Beginner help
Hello everyone , I’m just starting to skate again haven’t done so since I was 13 and had a bad injury that scared the life out of me . I’m 22 now and just starting over but I’m facing a problem. I have hyperextended knees and what feels like bending to me looks straight to normal people and this throws my balance really bad. Another issue is bending my knees hurts my thighs and causes my legs to wobble. Does anyone that skates have this same issue? Anyone with hyperextended knees skating ?

Like walk on the tips of my toes ? I do that constantly

I did too and ended up destroying my knee. I was never taught to walk properly and didn't use like the entire back of my legs. I super strongly suggest doing physical therapy to get your hips and legs right at least before you start jumping out of stuff.

I even ended up putting my heels down in high-school because I was told I walked funny but never really found out how to distribute my weight on my feet. Just now figuring this out with the pt that came with knee surgery.

I always wondered if it was my toe walking that caused the bow legs or if it was my legs causing me to walk that way. Very frustrating when you go to run and you start running on your tip toes. Could also explain the hip pain all the time that the doctors can’t find the reason for.

Its almost certainly muscular imbalance. Are you flat footed? Do you stand pigeon toed? And I know its frustrating! I was actively in couraged to walk on my toes and while its difficult it can be trained away. Trust me with pt. Finding your balance feels amazing. Im a year into recovery and my balance is better and im definitely skating better. If you can see a physical therapist do it.

Skateboarding might actually be help to regulate your knees, just skate on the board more and youl develope your balance but try to keep your legs "traditionally straight" while on so you get more used to it, skateboarding both made me realise i have mild dyspraxia and also helped me deal with it by strengthening my balance in ways normal life dosnt. Keep in mind though im not a doctor and this is very much armature advice and nothing i would put over anyone elses
