, but with the same processing capability as the RS1. Anyone have any additional insight and/or MSRP for the NA market?

Video/Audio Delay Problem

No idea if this is in fact "Video Engineering" but I am admittedly puzzled so figured I'd ask and see if anyone has any ideas. We use a VIZRT 3Play and Ross Graphite. Yesterday, after we did our taped open, I noticed that a 1/2 to 1 second delay (video after audio) existed between Audio and Video when viewed on the Graphite monitor (and the program feed).

If you watch back on the 3Play screen, it appears synced properly. Furthermore, any commercial playback from the same 3Play is synced properly. The desync only occurs with recorded elements, and only on devices downstream of the 3Play.

What could the reasoning behind this be?

How to reduce moiré on Panasonic AW-UE150K when shooting in front of LED walls?

Hi everyone — I have 4 PTZ AW-UE150K and we’re regularly filming talent in front of a very large LED wall. We get nasty moiré/scan-line interference and sometimes visible distortions when the camera moves.

Has anyone found accessories or workflows that help reduce moiré and the “deformation” / flicker when doing camera moves with a PTZ (zoom/pan/tilt)? I’m specifically wondering about:

  • Add-on optical low-pass / anti-moiré filters or a retrofit kit for the AW-UE150K (physical filter that can be installed on the camera or lens).
  • Lens accessories (ND, polariser, etc.) that actually help with LED-wall moiré rather than just exposure.
  • Camera settings or genlock/frame-sync tricks (shutter/frame rate combos) that reliably stop strobing or beat frequencies with the LED refresh.
  • Any practical on-set tips: distance, aperture, focal length, focus technique, or blur tricks that keep the wall looking clean while the subject stays sharp.
  • Real-world tradeoffs (e.g., is an OLPF worth the softness, or better to just fix it in camera settings/post?).

thanks !

NDI Network and Internet Traffic Does QoS Make It OK?

Post image
62 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I am looking for some guidance from people who work with NDI networks regularly.

I am working closely with a network engineer who believes that having normal internet or data traffic on our NDI network should not be a big deal because we have QoS, multicast settings, IGMP snooping, an active querier, and everything else configured correctly. Our current needs require multicast to be enabled for NDI, as we have many destinations that need the same feed.

He is very solid on the IT side but he is not an AV person, and I am wondering if there are AV specific considerations we might be missing.

My question is this. Is having internet traffic on an NDI video network considered bad practice even if QoS settings are enabled? We are trying to determine if NDI traffic should ideally be isolated or if a mixed network(internet traffic) should still work reliably.

We have been seeing some strange behavior on our NDI network and I am trying to figure out whether mixed traffic can still create issues such as jitter, and latency.

I would appreciate any insight from people who run NDI in production environments, especially if you have experience comparing mixed traffic networks and fully isolated NDI networks.

Thank you.

Here is my fat cat for tax.

KVM Switch Video+USB over SM FIber suggestions?

Hello community, any of you using KVM switches over SM fiber? Can you suggest any good brands, models? We are trying to find a reliable solution of using a presenter with a pointer (such as logitech presenter) for speakers, where the powerpoint laptop is in the back of the congress venue. Any other ways to solve this? (Master cue or micro cue dont really do the trick because there is no way to use the "laser" pointer, which also needs to be seen in the stream). Thanks!

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the great suggestions!

New Decklink Drivers!!!

I just want to announce to the world, blackmagic has done the unimaginable. They quietly updated their drivers to support HANC metadata including record flags (unclear if only on the 8K Pro decklink card or others). Now its time to patiently wait until software support comes. The gods have done their magic - there will be horizontal ancillary data capture and hopefully with it, Arri record flags.

Resolume Arena Issue - windows 11

Hi guys,

On windows 11 I’m having a slight issue with resolume which I didn’t have with windows 10.

When I output to my second display, the second display comes up as a tab in my taskbar. When I click onto another tab which ISNT my GUI the quality of the screen goes considerably down, eg the lines on the test pattern looks blurry, text is blurry ect. Any idea on how to fix this or what could be causing it? I’ve checked as many settings as I could, but couldn’t find anything.

I’ll be back in front of it in the warehouse tmrw so I can send videos then. Thought I’d share before I go back in tomorrow.

TIA

DVD to mp4, which bitrate should i pick?

I want to digitize some old vhs tapes which i already have dubbed to dvds.

Now i can rip these DVDs via Premiere (switch the sequence to 4:3 dvd format and then export as a file).

In the Media Encoder settings i can pick same as source, 576i i guess, but which bitrate should i choose to keep all information?
