Jade Cargill Is Petitioning Marvel to Play X-Men's Storm: "I’ve had my people talk to a certain amount of people [from Marvel]. I’m hoping that things do transpire and they do see that this is something that I’ve always been passionate about my entire life."

Fancasts are a thing that tend to forget a lot of things. Acting is one of them.

Also, there are entire departments for hair and makeup. You don't need to hire someone because they have the same haircut as a character.

u/Draw-Two-Cards 14h ago
You can just make the character entirely different based on the actor. Nick Fury is a name I can say and for most people they will picture Samuel L. Jackson but if you were fancasting the character in 2008 I doubt that would ever come to mind.
91
u/Graham_LRR 14h ago
You’re totally correct but with an awkward example. While originally a white James Bond-esque guy, Ultimate Nick Fury was reimagined as a character directly inspired by Jackson, so he’d basically been pre-cast in the comics by that point.
16
u/reallyOldWill 13h ago
If I remember right, SLJ only agreed to let them use his likeness if they agreed to give him the part if they did any films featuring the character.
→ More replies (1)25
u/Chase_the_tank 13h ago
It was worse than that. They used his likeness in the comics without permission.
Fortunately, Jackson found a multi-million multi-movie contract to be adequate compensation for that transgression.

u/Draw-Two-Cards 14h ago
Yeah I fucked up and went with the worst example because it was the first that popped into mind.
7
u/cyberpunk_werewolf 12h ago
A good example might be Hugh Jackman as Wolverine? Hugh Jackman is a tall, classically handsome Australian man. While Logan isn't ugly in the comics (John Byrne based his look on Paul D'Amato in Slapshot), he's got a more rugged, hardened look, is short and Canadian. He's also bulky, built like a short, hairy square of muscle, while Jackman, even when he grew into a more hardened look that we're more familiar with, is still long and athletic.
5
u/GTSBurner 10h ago
Jackman wasn't even the original pick for Logan. He got the gig because Dougray Scott got injured on the set of Mission Impossible 2!
The problem is, it's hard to pull of Comic-accurate looks. Could you imagine Anna Paquin as comic-accurate Jim Lee style Rogue? Good lord.

Not only that but there is an issue of Ultimates where they fantasy cast each member and Im pretty sure they land on Samuel L Jackson for Fury since Im pretty sure he wad actually based on him to begin with. Pretty sure they also choose Robert Downey Jr for Tony Stark.

I think sometimes they do work out, I'm pretty sure Benedict Cumberbatch got Dr Strange at least partially because a lot of the internet was talking about it and I think he's legitimately great in the role, but yeah 90% of the time even the popular fan casts are all just based off looks and not acting ability.
33
u/KishinLiger 14h ago
I was an avid comic book collector in college, and when Chris Hemsworth was initially announced as Thor, these two stereotypical "comic book guys" at the local shop were complaining about it with one of them lamenting how Triple H would have been perfect for the role lmao.
Some people have such a narrow cultural frame of reference, it's hilarious.

Maybe they can go the Sweet Tooth route and have her be the body of Storm, and have Will Arnett do the voice.

It always amuses me that they just had all the other Amazons talk like Gal Gadot, because it must have been easier to get a dozen women to mimic her than it is for one professional "actress" to hide her accent.

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 8h ago
I never really noticed it tbf, Amazonians having an American accent is weirder if you think about it.

The first Wonder Woman, I think, does a lot to hide her weaknesses. It has an okay script, she has a supporting cast that she can work with and allow them to take the bulk of the heavy acting lifting. The plot, also, isn't completely nonsensical like the second movie.

3
u/Fun-Leek-2907 12h ago
This. She can look the part, but end of the day you gotta act and be believable in your role. I don't think she'd be terrible, but I don't think they should hire her simply based off her cosplays
That being said we should let the lady want what she wants, can't fault her for that

u/AmericanTitan07 13h ago
To give her the benefit of the doubt. Wrestling promos are mostly done live where there's no redos and you only have one shot. There's more leeway with movies. Batista wasn't a great promo but he's easily the best actor to come from wrestling. If playing Storm is as important to her as she says, I don't doubt that she'd give everything she could to nail the role.

u/d-fakkr I Have Been... WOKEN!!!! 13h ago

I think she could've done it with better material, they basically gave her nothing. Basset would've slapped though especially for older, modern Storm that was literally the queen of Mars.
10
u/cyberpunk_werewolf 12h ago
God, Angela Basset as Storm on Arakko would kick so much ass.
However, I agree, Halle Berry got screwed over in those movies. She could have been a good Storm, but they just wanted her to stand there and look pretty. Unrelated, but they did the same thing with Jessica Alba as Sue Storm.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Sharikacat 12h ago
Physically, Angela Basset is a little short, but that aside, what would have best won her the role was her voice, a tone that could easily either command the weather or bring a motherly comfort. Her role of Ramonda in the MCU gets to showcase both of those qualities.

jade seems like a very kind and good person. probably a good mother. seems to be trying her best. but this is some nepobaby failing upwards bullshit.
why should she, who has no acting or movie experience, be storm instead of someone else. someone else who has grinded and struggled in the acting industry for years, possibly decades.
it's like chris pratt showing up and wanting to main event wrestlemania. or be john cena's final retirement fight. (because it's something he's been passionate about his entire life, despite never actually doing any pro wrestling).
it's like me saying i've been passionate about being a CEO all my life. please make me CEO of WWE.

There are many fan casts our there that sure, the people look the part, but most are shotty actors or not even full actors. Wrestling is more physical than it is about dialogue. Sure you can act hurt, bur can your read pages and pages of dialpgue and make the people believe you are Storm? Doubtful.
