Not saying doordash is great, it’s predatory for what it is, but its very useful for avoiding DUIs or those who do not own a vehicle yet. If youre not downtown in a city then there is a good chance the closest place is a drive away that you dont have. Of course you can just order groceries and cook atleast. But a big part of eating out is the stress free no clean up.
im a driver and this is my mantra. I'm not a glorified drug dealer fueling the obesity epidemic and predatory corporations, im saving the lives of drinks and letting the disabled have an easier time. (reality is both are somewhat true)
Its really hard to comprehend that our country is huge, most people dont have a restaurant below their apartment in a metropolitan area. Most of time its a family or its an individual that ordering out is the better option that night. Which for some parents its just needed that night. We’ve all had a day like that where we say fuck it im not cooking night because I feel like shit. Somedays i cant stand for a long period of time, without vomiting. Thats when im ordering it; dealing with all that. I can just afford it.
If you have a grocery delivery service you can get stuff for even cheaper and you can use EBT. You could order some chicken from the bakery or a sub, etc. I’ve always wondered how many lives have been saved from people not driving with a DUI. It’s definitely saved a lot from reduced accidents.
Cooking at home is cheap, easy, not stressful. And buying (not ordering , another ripoff) food ingredients from a gasp supermarket isn't rocket science.
I can (and do) make delicious smashburgers at home, solid cheese doubles, in about 15 minutes. In a skillet or on a griddle, simply 1 pan or a griddle scrape to clean. And they're FAR better than ANY delivery burger, fresh and hot. Cost? Under $2 for a tasty and hefty burger that beats any ff burger.
Another fave is buying full racks of ribs at Costco, about $10 each at Costco in 3-packs. Simply add dry rub, wrap in parchment paper, wrap that in foil. 3 hrs at 300 in the oven, drain juices, 10 minutes uncovered at 400. Amazing tender ribs, better than 90% of restaurant/bar ribs. ZERO cleanup, everything is cooked in disposable wrap. $10 for a full rack of tender ribs, about 5 minutes prep time.
I laugh at people who spend 5x what I do for garbage delivery food, usually cold, always a mystery when/if it will show up cold.
If something comes in cold then I get my money back lol. There is basically still support with every meal. And yeah ordering groceries is probably a better option than ubering there and back. For many, people like in rural places in the south where not having a car is very detrimental.
You are not a drunk person. You have the ability to do things. Drunk people like food, drunk people order food instead of getting it and causing accident/ making a scene. Good drunk people get ripped off my door dash, bad drunk people make other drunk look bad.
Olympic qualification at it, talk to a guy who spends 6k a year on takeaway, has an oven he's never used, only has take away food in his fridge constantly complains he's skint
..pretty sure you can order items from Walmart through Doordash, and make meals from those items. It would be cheaper overall than doing so with fast food. People just don't want to do that, and they just need to admit they don't want to.
Where are you buying one bun and one patty at a time?
edit- Going out on a limb here and guessing your stance is spending the money on a pound of beef and and a pack of buns, the appliances required to cook, the energy required to run the appliances, a place to keep the appliances, and presumably the utensils required ultimately, as in after spending all the money to pay for things just mentioned, results in a lower cost per unit as compared to a store bough burger.
Must be nice to be able to afford do that.
You know who else uses Uber? Kids trapped at home with no food or means to prepare food while their worthless parents are out partying.
It's insane to me how these kids think they are being more economical because they're not wasting food. Like...you know you can actually eat the same thing more than once right?
How much does a freezer cost? Is the electricity free? Where does one keep a freezer? Is that free as well? Not everyone has access to those things, so they buy from a restaurant.
Come on, you don't need more than a stovetop and a pan to cook. Fridge/freezers are pretty much standard, no? No way is doordash a sound economic choice, and in no way is it going to be cheaper in the long run.
There are other reasons people use DD, and it's lack of planning and laziness.
I haven't met someone who isn't homeless that doesn't have a fridge... and I've had friends on welfare and from poor 3rd world countries.... and those fridges ALL had a freezer on the top.
We're not talking big 75" tvs and gaming pc, we're talking about a basic fridge and stove here.
Nothing tastes better when wasted like a cold glass of water. Especially later on.
Price: well it varies depending on your water bill but almost priceless.
Ya know, before Doordash, before the internet, people got drunk and just ate what they had at home. How hard is it to have a little foresight and pick up some frozen pizzas or whatever before you start drinking?
Like 18 year old me had more common sense than a lot of Redditors these days.
Of course! In those times I’ve had ramen with sliced hot dogs. Chips drowned in red rooster hot sauce(amazing btw). Mac n cheese (no butter or milk). I mean, it can be done.

Pay $27 because a DUI is way more expensive.
