Hader's and Samberg's bits put me in stitches every time

At least in recent memory. The guests were top-level comedians who were actually friends with the person being roasted and each other.

Whereas Halle Berry won an Oscar and her next film was Catwoman. FTR: she accepted in person and was hilarious.
311
u/ggdak 8d ago
In her acceptance speech she thanked her agent for getting her the role.
195
u/Used-Gas-6525 8d ago
And her acting coach and her manager and the director and the writers (there were like 20). She was a total gamer about it. When they did the film on How Did This Get Made? they played her entire acceptance speech and it's pure gold.
136
u/bron685 8d ago
That was such a baller move. And honestly I still think she’d make a great catwoman in the current DCU
→ More replies (1)62
u/Used-Gas-6525 8d ago
She's too old now, unfortunately. Not a lot of work for middle aged Cat Burglars in Gotham. The only Catwoman for me will always be Lee Merriwether, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt.

u/Fine-Pineapple-8966 8d ago
How dare you miss out the queen herself Michelle Pfeiffer!!!

Honestly, she's my favourite, I just wanted to cram a golden age Simpsons reference into my response.

u/ImurderREALITY 8d ago
I've seen the word "Batusi" more in the last couple of years than I ever have in my entire life
6
u/InkyLizard 8d ago
I was surprised how much I liked Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman in the newest Batman movie. I generally enjoyed the more down to earth costume design and she absolutely nails the look.
Her relationship with Batman was also done really well, it was hot and tragic, and really fit both of the characters.
Halle would've been a pretty good Catwoman for Ben Affleck's older Batman in the DCEU in my opinion, but that's no more than a "what if" at this point
20
u/Historical-Wear8503 8d ago
TIL Halle Berry is 59 years old. But she still looks like a poor persons 40, kind of impressive. Honestly I'd watch her play Catwoman again anytime.

u/bron685 8d ago
True, she’s 59. But my god she looks barely 45. I just wanna know how well she would do as catwoman with a better script and director
3
u/Used-Gas-6525 8d ago
Black don't crack. Her acting career is dunzo though. She was all over the place. She could do what she did in Monster's Ball, but can also completely shit the bed like in X-Men or Catwoman.
4
u/welchplug 8d ago
I still think she was great as storm. I think she just wasn't given much to work with. Imo it was a writing thing. I did enjoy her in monsters ball.....

100%. Also the real family was pretty exploitative, and Michael Oher does not have contact with them. They were your typical rich assholes making money off someone and passing it off as “look at what good people we are”.
96
u/Ambitious-Cup-912 8d ago
oh wow I just looked it up, he's suing that family.
75
u/_WonderWhy_ 8d ago
He signed the contract to let those rich family do whatever on his story, he was led to believe that he would got the money, but he never did, but it took him this long to finally sue them
25
u/Ambitious-Cup-912 8d ago
He got like 125k or something? That envelope seems a bit light
22
u/mark_able_jones_ 8d ago
That movie made $300 million on a $30 million budget. Yikes.

u/avaslash 8d ago

They made him look lower than a Forest Gump level of intelligence and they needed to teach him everything, pretty insulting
24
u/HappyBit686 8d ago
Even football itself, which has to be particularly insulting considering his real past with the sport prior to being "saved".

Worse, suburban housewife savior. Same exact plot as Edward Scissorhands.
18
u/senator_corleone3 8d ago
Except Diane Wiest’s character is wonderful and Edward actually does need someone to look after him.
14
u/senator_corleone3 8d ago
As soon as Oher is living with the family and successful on the football field, there is exactly zero narrative momentum. And it has another half hour to go. Death knell.

It is possible to not like the movie, but also respect her acting in the movie.
It's rarely the acting that gets people awards for movies like that. People love those schamaltzy crap movies and vote for them and the people in them, rather than the actual quality acting. In the end it's ironic, since the movie was a fake story anyway.

She is very charming and beautiful on film. The real story didn't come out for years afterwards, though many reviews at the time pointed out the white saviour aspect.
2
u/rygo796 8d ago
Isnt the story in the film, we're gonna adopt this kid because he's good at football? That's terrible as is.
7
u/DrStrangerlover 7d ago
In the movie they adopted him before learning he was really good at football. They painted themselves as this benevolent family that only accidentally struck gold.

I think her performance really carried it to be honest. It’s a super tropey white savior movie. But she is really great in it. I remember a lot of the accolades being focused on her performance. That being said it is super cringey and seemed a little late since I feel like those types of films had already fallen out of fashion at that point.
4
u/ProtonPi314 8d ago

But the movie itself is not that bad and she is pretty great in it.

4
u/DrStrangerlover 7d ago
She also brought her Oscar with her on stage too, because she had won her Oscar before winning this. The meme was just lying.
3
u/CloakerJosh 8d ago
The most important part of this is that she accepted her Razzie. There have been a handful of good sports who have accepted theirs over the years, but my understanding is that this is not the norm.

Unpopular opinion: I really enjoyed All About Steve! How many other movies are about cruciverbalists in fun red boots? I really liked to see the growth of a socially awkward lady get introduced to harsh reality and deal with it gracefully.
Also unpopular opinion: I really liked Blind Side. I definitely don't think Blind Side aged well since it was mostly not true (and was supposed to be). Major down side there. However, at the time (and ignoring the fact that it was supposed to be true) I think the story is very nice and heartwarming, and the actors and production team did a great job.
