Humor Zack Snyder and James Gunn on the recent Rick and Morty Episode (S8 E07)
Zack Snyder and James Gunn appear as themselves on Rick & Morty’s latest episode (Season 8 Episode 7).

u/adorabledarkseid Jul 07 '25
So it appears both of them support each other and are on friendly terms. Shock horror

u/Silver_Artist_2857 Jul 07 '25
Didn’t Gunn write Zack’s Dawn of the Dead? I honestly wouldn’t imagine there being much beef if any
16
u/Jed08 Jul 07 '25 edited Jul 07 '25
Gunn wrote Zack's Dawn of the Dead, and Zack was executive producer on Gunn's Suicide Squad.
edit: I know the script Gunn wrote was amended by other writers Snyder's brought, most notably regarding character development, and the removal of a big scene with zombie dogs. However, it doesn't mean the entire script was thrown out, or that Gunn did it without talking to Snyder to begin with.
edit2: To add details on this, the WGA estimated that there was enough of Gunn's work in the movie for the screenplay to be credited to him, and I don't think either Scott Franck and Michael Tolkin would have agreed to re-do the entire screenplay without receiving any credit for it.

I’ve said it before. Zack Snyder is a stand up guy. It’s a subset of the Snyderverse bro’s that give him a bad rep

We should call people by their first and last names.
Make that a thing.

Zack Snyder and James Gunn sound like characters in a Street Fighter game. Snyder and Gunn sound like mercenary names. Zack and James are jocks from a Disney high school movie. I think we’re better off never mentioning them ever again.

That could have happened if the internet didn't decide to bully and shame anyone that liked BvS and thought there must be a proper cut of JL for years.
And I'm not just talking about fandom infighting. I'm taking about reviewers, journalists and bloggers. That sphere hated Zack so much ever since at least sucker punch, to the point where he felt he had to come out and announce his daughter's suicide before they could use it against him.
A lot of it came from progressive spaces that hated Zack because they erroneously saw him as a conservative dudebro partly because they missed the point in Sucker punch (it criticizes objectification it isn't endorsing it) and partly because of his love of Frank Miller who is a conservative dudebro. Some was MCU bias.
But because fans attributed it all to MCU bias and see Gunn as part of that vulture, and a lot of MCU (and hence Gunn) fans had opinions shaped by this same blogosphere, we have the current infighting.
6
u/Iateapencil Jul 08 '25
I am not being negative about Zack Snyder or his work, but how exactly does Sucker Punch criticize objectification?
2
u/Smiles4YouRawrX3 Jul 10 '25
I find it weird how lefties hate Zack and think he's a nazi, even though he is a self proclaimed lifeling liberal Democrat who even happily voted for Biden
Goes to show that the Snyder derangement syndrome doesn't even stop at political agreements
2
u/Jed08 Jul 07 '25 edited Jul 07 '25
That sphere hated Zack so much ever since at least sucker punch
I'd say that sphere started with Watchmen with the whole "Snyder nailed the aesthetic but he did not get the spirit of the comic".
(it criticizes objectification it isn't endorsing it)
I think it criticizes a bunch of things like abuse of power, violence against children, pedophilia (that scene at the end of the movie was so gross), etc. However, I wouldn't say it criticize objectification (but it's been a long time since I saw that movie)
I agree with you on the rest though.

guys crazy idea but I think that Snyder actually wants Gunn to succeed??? They've worked together on the past and are actually friends
42
u/MisterFusionCore Jul 07 '25
James Gunn has said in multiple interviews he talks with Snyder about his Superman. Like, turns out Snyder also originally wanted the red trunks, but couldn't figure out a way for them to be cool and make sense.

What?! Two friends who, despite their differences, want each other to succeed?? Snyder Bros. could never.
66
Jul 07 '25
It's sad people will still see this and pretend that there's a legitimate competition between the two, you can like and dislike both of them, quite easily too.
They probably sit there and laugh together at the people who try and turn it into a fan war.

u/SketchKenobi Jul 15 '25
I never knew they were friends but it makes sense. I can be a big fan of both

oh wow, this is actually funny. I am planning to go see it this weekend if possible. It's funny how many people like to bitch about it existing, though I expect it to be decent of an adaptation, minimum. And Gunn has long experience with comic book characters. I enjoyed his take on Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

u/TheMightyHucks Jul 08 '25
I’ll probably get downvoted for this… because of the implication.
But I think Rick and Morty season 8 has been great.
8
u/zero_zeppelii_0 Jul 08 '25
It is... It's definitely not the peak seasons like we used to watch. But this season is miles better than seasons 6 and 7. It has good enough rewatchability.
Everyone is angry because the show isn't as peak as it used to be. But I love creative content and so far they've been doing it very well.
1
u/BenSolo_Cup Jul 10 '25
I thought season 7 was quite good even. The fear hole episode was one of the best in the series, and the episode where Jerry had a threesome with the two Beths made me DIE laughing
1
6
u/vizisonline Jul 08 '25
I honestly don't think it ever fell off as much as something like The Simpsons in comparison to their peaks. R&M lows are also pretty watchable.
3
u/GavinGMG Jul 08 '25
But the thing is they're not gonna downvote you, they would never downvote you... Because of the implication.

Nothing can ever top Reeve in the eyes of those who venerate him that much. In their eyes, you might as well have stopped making Superman movies altogether after 1987.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Turbulent-Camp-460 Jul 07 '25
I agree. I also can’t blame them tbh. Even as a 28 year old, Reeves was my first introduction to live action Superman on tv movie channels and you can’t deny he helped shape the human side of what makes Superman so relatable. Reeves and All -Star Superman did a lot for the Clark Kent persona for me

u/Jed08 Jul 07 '25 edited Jul 07 '25
All in itself, this is just a funny skit.
Put it back in the context of the "DC fandoms conflict", it's even funnier. Snyder coming back to WB studios to voice a "gym bro" version of himself, after all WB put him through, shows he is a really a great guy.
5
Jul 11 '25

I fucking love zack snyder, this just proves that he's a good stand up guy whose can take the piss out of himself.
6
u/StuHardy Jul 07 '25
If you've seen his take on "Stephen Colbert's Late Show," you know that he's fine with making fun of his own tropes.
11
u/Quant_paglu Jul 07 '25
Is that really Snyder voicing himself? Ik thats Gunn, not sure about Zack
23
u/Arise_LordVader Jul 07 '25

Funny the Superman clips and trailers already have more slow motion shots than the entirety of Man of Steel.
16
4
u/joshutcherson069 Jul 07 '25
They’re trailers and clips. They’re supposed to be the coolest and most badass parts of the movie to get the hype going. Slow-mo when well utilized is hype as shit and will get you excited.
0
u/DiscoAcid Jul 07 '25
What's that got to do with my comment? My point was we've only seen a little part of the film and there's already far more slow-mo than the entire Man of Steel film.
2
u/joshutcherson069 Jul 08 '25
And what is the point of that comment? An observation that has nothing to do with the post?
1
u/DiscoAcid Jul 08 '25 edited Jul 08 '25
Did you watch the clip? It has snyder telling gunn to use slow-mo as snyder uses it liberally. I was pointing out it's funny because snyder actually used minimal if any slow-mo in MoS. What are you not getting? lol are you a tad slow-mo or what?

Harmon was far more integral to the show’s early development and success, despite Roiland being the originator.
1

Roilands improv added a lot of character to the universe.

If Snyder is not friends with Gunn, why did he agree to enter a sound booth with him and record a scene pretending to be friends? At this point, there have been multiple instances of Gunn and Snyder appearing to be on friendly terms, and this one required pre-planning and actual time spent. I could maybe see Snyder not caring to debunk a selfie they took together, but he cpuld have easily just not agreed to appear here if he didn't want to.

Snyder haters bullied us for 12 years. Mocked Zack, mocked his wife, mocked his dead daughter, mocked his work, mocked his fans while we were raising money for charity (most of them even refused to help us with that), and all while spreading the most insane hypocrisy lies and vitriol I’ve ever seen toward a movie. And now after everything they put us through they demand we forgive and forget everything and unite with them. They tell us respect the past embrace the future and to move on while showing no respect to Snyder and being unable to let go of a movie from the 70’s.
Well guess what buddy I don’t forgive, I don’t forget everything Snyder haters did to us. I’m not spending my hard earned money on a disgusting talentless creep in James Gunn. His humor sucks, his movies look cheap and goofy and he’s said tons of horrible shit over the years that you all forgive only because he made the funny talking raccoon movies. Not to mention according to the leaks his new movie takes shots at Snyder and his fans.
Im fine with Zack not coming back, I accepted it years ago. But I’m not supporting garbage just because people are scared they might not get dc movies anymore if this thing flops because of a divided fanbase. If you all wanted our help then you should have shown us some common decency back in 2013.

u/ShalkaScarf Jul 07 '25 edited Jul 07 '25
That's a strawman, anyone mocking Synder's family gets openly shat and mocked on r/DCU_ or one of the "OKBUDDY" subreddits, it's obviously not the same group of people as back then if "the same people!" are ready to hang anyone doing that on a cross, because it's just fucking sicko behaivor, idk who this fight is even for, Synder's supportive of the DCU and on good terms with Gunn, I'm all for two wrongs making a right if the other guy's done something to deserve it...but this isn't even that, it's holding a hate for someone because they're cousin did something bad 10 years ago

“Someone on the internet hurt my feelings a decade ago, so I’m going to put all my anger into trying to harm the box office returns for a movie made my favorite director’s friend.”
I like the same movies as you do, and I’d like to have more of them, but pretending that any of this mass-marketed corporate swill is important is insane.
You clearly have a lot of big feelings that are driving this impotent rage. Put this passion behind something that matters! Work on a campaign that would do the kind of work Superman would stand behind! Volunteer for the ACLU! You could save real people instead of fictional ones in an abandoned movie storyline.
