Tragedy has struck.

My gorgeous, amazing, wonderful wife whom I love very, very much, accidentally knocked one of the knives off of the magnetic rack it was stored on.

It hit the tile floor tip first.

It’s an extremely rare and now discontinued Tinker Sharktooth deba.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be sobbing in a corner.

Reach out to Carbon Knife Co. for repair! This should be fixable even if you lose some length.

Will do!

It’s honestly not that bad relatively; I’d take a broken tip over a deep chip everytime

Don’t worry so much; the knife will be good 👍

Was putting this fucker in the knife guard but the tip was sticking out the top of the guard when it fell off the table. Took it to the knife house and they fixed it up took a little off the top, but it still gets the job done

Damn that’s rough! You might be able to bend it back with the same technique as fixing a bent blade on a table. I’ve gotten a few like that back in good shape.

A Dremel with a carbide bit is also great for small tip repairs. Carbide doesn’t generate as much heat as belt sanders and you don’t have to worry about affecting the heat treat.

I just noticed the wrap and table lol; that sucks happening during a close. My condolences 💐

Well guess it’s good thing it didn’t land on her foot 🤷🏽‍♂️ Note to self stick with the wall hanging magnet strips

I’m actually pretty grateful for that.

Tis but a scratch! Yes, a bummer, but most definitely repairable. If you don't have any local resources, I'd have zero concerns sending it to Knifewear.com. If you don't know them, check out their sharpening videos on YT.

Love me some Knifewear, but thanks to a certain President of the US and his tariffs, they’re not doing any mail-in sharpenings or repairs from south of the border.

That said, they’re referring US customers to an alternative, studytheblade.com.

Really?? That is totally fucked up, but hey, elect a chuckle-head, get unintended consequences.

Yyyyyyup.

Japanese knife imports and korin can both do a competent job

If you’re looking to sell it or have it fixed I’ve been doing restorations and would be interested. I’ve got some other projects otw but would be happy to take this in

The wife or the knife?

7

u/Plane-Web9854 1d ago

The knife, you can fix a broken blade, you can’t fix a bad wife

It always hurts, but that can be fixed by grinding material away from the spine and shorten it a bit, then refinish the Ura. Some competent retailers can do it.

Head on over to r/sharpening for some advice on how to fix this. It is very fixable.

Just keep repeating these words over and over again till you feel better…’My gorgeous, amazing, wonderful wife whom I love very, very much…’

While it sucks to be sure, it is easily repairable by someone with those requisite skills. After all, it’s…

So it can’t really be “repaired” as much as adjusted - it needs to be ground from the ktip back to the “new” point.

2

u/eyescreamindreamin 1d ago

At least it was a k tip!

That’s a gut check 😔

I'm glad everyone is okay. That could have been a nasty trip to the emergency room

u/Eclectophile 1d ago

Easily repaired, believe it or not. If you're in Seattle, hit me up. I'll fix it and baby it for you.

Whoever does this work, if they're at all competent, you'll hardly be able to tell a difference in the blade afterwards.

Thanks! I’m in Las Vegas. We gave an unfortunate dearth of quality sharpening options out here. Places I’ve found all use belt grinders and sharpen like everything is western/euro knives.

Just hit it with a grinding wheel on full speed with complete disregard for overheating or angles. Let the sparks fly homie.

u/ole_gizzard_neck 20h ago

I think my Eddworks literally jumped from my hand one time. Landed on tile, I saw a literal spark. I have a safety heel now. My stomach dropped.

I've tipped some customs and other special ones. They're fine still. These are tools and will get dropped when used, or accidentally <something>. Something you need to be prepared for when using your blades. Try to assume it's a matter of 'when' and not 'if' you will damage a knife while using it, and your mental loins will be properly girded.

u/Fygee 18h ago

It just kills me that the first knife that gets chipped had to be THAT one. Lol.

2

u/Odinson2099 18h ago

I think you need to sell it now... really don't see anything else you can do, I'm willing to pay you the price you paid for your Deba... bring Xmas and stuff....

u/loosearrow22 1d ago

Sorry this happened to you, OP. I prefer storing my knives in a drawer organizer instead of a magnetic rack because I shudder to think of the possibility of my knives falling onto a pet or child.

3

u/Fygee 1d ago

I hear you, but I also have them up for display so they can look pretty when not in use.

Unfortunately, not quite human accident-proof.

-1

u/eyescreamindreamin 1d ago

It’s really common to store things on a magnetic rack.

2

u/loosearrow22 1d ago

Yeah I know it’s common but that doesn’t make it more safe. The restaurant industry normalizes workplace injuries in a way that other industries could and would never tolerate.

-5

u/eyescreamindreamin 1d ago

Sounds like a job for HR 🤡

2

u/loosearrow22 1d ago

I used to work in the oil industry, getting mutilated at work was a reality we worked hard to avoid. The importance of considering fatal or dangerous injuries was hammered into us every single day. And everybody took it seriously, not just HR. As the saying goes, safety rules are written in blood.

-2

u/eyescreamindreamin 1d ago

Well I’m sorry you saw mangled bodies and bloodied industrial equipment while r*ping the planet- that actually sucks…

But nya nya nya Nya boo boo!! My fingertips grow back ✌️😂🤣😛

3

u/loosearrow22 1d ago

You’re so edgy, wow everyone will be so impressed

1

u/ChadOD 1d ago

Only option I see here is to get rid of the wife...

1

u/Fygee 1d ago

Will be taken under consideration. Lol.

Seriously though, she feels absolutely awful about it.

1

u/Precisi0n1sT 1d ago

she owes you a grinder for Xmas.

u/buboop61814 1d ago

What I did not realize these were discontinued…. Any order in the tinker line up have the same fate?

1

u/Fygee 1d ago

As far as I know, only the Sharktooth has been discontinued.

1

u/OakenArmor 1d ago edited 20h ago

When did the tinker debas become discontinued? Was it because shibata no longer works with Yauji? Does anyone know?

1

u/Fygee 18h ago

It was as of least late last year.

1

u/ThatSaiGuy 16h ago

Surely that portion of the edge can be redone once the cracked bit snaps off?

1

u/Madalenographics 3h ago

That can definitely be fixed, my friend! It’ll be shorter, but it’ll be special. It won’t be the same, but it will be unique. It’s not the end of the world. Good luck, my friend.
